Radio

Radio is the use of radio waves is to carry information, such as sound, by systematically modulating some property of electromagnetic energy waves transmitted through space, such as their amplitude, frequency, phase, or pulse width. When radio waves strike an electrical conductor, the oscillating fields induce an alternating current in the conductor. The information in the waves can be extracted and transformed back into its original form.

Radio systems need a transmitter to modulate (change) some property of the energy produced to impress a signal on it, for example using amplitude modulation or angle modulation (which can be frequency modulation or phase modulation). Radio systems also need an antenna to convert electric currents into radio waves, and vice versa. An antenna can be used for both transmitting and receiving. The electrical resonance of tuned circuits in radios allow individual stations to be selected. The electromagnetic wave is intercepted by a tuned receiving antenna. A radio receiver receives its input from an antenna and converts it into a form usable for the consumer, such as sound, pictures, digital data, measurement values, navigational positions, etc. Radio frequencies occupy the range from a 3 kHz to 300 GHz, although commercially important uses of radio use only a small part of this spectrum.

Radio Song

"Radio Song" is the fourth single released by R.E.M. from their 1991 album Out of Time, where it appeared as the opening track.

Lead singer Michael Stipe once said that he hoped everyone had enough sense of humor to realize that he was "kind of taking the piss of everyone," himself included.

Stipe also asked KRS-One, leader of Boogie Down Productions (of which Stipe was a fan), to contribute to the track. He provides some backing vocals for the track, as well as a closing rap, and appears prominently in the video.

Virgin Radio

Virgin Radio is a brand owned by the Virgin Group. Virgin Radio International was established in 2001 to develop the brand and has since built one of the world's most popular music radio franchises, broadcasting in multiple languages and music based formats in North America, Europe and Asia – including the Middle East – and has 18 million listeners worldwide. Virgin Radio stations in each country are owned independently of the Virgin Group and of each other and generally carry independent programming tailored to local tastes.

Virgin Radio UK

The first Virgin Radio branded station initially broadcast in the UK between 1993 and 2008 under several owners, but was renamed Absolute Radio after a further ownership change in 2008.

In January 2015, it was announced that Virgin Radio International and UTV Media had partnered to relaunch Virgin Radio subject to Ofcom awarding the necessary broadcast licence. In March 2015, Ofcom awarded a UK digital terrestrial commercial radio licence for Virgin Radio UK and the station is expected to launch in March 2016.

Brooke Gladstone

Brooke Gladstone is an American journalist and media analyst. She is host and managing editor of the National Public Radio newsmagazine, On the Media, and has been a contributor to The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Observer, and Slate. Gladstone lectures at universities and conferences and has appeared on PBS's Bill Moyers Journal and CNN's Reliable Sources (and once filled in for Charlie Rose on PBS's Charlie Rose Show.) She is widely quoted as an expert on press trends.

Career

Gladstone has covered media for much of her career. In Washington, D.C. in the early 1980s she covered public broadcasting for the industry newspaper Current and reported for Cablevision and The Washington Weekly.

In 1987, at the age of 32, she joined National Public Radio, first as editor of Weekend Edition with Scott Simon, and then as senior editor of All Things Considered. In 1991, she received a Knight Fellowship to study Russian language and history. A year later, she was reporting from Moscow for NPR, covering such stories as the bloody 1993 power struggle. In 1995, Gladstone returned to the United States and was hired as NPR's first "media reporter," based in New York City.
