Kollam (IPA: [koɭɭam]) or Quilon (Coulão), formerly Desinganadu, is an old seaport and city on the Laccadive Sea coast in Kerala, India on Ashtamudi Lake. Kollam has had a strong commercial reputation since the days of the Phoenicians and Romans. Fed by the Chinese trade, it was mentioned by Ibn Battuta in the 14th century as one of the five Indian ports he had seen during the course of his twenty-four year travels. Desinganadu's rajas exchanged embassies with Chinese rulers while there was a flourishing Chinese settlement at Kollam. In the 9th Century, on his way to Canton, China, Persian merchant Sulaiman al-Tajir found Kollam to be the only port in India visited by huge Chinese junks. Marco Polo, the great Venetian traveller, who was in Chinese service under Kublai Khan in 1275, visited Kollam and other towns on the west coast, in his capacity as a Chinese mandarin.
V. Nagam Aiya in his Travancore State Manual records that in 822 AD two East Syrian bishops Mar Sabor and Mar Proth, settled in Quilon with their followers. Two years later the Malabar Era began (824 AD) and Quilon became the premier city of the Malabar region ahead of Travancore and Cochin.Kollam Port was founded by Mar Sabor at Thangasseri in 825 as an alternative to reopening the inland sea port of Kore-ke-ni Kollam near Backare (Thevalakara), which was also known as Nelcynda and Tyndis to the Romans and Greeks and as Thondi to the Tamils.

Ashtamudi Lake (Ashtamudi Kayal), in the Kollam District of the Indian state of Kerala, is the most visited backwater and lake in the state. It possesses a unique wetland ecosystem and a large palm-shaped (also described as octopus-shaped) water body, second only in size to the Vembanad estuary ecosystem of the state. Ashtamudi means 'eight coned' (Ashta : 'eight'; mudi : 'coned') in the local Malayalam language. The name is indicative of the lake's topography with its multiple branches. The lake is also called the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala and is well known for its houseboat and backwater resorts. Ashtamudi Wetland was included in the list of wetlands of international importance, as defined by the Ramsar Convention for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands.
Along both banks of the lake and its backwater canals, coconut groves and palm trees interspersed with towns and villages are seen. Kollam, (formerly Quilon) is an important historic port city located on the right bank of the lake. Boat cruises are operated by the Kollam Boat Club from Kollam to Alappuzha providing transport access to many other towns and villages along this route. Luxury houseboats also operate on the lake. The boat journey is an 8-hour trip, winds through lakes, canals and water bound villages, and gives complete exposure to the beauty of the backwaters of Ashtamudi Lake. Chinese fishing nets, called cheena vala in Malayalam, are used by local fisherman and are a common sight along the waterway.
A watch is a small timepiece intended to be carried or worn by a person. It is designed to keep working despite the motions caused by the person's activities. A wristwatch is designed to be worn on a wrist, attached by a watch strap or other type of bracelet. A pocket watch is designed for a person to carry in a pocket.
Watches evolved in the 17th century from spring-powered clocks, which appeared as early as the 14th century. The first watches were strictly mechanical, driven by clockwork. As technology progressed, mechanical devices, used to control the speed of the watch, were largely superseded by vibrating quartz crystals that produce accurately timed electronic pulses. Some watches use radio clock technology to regularly correct the time. The first digital electronic watch was developed in 1970.
Most inexpensive and medium-priced watches, used mainly for timekeeping, are electronic watches with quartz movements. Expensive collectible watches, valued more for their elaborate craftsmanship, aesthetic appeal and glamorous design than for simple timekeeping, often have purely mechanical movements and are powered by springs, even though these movements are generally less accurate and more expensive than electronic ones. Various extra features, called "complications", such as moon-phase displays and the different types of tourbillon, are sometimes included. Modern watches often display the day, date, month and year, and electronic watches may have many other functions. Time-related features such as timers, chronographs and alarm functions are common. Some modern designs incorporate calculators, GPS and Bluetooth technology or have heart-rate monitoring capabilities. Watches incorporating GPS receivers use them not only to determine their position. They also receive and use time signals from the satellites, which make them essentially perfectly accurate timekeepers, even over long periods of time.

