    MIT Media Lab

    The MIT Media Lab is an interdisciplinary research laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology devoted to projects at the convergence of technology, multimedia, sciences, art and design. Staff and students have backgrounds ranging from electrical engineering and computer science to sociology and music and others. The Media Lab has been widely popularized since the 1990s by business and technology publications such as Wired and Red Herring for a series of practical inventions in the fields of wireless networks, field sensing, web browsers and the World Wide Web. As of 2014, it has diversified its research into neurobiology, biologically inspired fabrication, socially engaging robots, emotive computing, bionics, and hyperinstruments. The One Laptop per Child (OLPC) was one of the notable research efforts which grew out of the Media Lab.

    The Media Lab has been actively conducting workshops around the world, with much focus on innovation through design. The Media Labs has regional branches throughout the world which are responsible for conducting such events, including developing countries like India.

    Social media are computer-mediated tools that allow people or companies to create, share, or exchange information, career interests, ideas, and pictures/videos in virtual communities and networks. Social media is defined as "a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content." Furthermore, social media depend on mobile and web-based technologies to create highly interactive platforms through which individuals and communities share, co-create, discuss, and modify user-generated content. They introduce substantial and pervasive changes to communication between businesses, organizations, communities, and individuals. These changes are the focus of the emerging field of technoself studies. Social media differ from traditional or industrial media in many ways, including quality,reach, frequency, usability, immediacy, and permanence. Social media operate in a dialogic transmission system (many sources to many receivers). This is in contrast to traditional media that operates under a monologic transmission model (one source to many receivers).

Discussions forums can sometimes offer substantial, interesting and meaty food for thought, but more often they devolve into a blathering mess of unintelligible name-calling and vulgarity. Whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any social media site, anyone with computer access can log on and begin sharing their thoughts with the world, regardless of how dim-witted they may be. While you may secretly feel that your friends, family and colleagues have produced some pretty dumb posts that have scrolled across your news feed, they’ve probably still got a ways to go in order to catch up with this group of social media-driven online comments that can prompt an ‘SMH’ from their readers. Even when compared to the typical dose of ignorance and foolishness found online, these posts represent a whole new, low level of stupid. While it’s always possible that these are highly intelligent individuals who also happen to be masters in the art of trolling, we’re taking these comments and statuses at face value. And at face value, these comments are pretty darn stupid. Now, it’s worth noting that there are things far worse than a few eye roll-worthy social media posts, including that which exists online. Unlike some of the vile racist, homophobic and/or misogynistic hate spewed on social media sites, on discussion forums and in chat rooms, these foot-in-mouth statements are mostly harmless and benign. You read the comment, have a laugh, wonder if the poster could really be that stupid and then move on. But dumb posts extend past the realm of random individuals to brand image-minded corporations, for whom a poorly thought out tweet could have more widespread, damaging ramifications. This list also includes instances of social media faux pas by prominent, visible companies who slipped up by rushing to put out sharable content to maximize their reach and were burned for it in the end. Some of the mistakes made here, all of which have remained forever present online to haunt their author and provide an endless source of amusement for readers, could have been prevented with just a little more dedicated time and thought. If the writer behind these posts had, perhaps, just read their message over and thought through what they were saying prior to hitting enter, then maybe they could have spared themselves a healthy dose of red-faced humiliation. Then again, some of these ill-advised comments have found their way onto this list because of the clear implication that they hadn’t made some minor typo but had clearly expressed something remarkably false that they had believed to be true. To refer to the President of the United States as “barraco barner�? requires more than just a simple spell check fail. So let us celebrate these wonderful moments of bewildering, hilarious social media stupidity. After all, I’d much rather be entertained by posts like these than scroll through the vacation pics of a distant old high school acquaintance. I stress myself out so much sometimes wtf is my deal�? and only a day later confessed QUOTE: “I'm done faking it I'm honestly at a really shitty place mentally�? His fans were quick to tweet a flood of virtual love, showing support sending kind words of empathy and encouragement. On top of that, the following day, Ethan explained that he wouldn't be posting his usual video on YouTube that day because he was recovering from a hand surgery writing: “Prob not going to be able to get a video up sorry guys... just had hand surgery today and recovering. I'll be okay all good�? This isn’t the first time one of the brothers has addressed something of the nature. Back in 2016 Grayson said in a very personal video QUOTE: "Sometimes I have anxiety attacks so bad that I fall on the floor and I literally can’t move and I feel like I can’t breathe and I feel like I’m gonna die." The fact that Ethan has gone completely radio silent on social media following his tweets is a bit worrisome. However at the same time, I’m hoping he’s taking a step back from social media to focus on himself. Health is such a priority, whether physical or mental — and I think it’s okay for him to take a step back from constantly promoting his life to find what it is that will make him happier in the long run.     Is it possible that the exclamation of the end of the world is able to provoke the apocalypse? We are inside an american printery for newspaper in the 1950s now. A freshly printed newspaper comes to the fore. The headline proclaims the end of the world and pushes us straight towards the reports of the financial crisis of nowadays at the same time. The illustration of a comet, which is running down to the earth, intensifies the impression of the approaching end. The film asks the question which consequences could be caused by information and news. With regard to the financial crisis, the metaphor is a kind of an exaggerated persiflage: only the message of the apocalypse causes the end of the world – a self-fulfilling prophecy caused by the media! The layout of the newspaper changes during the film parallel to the dramatic of the story. The first reaction releases a visual chaos which develops while the film continues. An information flood takes the audience by surprise. Letters, words, graphics, illustrations, photo collage – the whole design collapses like an avalanche and is getting rebuild in the form of the comet, which is made of terms and graphical material.

