8 simple tips to help overcome loneliness
- Get some exercise- Exercise can be relaxing and fun. Outdoor activities such as bike riding, going for a walk are also a great way to see your surroundings; this can also be a group activity with friends or a club. Going to the gym or attending yoga or fitness class can also be a great way to meet other people or to take a friend along with you.
- Write in a Journal- Writing is a powerful tool. It can help you identify many different types of feelings, including loneliness. If you’re feeling lonely, start writing. Get your emotions out on paper and start asking yourself how you can create a feeling of connection in your life.
- Cook a meal- Cooking a good meal can be a meditative experience. It’s a great opportunity to mull over thoughts and lose yourself in a recipe. Cooking a real meal is also a perfect excuse to find a dinner date or to catch up with a friend or get to know an acquaintance.
- Do something artistic- Art is a great way to help express and your feelings and gives you the opportunity to distance yourself from your thoughts of loneliness. This can be anything from doodling on a notepad to painting on a canvas to taking photographs to crafts such as card making or knitting.
- Connect with your community- There are so many ways to connect and involve yourself in your local community. Some things you can do to connect with your community and maybe meet a few new people are to do some volunteer work or attend local council meetings. Try searching online for some things you could involve yourself in.
- Read a book- Reading is a great way to escape into another world or glean creative ideas for your latest project. Try reading a book you have at home or borrow one from your local library. It can also be a great way to meet other people through book clubs.
- Be still and do nothing- Supposedly being “busy” is a sign of success in modern society. I’m not sure that’s true. Why are we all in such a hurry? And if everyone is so busy, how do we create meaningful connections with others? Slow down, take your time and start to take your time. Rushing from place to place can be counterproductive. Being busy can sometimes erode our sense of purpose causing us to feel undervalued and lonely. Try setting 10 minutes aside a day just to do nothing or to meditate.
- Invite someone out for Coffee or Tea- This gives you the opportunity to catch up with friends or get to know someone a little better. This is a great simple way to connect with others and get you out of the house.
