From its contributions to the civil rights movement, to welcoming immigrants with open arms Harlem has also been brought to its knees by poverty crime and racial discrimination, but it has also been lifted up by activism music and art.

The Streets of Harlem...How Black Men in The Streets Adapt to Structural Violence, is a video street ethnography that documents how Harlem-based street identified Black men, across generations, frame notions of resilience in relation to structural inequality. Dr. Yasser Arafat Payne, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Delaware has organized this project with music producer/video director Scott 'Kasper' Gaddy.
Johan Galtung (1969) created structural violence theory and he specifically argued that structural systems and institutions through policy and laws, worked to prevent individuals, groups and local communities from “meeting their basic needs”. In other words, according to Galtung (1969), many other scholars and many community leaders—segments of our society were intentionally sustained in economic poverty for the so-called, “greater good of larger society”. This structural philosophy is still guiding the United States.
Structural violence creates and fashions a street identity in low-income Black men, across generations, in Harlem NYC. This film understands structural violence in The Streets of Harlem through the following topics: violence, fatherhood, education, employment, housing, prison re-entry and experiences with police.
Additionally, this video street ethnography documents how Black men frame involvement in the streets as a site of resilience in response to egregious experiences with economic poverty. A “street” identity, “street life” or “the streets” is an ideology or way of life centered on personal, social and economic survival. Crime is coping. Ultimately, this project provides a social psychological examination of how street life, as an ideology and set of relations and networks, operates in the lives of low-income Black males as a space within which optimism and struggles for survival are displayed.
Filming took place between 2007-2011. Three specific generations of street identified Black men were interviewed: (a) 16-24; (b) 25-44; and (c) 45-above, in the context of individual, dual and group interviews. Those interested in and concerned with understanding more deeply the point of view of street identified Black men should also consider using this film as an instructional tool on how to conduct video-street ethnographies in local communities. We recommend this film be used for undergraduate and graduate courses. Also, the film should be used to generate provocative but informative discussions within local Black communities. And this project can be used by researchers, service providers, non-profit organizations and policy makers to more deeply and critically re-conceptualize notions of resilience and the developing of community-based interventions.

Harlem is a large neighborhood in the northern section of the New York City borough of Manhattan. Since the 1920s, Harlem has been known as a major African-American residential, cultural and business center. Originally a Dutch village, formally organized in 1658, it is named after the city of Haarlem in the Netherlands. Harlem's history has been defined by a series of economic boom-and-bust cycles, with significant population shifts accompanying each cycle.
African-American residents began to arrive en masse in 1905, with numbers fed by the Great Migration. In the 1920s and 1930s, Central and West Harlem were the focus of the "Harlem Renaissance", an outpouring of artistic work without precedent in the American black community. However, with job losses in the time of the Great Depression and the deindustrialization of New York City after World War II, rates of crime and poverty increased significantly. Harlem's black population peaked in the 1950s. In 2008, the United States Census found that for the first time since the 1930s, less than half of residents were black, and black residents only counted for 40% of the population.

The Streets were an English hip hop and UK garage project from Birmingham, England, led by the vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Mike Skinner.
The project released five studio albums: Original Pirate Material (2002), A Grand Don't Come for Free (2004), The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living (2006), Everything Is Borrowed (2008), Computers and Blues (2011), an internet-only album Cyberspace and Reds (2011) and a string of successful singles in the mid-2000s, including "Has It Come to This?", "Fit But You Know It", "Dry Your Eyes", "When You Wasn't Famous" and "Prangin' Out".

2001–2003: Original Pirate Material
In 2001, the Locked On label, which had success with The Artful Dodger featuring Craig David, released "Has It Come to This?" under the name The Streets. It was a breakthrough hit for The Streets, reaching number 18 on the UK charts in October 2001.