Discussions forums can sometimes offer substantial, interesting and meaty food for thought, but more often they devolve into a blathering mess of unintelligible name-calling and vulgarity. Whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any social media site, anyone with computer access can log on and begin sharing their thoughts with the world, regardless of how dim-witted they may be. While you may secretly feel that your friends, family and colleagues have produced some pretty dumb posts that have scrolled across your news feed, they’ve probably still got a ways to go in order to catch up with this group of social media-driven online comments that can prompt an ‘SMH’ from their readers. Even when compared to the typical dose of ignorance and foolishness found online, these posts represent a whole new, low level of stupid. While it’s always possible that these are highly intelligent individuals who also happen to be masters in the art of trolling, we’re taking these comments and statuses at face value. And at face value, these comments are pretty darn stupid. Now, it’s worth noting that there are things far worse than a few eye roll-worthy social media posts, including that which exists online. Unlike some of the vile racist, homophobic and/or misogynistic hate spewed on social media sites, on discussion forums and in chat rooms, these foot-in-mouth statements are mostly harmless and benign. You read the comment, have a laugh, wonder if the poster could really be that stupid and then move on. But dumb posts extend past the realm of random individuals to brand image-minded corporations, for whom a poorly thought out tweet could have more widespread, damaging ramifications. This list also includes instances of social media faux pas by prominent, visible companies who slipped up by rushing to put out sharable content to maximize their reach and were burned for it in the end. Some of the mistakes made here, all of which have remained forever present online to haunt their author and provide an endless source of amusement for readers, could have been prevented with just a little more dedicated time and thought. If the writer behind these posts had, perhaps, just read their message over and thought through what they were saying prior to hitting enter, then maybe they could have spared themselves a healthy dose of red-faced humiliation. Then again, some of these ill-advised comments have found their way onto this list because of the clear implication that they hadn’t made some minor typo but had clearly expressed something remarkably false that they had believed to be true. To refer to the President of the United States as “barraco barner�? requires more than just a simple spell check fail. So let us celebrate these wonderful moments of bewildering, hilarious social media stupidity. After all, I’d much rather be entertained by posts like these than scroll through the vacation pics of a distant old high school acquaintance. Just after the Dolan Twins celebrated four million subscribers on YouTube, Ethan got candid about his mental health on Twitter first writing QUOTE: “I need to chill tf out. I stress myself out so much sometimes wtf is my deal�? and only a day later confessed QUOTE: “I'm done faking it I'm honestly at a really shitty place mentally�? His fans were quick to tweet a flood of virtual love, showing support sending kind words of empathy and encouragement. On top of that, the following day, Ethan explained that he wouldn't be posting his usual video on YouTube that day because he was recovering from a hand surgery writing: “Prob not going to be able to get a video up sorry guys... just had hand surgery today and recovering. I'll be okay all good�? This isn’t the first time one of the brothers has addressed something of the nature. Back in 2016 Grayson said in a very personal video QUOTE: "Sometimes I have anxiety attacks so bad that I fall on the floor and I literally can’t move and I feel like I can’t breathe and I feel like I’m gonna die." The fact that Ethan has gone completely radio silent on social media following his tweets is a bit worrisome. However at the same time, I’m hoping he’s taking a step back from social media to focus on himself. Health is such a priority, whether physical or mental — and I think it’s okay for him to take a step back from constantly promoting his life to find what it is that will make him happier in the long run.     Is it possible that the exclamation of the end of the world is able to provoke the apocalypse? We are inside an american printery for newspaper in the 1950s now. A freshly printed newspaper comes to the fore. The headline proclaims the end of the world and pushes us straight towards the reports of the financial crisis of nowadays at the same time. The illustration of a comet, which is running down to the earth, intensifies the impression of the approaching end. The film asks the question which consequences could be caused by information and news. With regard to the financial crisis, the metaphor is a kind of an exaggerated persiflage: only the message of the apocalypse causes the end of the world – a self-fulfilling prophecy caused by the media! The layout of the newspaper changes during the film parallel to the dramatic of the story. The first reaction releases a visual chaos which develops while the film continues. An information flood takes the audience by surprise. Letters, words, graphics, illustrations, photo collage – the whole design collapses like an avalanche and is getting rebuild in the form of the comet, which is made of terms and graphical material.