Hello everybody !!! Have you ever pondered about the fact that we mostly live in our minds ?? Not only individually, as we perceive the whole world through our minds. But also collectively. The whole world's environment is shaped by humans' thoughts and visions. We have not only built cities, but we have transformed forests, plains, rivers ... We have created myths, stories, laws, worldvisions, orders, meanings ... Sometimes beautifully, sometimes not ... Art is a direct reflection of our mental universes. Certain forms of art very explicitly link us to our inner worlds. The beautiful dreamtime art of the Australian indigenous people is an example. The beautiful mandalas from the diverse Indian traditions are another example. Indian culture has a very beautiful aspect. It is to interwe...
Hello everybody !!! In the South of India, there is a beautiful tradition to draw Kollams in front of the houses every morning. It welcomes all the passers by and enlivens them with good spirits. I always enjoy to walk in the streets of Pondicherry or any South Indian city in the morning and to be greeted by all these beautiful shapes, and ... - on special occasions - colours. Kollams used to be made of rice powder. So they did not only look nice, but also fed the ants and the insects ... which is a generous and clever thing to do : by feeding them on the doorstep, they may not come into your kitchen !!! Nowadays white or coloured powder is used. On normal days, more simple Kollams are drawn in the morning just in white. For special occasions, like Pongal, Shiva Raatri, New Year, Christm...
Namrata, my wife & me Ananth, had planned a ride from Mumbai to Kanyakumari, India & back. It was a well planned ride with a lot of stops at South Goa - Palolem, Uidpi, Mulki, Coorg, Coonoor, Munnar, Kollam, Kovallam & finally Kanyakumari. At Coorg, we ran into a crazy cyclone, which was when we decided to come back to Mumbai by train, post Kanyakumari. The ride was amazing, except a few bad stretches from Karwar-Mangalore & few parts of Tamil Nadu. My bike, a Royal Enfield C500, was a smoother. Damn good torque made the ride a breezer in the mountain ranges. Good seats and the electra handle bar made sure there was no stress on our bodies. Kudos to Namrata for be a patient pillion on the 2500 km ride. Shot entirely by a GoPro Hero2 & a Canon 550 D using the stock 18-55mm lens & the 5...
The first big skip of the journey. Initially, it looked as if the train would halt there, but it went through the station much to my delight.

Hello everybody !!! I am very happy :-). I just found this raw video footage on one of my old back up DVDs. I was staying in Pondicherry, South India, for a couple of months in 2006. One day, when I was at the French Institute, there were these two ladies making a beautiful Kollam for a function (for those of you intrigued about what Kollams are about, check out my video "Creating Beauty. The Art of Kollam"). I had my photo camera with me and I could not resist filming :-). The only thing was that I only had something like one minute of memory for recording video on my photo camera (times have changed since !!!). So I always had to film for a minute, then transfer the footage to my Labtop Computer (which was also quite slow ...), and then go back filming :-). It was a nice filming expe...
Hello everybody !!! In 2006, I spent a couple of months in Pondicherry, in the South of India. I enjoyed walking around the city and had my little photo camera with me. It happened that my camera needed a change from taking pictures and wanted to film ... So here are some of my Pondicherry impressions of 2006 accompanied by Pravin Godkhindi's "Bhoop". Plenty of good and sunny inspirations to all of you !!! Christoph
Sriram and I had planned to board the Kollam-bound passenger at Kazhakuttam. After Sriram tried to ascertain the train's status, we entered the platform just in time to capture the speeding Janshatabdi. It was refreshing to see all thirteen coaches having the same livery.

A child was born into this world
With great emotion he was loved
The evil seed slept in his body
Spreading it's roots before the glory
The hell was risen when he was twelve
The squeeze of the trigger was a move he did well
So he killed his parents killed his friends
With black spirit he filled himself
Soon he was taken in custody
But the inner seed was so well-rooted
He needed more the evil doer
[Chorus:]
With terminal intensity operation was made
His ties were broken and the doors opened
With terminal intensity and hardened heart
Now walking among us a voice in his head
He has an agenda a secret mission
Taking orders from higher levels
Fighting a battle for you and me
So we can live in our world of dreams
Tottering on the edge of the grave
Facing violence every day
Causes the new set of priorities
Kills with a pleasure every day
And the hindbrain behind will be safe
From the extra people to play his game
Wrapping himself up in mystery
[Chorus:]
With terminal intensity the plan was made
But there is no control in evils way
With terminal intensity all hell´s breaking loose
No-one can control how evil moves
Unestrained anger deep inside
Turns himself against the person of high
But will be killed in the name of law
