Charlie Palmieri (November 21, 1927 – September 12, 1988) was a renowned bandleader and musical director of salsa music. He was known as "The Giant of the Keyboards".
Palmieri's parents migrated to New York from Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1926 and settled down in the South Bronx where Palmieri (birth name: Carlos Manuel Palmieri) was born. As a child, Palmieri taught himself to play the piano by ear. He attended the public school system. At age 7, his father enrolled him at The Juilliard School, where he took piano lessons. By the time Palmieri was 14 years old, he and his 5-year old brother, Eddie, participated in many talent contests, often winning prizes. It was at this time that his godfather introduced him to the music of the Latin bands - an experience which inspired him to become a musician.
In 1943, when still only 16 years old and still in high school, he made his professional debut as a piano player for the Osario Selasie Band. He graduated from high school in 1946, and immediately went to play for various bands. He made his recording debut with the song "Se Va La Rumba" as a member of the Rafael Muñiz Band.
Giant Step is a media, events and marketing company headquartered in New York City. The company formerly released music through its record label, Giant Step Records. Giant Step is divided into two entities - the Giant Step brand, which promotes music and the creative agency, Giant Step Marketing, which provides marketing services to corporate brands. The Giant Step brand aims to introduce quality music and talent to its community. The slogan of the creative agency, Giant Step Marketing is that of, "Elevating brands through music and culture."
Groove Academy began in 1990 as party in New York City. The party was a weekly production of British promoter, Maurice Bernstein, and his South African partner, Jonathan Rudnick. Initially unable to secure a loan from the bank, the pair borrowed money and used it to book acts and venues. “The stars of the 70’s, although they were highly sampled, were not getting recognition and were not being presented in a live forum,” recalls Rudnick. The two called their events, Groove Academy with its slogan, “Dedicated to the preservation of Funk.”

It is a day of reflection and Charlie Palmieri enters my thoughts. He is among the musicians who invite to their homes for interviews while I'm at Latin NY !977-79. Others include Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, Machito, Louie Ramirez, Henry Fiol, Jimmy Sabater, Andy Gonzalez plus many more. Things are different in those days. The majority of the musicians on the "cuchifrito" circuit live in NYC. Access to them is universal. We emphasize live music in Salsa Magazine. Check out Charlie Palmieri performing Live and Direct. Record producer Al Santiago used Salsa as part of the Alegre Record Marketing lexicon as early as 1962. The ubiquitous “Uncle Alegre”. He’s Uncle Al to all of us who buy his Alegre records and seek him out at the original Casalegre Music Shop. That heavyset 24K Manic Depressive in the classic sense uncle every family has whose so restless he recreates the Sistine Chapel ceiling in his living room out of chalk pastel because his wife tells him to touch up the room. It doesn’t matter where this type of fella is – he’ll always create something to entertain himself. Overworks, overeats, over drinks TYPE A+ Personality, that’s our Al Our Man in the Bronx.” In the 1930's Puerto Rican record producer Gabriel Oller makes a living selling acetates of hot Latin bands to labels like RCA Victor. I meet Joey Pastrana via Latin NY in 1977/78. At the time he has finished producing a 12 inch Percussive single targetting the Disco crowd of the period. He gives me my first set of Timbale sticks in 1978 and teaches me pointers at his house. (He doesn't live far from our home in the North Bronx.) He also gives me a copy of his 1972 LP El Padrino. An interesting thing about the LP is that it features "El Telefonito" later made famous by Ruben Blades and Willy Colon. On the 1972 LP it features Joey Pastrana as the composer. On the Fania release it shows (DR) Derechos Reservados. The DR tactic is used by Fania accounting to divert millions of dollars into escrow accounts that are later looted when Fania is sold. Joey Pastrana nació un 22 de Agosto de 1942, en Santurce,Puerto Rico, fue uno ...
Bravisimo Live from the Hollywood Palladium Featuring Mr Salsa Izzy Sanabria and the Ray Barretto Orchestra.

Orquesta Broadway are a charanga, a Latin band of flute, violins, rhythm section and voices. They were co-founded in 1962 by Eddy Zervigón (b. 7 July 1940, Güines, Cuba) and Roberto Torres and have proved to be one of New York’s longest surviving charangas. Eddy’s twin brother, Ruddy, a violinist, was a founder member and his youngest brother, Kelvin, initially played güiro (gourd scraper) and later the piano. At the age of 15 Eddy switched from piccolo to flute on the advice of Richard Egües, flautist with the great Cuban charanga, Orquesta Aragón. In 1958, Eddy and Ruddy co-led the band La Ideal. In 1960, when José Fajardo left Cuba for the USA, Eddy filled his place in his former group, renamed the Estrellas Cubanas. Eddy left Cuba in April 1962, did a four-month stint in Miami with his...
I attend my first "Salsa" live concert in 1974 at Carnegie Hall. I'm 17 years old and date Rose "Lupe" Santos, my Senior Year Cardinal Hayes HS South Bronx Girlfriend 1974-75 (she attends Mother Butler HS). Lupe is the one who teaches me how to "Salsa Dance" and pulls me out into the aisle when Joe Cuba performs. I run into her in 2002 and I have to say I am flooded with good time memories. About the concert. Before the Salsoul Orchestra releases their percussion infected version of 2001, Tito Puente has already arranged the composition with a monstrous percussion swing beat that I see him perform both at Carnewgie Hall in 1974 and St George Hotel in Brooklyn in 1976. Three trumpets were later added and they became the Orlando Marín Conjunto. Marín assumed leadership after Palmieri’s departure to Johnny Seguí’s group. Eddie Palmieri (born December 15, 1936), is a Grammy Award winning Puerto Rican pianist, bandleader and musician, best known for combining jazz piano and instrumental solos with Latin rhythms. Welcome to this very special edition of the Pace Report. Pianist, composer, bandleader, and educator Eddie Palmieri has been a very important as well as towering figure in the world of jazz which spans some seven decades. The 10-Time Grammy Award Winner and 2012 NEA Jazz Master is the founding member of La Perfecta which began during the late 1950's in which Palmieri shifted and created a rhythm section that featured two trombones and flute. His brother, the late Charlie Palmieri is credited as one of Eddie's early influences as both a pianist as well as bandleader. Before Eddie became a pianist he began playing timbales in his uncle's band while studying piano as a kid. Throughout his career, Eddie has recorded music on Alegre Records, Tico Records, and Fania Records, labels that were st...