The motion graphics animation was created by Aaron Seymour, using After Effects. I researched the material ( along with the ANMM curators) and provided creative direction for the overall project. The answer to a common question: yes, colors are "real" and not exaggerated by digital enhancement. We have only applied basic white balance correction. However, we used specialized lights to mimic the underwater ambient spectrum. When photographers use white light (artificial spectrum) on corals, they simply miss the vast majority of colours. Corals have spectrum-sensitive colouration due to fluorescent pigments. The duration of sequences varied from 20 minutes to 6+ hours. === Technical details === To make this little clip we took 150000 shots. Why so many? Because macro photography involves shallow depth of field. To extend it, we used focus stacking and deconvolution algorithms. Each frame of the video is actually a stack that consists of 3-12 shots. Just the intro and the last scene are regular real-time footage. One frame required about 10 minutes of processing time (raw conversion + stacking + deconvolution in some scenes). Unfortunately, the success rate was very low due to copious technical challenges and we spent almost 9 long months to get it right. Marketers have a lot of tools at their disposal to boost and track social ROI. For example: meta tags, inbound traffic, UV attribution, rich content (pins, cards, videos), native platform analytics. — Ryan: Get friendly with your data. Know what to look for and how to show attribution from referral domains, session duration, site activity (i.e. add to cart/checkout, click events, shopper pairing). — Ryan: Social ads have come a long way. We now have better segmentation “clusters,�? better attribution tools, 1st and 3rd party data integration, and industry demand for accountability. –- Ryan: User-generated content is your digital reputation. Rating and reviews drive sales and have now become synonymous with online shopping. — Some tactics for social media and retail sales: Know your social path to purchase, know that inspiration drives sales (engage with your compelling content), and use check-ins for an easy attribution tool (even though it might seem passé, this is extremely valuable data that we cannot ignore). — Ryan: Social incentives are not about the deal. It’s about driving brand awareness. Social incentive campaigns build stickiness and helps to drive brand awareness, gain deeper shopper insights, and build long-term attribution models. — Sales area long-tail game. You must put your due diligence it and do the foundational work. Leverage the basic industry tools (e.g. Twitter Cards, Rich Pins, YouTube Annotations, Google Analytics, and check-in data), know when your channel strengths lie, and be inspirational! — Ryan: Don’t be a brand who’s always asking for likes, loves, follows, and pins. Have tact. Maintain balance and trust to make sure your sales-focused content isn’t entirely too overt. Q & A: Q: How often do you meet with your sales leadership team to talk about performance? A: Ryan: We meet almost bi-weekly to keep them in the loop on our initiatives. Constant communication is key to stay ahead of industry trends. Q: How is your team linked with the sales team? A: Ryan says that he is the liaison between the groups, mainly because he can channel things out to his team. It is helpful to have one person to own the relationship between teams. Q: I am from a B2B company and struggle with lead generation from social media. How can we drive this and encourage our people to get more leads? Any tips or tricks?     This title shows excerpts from a 12 minute original work created by my company, CDP Media, in 2001 for the Watermarks exhibition at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney. The motion graphics animation was created by Aaron Seymour, using After Effects. I researched the material ( along with the ANMM curators) and provided creative direction for the overall project. I've uploaded it here for reference purposes, as the media has long since been discontinued at the museum. Oskar Speck was 25 and unemployed when he left Germany by kayak in 1932. Originally intending to find work in a neighbouring country he ended up travelling, by kayak, across the world to Australia. Arriving in 1939, he was immediately interned for the duration of the Second World War. During his travels, Oscar Speck took photographs and made detailed diary entries. On arrival in the Indonesian archipelago (then the Dutch East Indies) he obtained a 9mm film camera and filmed many remarkable records of everyday life among the coastal peoples he met and camped with. CDP designer Aaron Seymour created a 12 minute motion graphics map depicting the path Oscar Speck took across the world. His original photos, passport entries, newspaper clippings and a montage created from his many hours of extraordinary unseen footage were incorporated to illustrate the journey. The program was displayed on a high-resolution LCD monitor set into a showcase containing various mementos, a model and a contemporary ‘Folbot’, the type of one-man kayak he used for his journey.
