Based on the long-running comic strip created by E.C. Segar (and less on the animated cartoons created by Max Fleischer, which were decidedly different in tone and approach), Popeye follows the sailor man with the mighty arms (played by Robin Williams in his first major film role) as he arrives in the seaside community of Sweethaven in search of his long-lost father. Popeye meets and quickly falls for the slender Olive Oyl (Shelley Duvall, in the role she was born to play), but Olive's hand has already been promised to the hulking Bluto (Paul Smith), of whom Olive can say little except, well, he's large. Popeye (1980 film)
Popeye is a 1980 American musical comedy film directed by Robert Altman. It is a live-action film adaptation of E. C. Segar's Popeye comic strip and stars Robin Williams as Popeye the Sailor Man and Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl.
The film premiered on December 6, 1980 in Los Angeles, California, to mixed reviews and disappointing box office. The film has since been released on DVD as well as digital download and Netflix instant streaming. Harry Nilsson's soundtrack received mostly positive reviews.
Plot
Popeye, a sailor, arrives at the small coastal town of Sweethaven ("Sweethaven—An Anthem") while searching for his long-lost father. He is immediately feared by the townsfolk simply because he is a stranger ("Blow Me Down"), and is accosted by a greedy taxman. He rents a room at the Oyl family's boarding house where the Oyls' daughter, Olive, is preparing for her engagement party. Her hand is promised to Captain Bluto, a powerful, perpetually angry bully who runs the town in the name of the mysterious Commodore. In the morning, Popeye visits the local diner for breakfast ("Everything Is Food") and demonstrates his strength as he brawls with a gang of provocative ruffians who give him and the other customers a hard time.

I sang Best Friend -- the theme song to the television show The Courtship Of Eddie's Father -- to myself maybe every day for five years, as a child. The memory of Nilsson's harmonies inhabited the electrical impulses of my brain at an early age, and I'm grateful. I also remember his version of the Badfinger song, Without You, being somewhat inescapable in the 1970s. When that song came on the radio, and even when it was just "sampled" in tv commercials selling 1970s pop hit compilations on vinyl (and 8-track tape!), that velvety voice stopped you where you stood. It was that powerful. I didn't have access to Nilsson's musical oeuvre though until I was an adult, when I purchased an RCA cd compilation in 1988. I was so taken by Nilsson's whiskey-soaked, wry version of Song Of The South's Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah on Hal Wilner's Disney project from 1988, Stay Awake, that I needed to delve deeper. I'm glad I did. I felt that an entire generation (my generation) had been deprived of the incredible work Harry Nilsson had accomplished in a 13 to 15-year period. Until the 1990s, much of it was unavailable on cd. The density and quality of Nilsson's work can not be understated. As much as he was famous for two interpretations of other composer's songs (Fred Neil's Everybody's Talkin' and Badfinger's Without You, covered as well with much success by Mariah Carey, but following Harry and Richard Perry's arrangement blueprint), Harry was considered to be a songwriter's songwriter. Meaning, this cat could write a tune. So many of his songs could be considered standards: This Could Be The Night (the infamous song he co-wrote with Phil Spector), Cuddly Toy (given to the Monkees), One (given to Three Dog Night, although interpreted very well by Aimee Mann), Without Her (not the same song as Without You!), Gotta Get Up, Coconut, Jump Into The Fire, 1941, The Moonbeam Song, Remember (Christmas), Think About Your Troubles, Me And My Arrow, Don't Forget Me (interpreted most effectively by Marianne Faithfull)... I could go on and on. And on. Really. So many filmmakers and music supervisors for film and television are re-discovering Nilsson as well. P.T. Anderson reminded us of the greatness of Harry's song He Needs Me, written for the ill-fated Robert Altman film from 1980, Popeye, when he used it as a centrepiece in his film Punch Drunk Love (2002). Intelligent cinematic pop band Clare And The Reasons have been touring internationally with the legendary Van Dyke Parks, covering this song, exposing its greatness to a whole new audience. Much has been written about Nilsson's excesses, and it is unfortunate that the man passed away at such an early age (at 52 in 1994), but I choose to celebrate the work he left behind for us to enjoy. The one song I've always thought was an undiscovered treat, is the 1976 chestnut, written with his old friend, arranger/composer Perry Botkin Jr., called Something True. Given the fact that the song was released after the much-purported "blowing out" of his vocal chords in 1974, I actually think in the original recording the listener can find one of Harry Nilsson's best vocal performances. In my deconstruction of the song, bringing it down to just voice and keyboard (orchestras are expensive, and can't fit into my living room), I hope I reveal the level of craft -- both lyrically and melodically -- that Nilsson brought to even his most straight-forward chord progressions. Harry Nilsson belongs to a small stable of songwriters whose work rarely fatigues my ears. His best songs (and there are a lot of great ones) remain eternally fresh. Nilsson had an almost cinematic approach to composing, and I think that is why I respond so strongly to his material. I sang Best Friend -- the theme song to the television show The Courtship Of Eddie's Father -- to myself maybe every day for five years, as a child. The memory of Nilsson's harmonies inhabited the electrical impulses of my brain at an early age, and I'm grateful. I also remember his version of the Badfinger song, Without You, being somewhat inescapable in the 1970s. When that song came on the radio, and even when it was just "sampled" in tv commercials selling 1970s pop hit compilations on vinyl (and 8-track tape!), that velvety voice stopped you where you stood. Diving Malta's Anchor Bay. The bay is also the location of the set for the 1980 film Popeye. The bay offers an easy shallow dive with plenty of marine life. There is also a cave in which it is possible to surface. The video was filmed using a Sony HVR-A1 in a Light & Motion housing. Lighting was either manually white-balanced natural light or 35W Halogen provided by a Greenforce FII Pro.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the long-running comic strip created by E.C. Segar (and less on the animated cartoons created by Max Fleischer, which were decidedly different in tone and approach), Popeye follows the sailor man with the mighty arms (played by Robin Williams in his first major film role) as he arrives in the seaside community of Sweethaven in search of his long-lost father. Popeye meets and quickly falls for the slender Olive Oyl (Shelley Duvall, in the role she was born to play), but Olive's hand has already been promised to the hulking Bluto (Paul Smith), of whom Olive can say little except, well, he's large. Eventually, Popeye and Olive are brought together by Swee' Pea (Wesley Ivan Hurt), an adorable foundling, and Popeye finally meets his dad, Poopdeck Pappy (Ray Walston). Director Robert Altman in no way tempered his trademark style for this big-budget family opus, crowding the screen with a variety of characters and allowing his cast to overlap as much dialogue as they want.

