❗️Every NYE people across the world come together to demonstrate outside prisons & remind those inside they’re not alone. Even if the pandemic prevents us doing this in person, we want to continue this tradition of solidarity. Write to a prisoner

This year, we sent more books than we have ever sent, to a much bigger number of readers. But we aren't so bold as to make resolutions for 2021. We will continue to send books to incarcerated LGBTQ+ people. Anything else is a bonus.

Last year we posted on NYE a summary of our plans for 2020, which mostly involve increasing our capacity through training up volunteers and some side projects. Coronavirus made all of that impossible. We had less volunteers, and a huge increase in requests for books.

    - don't assume someone has a particular experience/ wants to talk to you about trauma - if its something you're expecting a response to, tell people how much u wanna write & stick to it - don't ask why theyre in prison - keep things confidential - if in doubt draw something nice

Some quick thoughts on writing to incarcerated people for the first time: - introduce yourself and share something about your life - don't be a dick - don't say anything that could get people in trouble (anything too critical of prison, illegal, sex, etc)

Please contribute to and share this fundraiser for housing for CeCe McDonald! If you don't know her story of being imprisoned for defending herself against a racist and transphobic attack in 2011, check out the videos in this thread.

If you're on the left and sort of an abolitionist I strongly recommend doing some reading & thinking about it and getting the difficult arguments straight in your head because we're facing a big expansion of police powers, immigration detention, and the prison estate this year.

On Tuesday an 18 year old woman died at HMP Styal - the eighth death in a women's prison this year. There is no justification for keeping people in these conditions.

Will definitely be supporting this and you should too! Think people often underestimate the power and solidarity writing to folks in prison has - especially this year when many folks have had increasingly limited or non-existent contact with the outside.

In previous yrs our Xmas post got 100s of RTs, probably b/c i tweeted them in the morning & ppl had the full day to tweet. Unfortunately this yr I got distracted by Xmas itself (read: drinking/cooking), & it hasn't performed so well. Pls give it a boost so I feel less guilty!