Ultimately, this project provides a social psychological examination of how street life, as an ideology and set of relations and networks, operates in the lives of low-income Black males as a space within which optimism and struggles for survival are displayed. Filming took place between 2007-2011. Three specific generations of street identified Black men were interviewed: (a) 16-24; (b) 25-44; and (c) 45-above, in the context of individual, dual and group interviews. Those interested in and concerned with understanding more deeply the point of view of street identified Black men should also consider using this film as an instructional tool on how to conduct video-street ethnographies in local communities. We recommend this film be used for undergraduate and graduate courses. Also, the film should be used to generate provocative but informative discussions within local Black communities. And this project can be used by researchers, service providers, non-profit organizations and policy makers to more deeply and critically re-conceptualize notions of resilience and the developing of community-based interventions. -

The Streets of Harlem...How Black Men in The Streets Adapt to Structural Violence, is a video street ethnography that documents how Harlem-based street identified Black men, across generations, frame notions of resilience in relation to structural inequality. Dr. Yasser Arafat Payne, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Delaware has organized this project with music producer/video director Scott 'Kasper' Gaddy. The Streets of Harlem...How Black Men in The Streets Adapt to Structural Violence, is a video street ethnography that documents how Harlem-based street identified Black men, across generations, frame notions of resilience in relation to structural inequality. Dr. Yasser Arafat Payne, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Delaware has organized this project with music producer/video director Scott 'Kasper' Gaddy.
Johan Galtung (1969) created structural violence theory and he specifically argued that structural systems and institutions through policy and laws, worked to prevent individuals, groups and local communities from “meeting their basic needs”. In other words, according to Galtung (1969), many other scholars and many community leaders—segments of our society were intentionally sustained in economic poverty for the so-called, “greater good of larger society”. This structural philosophy is still guiding the United States.
Structural violence creates and fashions a street identity in low-income Black men, across generations, in Harlem NYC. This film understands structural violence in The Streets of Harlem through the following topics: violence, fatherhood, education, employment, housing, prison re-entry and experiences with police.
Additionally, this video street ethnography documents how Black men frame involvement in the streets as a site of resilience in response to egregious experiences with economic poverty. A “street” identity, “street life” or “the streets” is an ideology or way of life centered on personal, social and economic survival. Crime is coping. Ultimately, this project provides a social psychological examination of how street life, as an ideology and set of relations and networks, operates in the lives of low-income Black males as a space within which optimism and struggles for survival are displayed.
Filming took place between 2007-2011. Three specific generations of street identified Black men were interviewed: (a) 16-24; (b) 25-44; and (c) 45-above, in the context of individual, dual and group interviews. Those interested in and concerned with understanding more deeply the point of view of street identified Black men should also consider using this film as an instructional tool on how to conduct video-street ethnographies in local communities. We recommend this film be used for undergraduate and graduate courses. Also, the film should be used to generate provocative but informative discussions within local Black communities. And this project can be used by researchers, service providers, non-profit organizations and policy makers to more deeply and critically re-conceptualize notions of resilience and the developing of community-based interventions.

The Green Book: A Travel Guide That Saved Black Lives
For African Americans, a travel guide from the Jim Crow era often meant the difference between a hot meal and a vicious beating - or murder. In The Green Book, a travel guide for African Americans, you had 48 pages of practical scripture, offering safe passage through the United States—where you can sleep, eat and fill your gas tank. The 1940 edition of the Green Book offered several options for safe harbor in central Alabama from the Ku Klux Klan, not to mention less deadly manifestations of hatred. Created by Victor H. Green, the book recognized that such a map was necessary. But he also hoped that his work would eventually be obviated by social progress.

The "Green Book" was a travel guide published from 1936-1964 by a black postal worker in Harlem, NY named Victor H. Green. He featured restaurants, hotels, barbershops, beauty parlors, taverns, garages and gas stations that were willing to serve black people during the Jim Crow era. There are many stories about the difficulties of blacks traveling in the Southern and Northeastern United States but it was even more challenging for blacks to travel in the Western United States. Only six percent of the 100+ motels that lined Route 66 in Albuquerque, New Mexico admitted blacks, so a travel guide was an absolute necessity. Harlem History:
Harlem was originally a Dutch village founded around 1658. It was named after the city of Haarlem in the Netherlands. In the early 20th century many African Americans moved to this area and in the 1920s and 30s many famous artists, musicians and businessmen became well known in Harlem and took Black culture to a higher level, in a movement known as the Harlem Renaissance.
The Studio Museum of Harlem -- 124 West 125th Street
At The Studio Museum of Harlem, there is more about black history including guided tours, readings and exhibitions of African American art and culture. There is a suggested donation for entry.
The Apollo Theater - 253 West 125th Street
The Apollo Theater is one of the most famous and historic music hall in the U.S. This famous club is almost exclusively associated with African American music and performance. During the Harlem Renaissance and specifically in 1934, the Apollo Theater introduced its regular Amateur Night shows, during which many new stars were born and legends were made. In fact the Apollo launched the careers of famous artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, James Brown, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Mariah Carey...just to name a few. During amateur night, the audience would clap to approve the performers they liked and "boo" the performers they weren't too excited about. At that point an "executioner", a man with a broom, would sweep the bad performers off the stage. Even today, every Wednesday is Amateur Night at the Apollo.

