Freedom of speech is the right to communicate one's opinions and ideas without fear of government retaliation or censorship. The term freedom of expression is sometimes used synonymously, but includes any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used.
Governments restrict speech with varying limitations. Common limitations on speech relate to libel, slander, obscenity, pornography, sedition, incitement, fighting words, classified information, copyright violation, trade secrets, non-disclosure agreements, right to privacy, right to be forgotten, public security, public order, public nuisance, campaign finance reform and oppression. Whether these limitations can be justified under the harm principle depends upon whether influencing a third party's opinions or actions adversely to the second party constitutes such harm or not. Governmental and other compulsory organizations often have policies restricting the freedom of speech for political reasons, for example, speech codes at state schools.
A film festival is an organized, extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Increasingly, film festivals show some films outdoors. Films may be of recent date and, depending upon the festival's focus, can include international and domestic releases. Some festivals focus on a specific film-maker or genre (e.g., film noir) or subject matter (e.g., horror film festivals). A number of film festivals specialise in short films of a defined maximum length. Film festivals are typically annual events. Some film historians do not consider Film Festivals as official releases of film, like Jerry Beck. The best known film festivals are the Venice Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the Toronto Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and the Berlin International Film Festival, the latter being the largest film festival worldwide, based on attendance. The Venice Film Festival is the oldest major festival. The Melbourne International Film Festival is the largest film festival in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the oldest in the world. A 2013 study found 3,000 active films festivals worldwide—active defined as having held an event in the previous 24 months.
Speech is the vocalized form of human communication. It is based upon the syntactic combination of lexicals and names that are drawn from very large (usually about 1,000 different words) vocabularies. Each spoken word is created out of the phonetic combination of a limited set of vowel and consonant speech sound units. These vocabularies, the syntax which structures them, and their set of speech sound units differ, creating the existence of many thousands of different types of mutually unintelligible human languages. Most human speakers are able to communicate in two or more of them, hence being polyglots. The vocal abilities that enable humans to produce speech also provide humans with the ability to sing.
A gestural form of human communication exists for the deaf in the form of sign language. Speech in some cultures has become the basis of a written language, often one that differs in its vocabulary, syntax and phonetics from its associated spoken one, a situation called diglossia. Speech in addition to its use in communication, it is suggested by some psychologists such as Vygotsky is internally used by mental processes to enhance and organize cognition in the form of an interior monologue.
Christopher Eric Hitchens (13 April 1949 – 15 December 2011) was an English American author, essayist, orator, religious and literary critic, and journalist. Hitchens later spent much of his career in the United States and became a US citizen in 2007.
He contributed to New Statesman, The Nation, The Atlantic, London Review of Books, The Times Literary Supplement, Slate, and Vanity Fair. Hitchens was the author, co-author, editor or co-editor of over 30 books, including five collections of essays, on a range of subjects, including politics, literature, and religion. A staple of talk shows and lecture circuits, his confrontational style of debate made him both a lauded and controversial figure. Known for his contrarian stance on a number of issues, Hitchens criticized such public and generally popular figures as Mother Teresa; Bill Clinton; Henry Kissinger; Princess Diana; and Pope Benedict XVI. He was the elder brother of the conservative journalist and author Peter Hitchens.

Should offensive speech be banned? Where should we, as a society, draw the line where permitted speech is on one side, and forbidden speech is on the other? Should we even have that line? And should free speech be limited by things like trigger warnings and punishments for microaggressions? The faculty council at Occidental College is considering instituting a system for students to report microaggressions perpetrated against them by faculty members or other students. Reason TV visited Occidental's campus to find out what exactly constitutes a microaggression. One Columbia psychology professor defined the term this way: Microaggressions are the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, which communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership. After exploring the limitations of a microaggression reporting system, we discussed broader free speech issues with the students in the wake of a month of campus protests that resulted in...

4-26-17: Tucker debates campus free speech with Colby College Professor Aaron Hanlon after Ann Coulter had to cancel her talk at UC Berkeley.
Today, FINALLY, Craig is going to talk about Free Speech! Now, free speech is so important because it not only allows you to critique the government, but it also protects you from the government. But it's essential to remember that not ALL speech is protected equally under the First Amendment, and just because you have a right to free speech doesn't mean your employer, for instance, can't fire you for something you say (unless your work for the government and then things get a bit more complicated). So we'll take a look at a couple significant Supreme Court cases that have gotten us to our current definition of free speech, and we'll also discuss some of the more controversial aspects of free speech - like hate speech. Produced in collaboration with PBS Digital Studios: http://youtube.co...
Freedom of speech is thought of as a key part of our democracy. But is one person's version of free speech the same as another's? What if an individual disagrees with another's statement? The Agenda explores the boundaries of what you can say, what you can't say, and how the notion of free speech is changing.

I Have a Dream Speech Martin Luther King's Address at March on Washington August 28, 1963. Washington, D.C. When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"
For nearly 140 years speakers have been free to speak publicly at Speakers Corner in Hyde Park, London. This is just a glimpse of their 'freedom of speech' held every Sunday. It is great entertainment, pretty noisy and there always some pretty colourful characters and discussions. Some famous past speakers include Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, George Orwell and William Morris. Hope you enjoy it! :)

In a culture where the natural is dressed to fit the part
We've powdered milk and cartoon cows
Sky is on the box the parks are where we fit the cars
And obesity is sold by clowns
When every time religion comes we grab the shopping cart
And curse the price of charity
The only time we pray for help its for a credit card
That stretches to eternity
It's what we think we ought to do
It's not exactly ours to choose
Cos people do the things they do
It's how it goes and who are you to moan?
I said it seems to me that most of this dependency
On progress God and how it's been
Just causes stress and misery
Let's have some mental liberation
Until we do then no one's really free
As the world goes up itself about celebrity and wealth
There's war and raw hypocrisy
And still no freedom for the free
To get together all day long
And tell the fuckers this is wrong!
The nanny state does not forgive your sins
And they know where you live
Let's have some mental liberation
Until we do then no one's really
Free speech - illusion
Reach the conclusion
Those who set the limits on freedom
Won't let you say we don't need them
For fear of losing freedom do we keep it all inside?
Being quiet in the name of peace
The courts are full of people with opinions to defend
But it doesn't get the press release
If every step is marching to the bus to take us back
To hear that nothing changed again
Remember all the facts before the media attack
The pictures in your heart and pictures in your brain
Cos I was there and so were you
And several thousand others too
While opinions of millions were shaped by papers and the news
And you were there and so were we
So who has the authority
To shape perception to the point of calling it reality?
Let's have some mental liberation
Until we do then no one's really free
Let's have some mental liberation
