The Old Man and the Coup

This article looks at the recent events around the removal of Robert Mugabe from power in Zimbabwe. It argues that this will not bring liberation for the people of Zimbabwe, as it does not address the problems Zimbabwe faces – a ruthless ruling class, its state, capitalism and imperialism.

Robert Mugabe, the longstanding authoritarian ruler that has waged a war against Zimbabwe’s poor, is gone. He was forced to resign in the wake of a coup – although the main actors in the coup comically denied it was one.

When it was announced that Mugabe was exiting power, tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Harare to celebrate. Many are hoping that his exit will bring change for the better for Zimbabwe. This hope, unfortunately, may be wishful thinking. The reason for this is that Mugabe was a symptom of far deeper problems, and without addressing those problems, Zimbabwe cannot be free; nor can there be genuine equality. Similarly, those that removed Mugabe are cut from the same cloth, and come from the same ruthless ruling class.

Against normalization and repression: Struggle and organize !

We learnt that on October 25th, a large police operation called « Erebus » (Érebo in Portuguese, i.e. the name of the Greek god of darkness) was launched against the anti-authoritarian movement.

The civil police invaded at least 4 libertarian premises and claims to have warrants against a dozen of premises and about 30 people. They raided the occupation Pandorga and the Parrhesia premises as well as the political and cultural space Ateneu Libertário Batalha da Várzea that used to be FAG’s official premises. The Federação Anarquista Gaúcha (FAG) is specifically targeted by this operation as it is considered by the stupid-as-usual police to be the top organization of the anarchist movement in Porto Alegre. They are accused of forming a gang in order to commit crimes against public and private possessions.

¡SANTIAGO MALDONADO PRESENTE!

En estos últimos días se cumplieron 3 años de la aparición del cuerpo de Luciano Arruga, 7 años del asesinato de Mariano Ferreira y hoy 20 de octubre se confirma lo que todos/as intuíamos el cuerpo encontrado, río arriba, es de Santiago Maldonado.
Un joven de barrio desaparece por no querer robar para la policía, uno muere a manos de una patota por luchar contra la precarización laboral, y otro es desaparecido por luchar por la autonomía del pueblo mapuche. En todos ellos hay elementos en común, la represión del estado apunta a aquellos que resultan peligrosos por ser parte de una juventud que no se somete, que no agacha la cabeza y que no asume los mandatos del sistema. Contra la represión en los barrios, contra la precarización laboral y por la autodeterminación de los pueblos, por todas esas reivindicaciones tan urgentes seguiremos luchando.

El estado mostró su cara más terrible y voraz, el mecanismo de la desaparición forzada es una metodología que las clases dominantes sostienen, con sus particularidades, en las distintas coyunturas. Y aparecen también las operaciones mediáticas, desesperadas por instalar en la sociedad un discurso que desmovilice, y busque en los de abajo la responsabilidad de lo que viene sucediendo.
Aun así, no han podido frenar las gigantescas movilizaciones populares de variados sectores en todo este tiempo, y temen por la magnitud del hastío y la indignación de nuestro pueblo, que ante semejante ofensa a su dignidad, se manifestará más temprano que tarde en las calles de todo el país.

Catalunya como oportunidad (para el resto del estado)

El repunte autoritario es para toda España, que no quede duda de que un gobierno liberticida y corrupto como el de Rajoy no está solo en esto y que cuenta con el firme apoyo del PSOE y de los grandes medios de comunicación y de las instituciones clave del estado: Tribunal Constitucional, Supremo, Audiencia Nacional, Fiscalía, cuerpos policiales y ejército. Y por supuesto la Monarquía. Ante esto sólo se alza Catalunya, quizás Euskadi, y unas cuantas decenas de miles de personas valientes que han salido a la calle en todas las ciudades para solidarizarse con su proceso de autodeterminación y protestar por la represión. Es necesario pasar de actitudes defensivas (la protesta contra la represión) a una actitud de ofensiva. No se entiende qué están haciendo las organizaciones de las Marchas de la Dignidad o de los llamados frentes sociales que no están convocando a tomar la calle. Pero no para protestar por la represión si no para exigir la República y el fin del antiguo régimen (el de 1978, con su inequívoco origen en 1939).