Summer in NYC isn't really summer until you get your butt on a rooftop. My pick was Jimmy Rooftop. Sunday's after 3pm are bomb! Amazing music courtesy of DJ Cato. I believe it is doorman discretion, which means, dress your best and don't travel with a bunch of dudes. You get an amazing view of the sun setting over the Hudson River and you get to splash around in the pool if you so choose. I chose this spot because I used to work here and loved it!

Yes! Go to Church! After you party it up Saturday night or Sunday afternoon bring your sinful behind to this awesome church! You don't have to be religious to attend. This is a non-denominal church and people from all over the world come here for the amazing sermons and not to mention the interior. This Church is a converted theatre and a must see. Need to get around? Rent a bike! I have yet to try this but it seems fabulous! Save your feet and cover more ground. These bikes and bike spots are all over the city. A perfect way to burn calories and see more of the city faster.

Summer in NYC isn't really summer until you get your butt on a rooftop. My pick was Jimmy Rooftop. Sunday's after 3pm are bomb! Amazing music courtesy of DJ Cato. I believe it is doorman discretion, which means, dress your best and don't travel with a bunch of dudes. You get an amazing view of the sun setting over the Hudson River and you get to splash around in the pool if you so choose. I chose this spot because I used to work here and loved it!

Yes! Go to Church! After you party it up Saturday night or Sunday afternoon bring your sinful behind to this awesome church! You don't have to be religious to attend. This is a non-denominal church and people from all over the world come here for the amazing sermons and not to mention the interior. This Church is a converted theatre and a must see. Now go and pray!

In a city like New York this means we barely scratched the surface, but hopefully this video will highlight the cornucopia of possibilities that is the Big Apple.

Most journeys begin at Penn Station or Grand Central, and if you arrive at the later you'll be wowed by the building. The Meatpacking District was once home to markets, slaughterhouses, and packaging plants, but times have changed. Today you'll find a mixture of trendy restaurants, clubs and boutiques. The Village used to be a bohemian neighborhood that drew artists and musicians, but today you're more likely to find upper middle class families living here. Completed in 1883, Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Williamsburg has become popular given its lower rent prices. University students and young professionals have been flocking to this part of town.
You can walk along the riverfront for a great view of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and the Manhattan skyline. During the summer months, Bryant Park also becomes a popular hangout spot people looking to relax and even work on their tans. The Staten Island Ferry is free of charge and this makes it really popular with visitors who want to catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty from a distance. Battery Park is located on the southern tip of Manhattan. Having both lived in South Korea, we were thrilled to come across Manhattan's own Little Korea. Coney Island is all about good old fashioned fun. The Cloisters will make you feel like you've travelled over to Europe. Central Park is massive and there are so many places to visit within its boundaries. We managed to visit Belvedere Castle, the Great Lawn, Shakespeare Garden, The Ramble, The Jackie Onassis Reservoir, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, and we still left feeling like we barely scratched the surface.
And that concludes a look at our very busy week in New York City. I'm still shocked we managed to cover so many attractions, but the great thing about this city is that distances aren't very long and there's always something really cool worth checking out around each corner. History:
East Harlem has a long history as being home to immigrant groups. In the late 19th century, as Harlem grew up, East Harlem became the local home to many Italian immigrants and became known as Italian Harlem. In the early 20th century a growing population of Puerto Rican immigrants began to make their homes in the neighborhood and by the end of World War II they had become the dominate population in East Harlem. As a result Italian Harlem became known as Spanish Harlem or El Barrio.
El Museo Del Barrio
The Museo del Barrio is a museum founded in 1969 by teachers, parents and community activists It was created as a place to feature all types of art from Latin America and the Caribbean. Furthermore, the museum offers classes and lessons about the arts of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Duke Ellington Circle
There is a statue of Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington at the corner of 110th Street & Fifth Avenue. It is the first monument in New York City dedicated to an African-American. Duke Ellington was a musician, composer, orchestra conductor and one of the most influential artists in the history of jazz music.
Tito Puente Way
Did you know that many famous musicians who contributed to the modern "Latin Jazz" style of music were born and raised in Spanish Harlem? One of them is Tito Puente, who was born in East Harlem in 1923. By playing piano, clarinet, drums and timbales, he was able to fuse mambo, jazz and afro-Cuban drumming and take it to a higher level.
Latin Music and Food
Spanish Harlem is known for its many musicians, like Eddie & Charlie Palmieri, Ray Barretto, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra and many more. You can catch some live Latin music and delicious food at various venues in Harlem.
Patsy's Pizzeria
Some remnants of the Italian immigration are still visible in East Harlem. Patsy's Pizzeria was founded in 1933 by an Italian immigrant named Pasquale Lanceri. When it opened it was one of the first pizzerias in New York City that started selling pizza by the slice.
Rao's Restaurant
It opened in 1896 and is known for its Southern Italian cuisine and tomato sauce. The walls of this restaurant are covered with photos of celebrities who have dined here, including Jerry Lewis, Woody Allen, Muhammad Ali and many more.
All Saints Roman Catholic Church
The Church of All Saints was designed in 1892 by the same architect who designed St. Patrick's Cathedral, located at Fifth Avenue & 51st Street. It was built in Venetian Gothic style, with details in terra cotta, hand-carved pews and stained glass.

There are many stories about the difficulties of blacks traveling in the Southern and Northeastern United States but it was even more challenging for blacks to travel in the Western United States. Only six percent of the 100+ motels that lined Route 66 in Albuquerque, New Mexico admitted blacks, so a travel guide was an absolute necessity. Victor Green said he created the "Green Book" to "give the Negro traveler information that will keep him from running into difficulties, embarrassments and to make his trip more enjoyable.”

On October 17, 2016, the Institute for Public Knowledge hosted a book launch for Rebecca Solnit and Joshua Jelly-Schapiro's Nonstop Metropolis: A New York City Atlas. The editors were in conversation with several contributors, including IPK Visiting Scholar Garnette Cadogan.
Nonstop Metropolis, the culminating volume in a trilogy of atlases, conveys innumerable unbound experiences of New York City through twenty-six imaginative maps and informative essays. Bringing together the insights of dozens of experts—from linguists to music historians, ethnographers, urbanists, and environmental journalists—amplified by cartographers, artists, and photographers, it explores all five boroughs of New York City and parts of nearby New Jersey. We are invited to travel through Manhattan’s playgrounds, from polyglot Queens to many-faceted Brooklyn, and from the resilient Bronx to the mystical kung fu hip-hop mecca of Staten Island. The contributors to this exquisitely designed and gorgeously illustrated volume celebrate New York City’s unique vitality, its incubation of the avant-garde, and its literary history, but they also critique its racial and economic inequality, environmental impact, and erasure of its past. Nonstop Metropolis allows us to excavate New York’s buried layers, to scrutinize its political heft, and to discover the unexpected in one of the most iconic cities in the world. Rebecca Solnit is a writer, historian, activist, and author of eighteen books about environment, landscape, community, art, politics, hope, and feminism, including two atlases, of San Francisco in 2010 and, New Orleans in 2013; Men Explain Things to Me; The Faraway Nearby; A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster; A Field Guide to Getting Lost; Wanderlust: A History of Walking; and River of Shadows, Eadweard Muybridge and the Technological Wild West (for which she received a Guggenheim, the National Book Critics Circle Award in criticism, and the Lannan Literary Award). A product of the California public education system from kindergarten to graduate school, she is a columnist at Harper's and frequent contributor to the political site Tomdispatch.com.
Joshua Jelly-Schapiro is a geographer and writer whose work has appeared in publications including The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, Harper's, Artforum, and Transition, among many others. His upcoming book Island People: The Caribbean and the World, will be published by Knopf in November.
Garnette Cadogan is an essayist and journalist who focuses on history, culture, and the arts.