I sang Best Friend -- the theme song to the television show The Courtship Of Eddie's Father -- to myself maybe every day for five years, as a child. The memory of Nilsson's harmonies inhabited the electrical impulses of my brain at an early age, and I'm grateful.
I also remember his version of the Badfinger song, Without You, being somewhat inescapable in the 1970s. When that song came on the radio, and even when it was just "sampled" in tv commercials selling 1970s pop hit compilations on vinyl (and 8-track tape!), that velvety voice stopped you where you stood. It was that powerful.
I didn't have access to Nilsson's musical oeuvre though until I was an adult, when I purchased an RCA cd compilation in 1988. I was so taken by Nilsson's whiskey-soaked, wry version of Song Of The South's Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah on Hal Wilner's Disney project from 1988, Stay Awake, that I needed to delve deeper.
I'm glad I did. I felt that an entire generation (my generation) had been deprived of the incredible work Harry Nilsson had accomplished in a 13 to 15-year period. Until the 1990s, much of it was unavailable on cd.
The density and quality of Nilsson's work can not be understated. As much as he was famous for two interpretations of other composer's songs (Fred Neil's Everybody's Talkin' and Badfinger's Without You, covered as well with much success by Mariah Carey, but following Harry and Richard Perry's arrangement blueprint), Harry was considered to be a songwriter's songwriter. Meaning, this cat could write a tune.
So many of his songs could be considered standards: This Could Be The Night (the infamous song he co-wrote with Phil Spector), Cuddly Toy (given to the Monkees), One (given to Three Dog Night, although interpreted very well by Aimee Mann), Without Her (not the same song as Without You!), Gotta Get Up, Coconut, Jump Into The Fire, 1941, The Moonbeam Song, Remember (Christmas), Think About Your Troubles, Me And My Arrow, Don't Forget Me (interpreted most effectively by Marianne Faithfull)... I could go on and on. And on. Really.
So many filmmakers and music supervisors for film and television are re-discovering Nilsson as well. P.T. Anderson reminded us of the greatness of Harry's song He Needs Me, written for the ill-fated Robert Altman film from 1980, Popeye, when he used it as a centrepiece in his film Punch Drunk Love (2002). Intelligent cinematic pop band Clare And The Reasons have been touring internationally with the legendary Van Dyke Parks, covering this song, exposing its greatness to a whole new audience.
Much has been written about Nilsson's excesses, and it is unfortunate that the man passed away at such an early age (at 52 in 1994), but I choose to celebrate the work he left behind for us to enjoy.
The one song I've always thought was an undiscovered treat, is the 1976 chestnut, written with his old friend, arranger/composer Perry Botkin Jr., called Something True. Given the fact that the song was released after the much-purported "blowing out" of his vocal chords in 1974, I actually think in the original recording the listener can find one of Harry Nilsson's best vocal performances. In my deconstruction of the song, bringing it down to just voice and keyboard (orchestras are expensive, and can't fit into my living room), I hope I reveal the level of craft -- both lyrically and melodically -- that Nilsson brought to even his most straight-forward chord progressions.
Harry Nilsson belongs to a small stable of songwriters whose work rarely fatigues my ears. His best songs (and there are a lot of great ones) remain eternally fresh. Nilsson had an almost cinematic approach to composing, and I think that is why I respond so strongly to his material.

Narrator’s Script with Notes
Sixty years ago, in the summer of 1955, over 200 people met at City Island Recreation Center for worship.
Lee Nichols preached and Norman Iauch led the singing.
Nichols had been pastor of First Baptist Church for 14 years,
but controversy had split the church and ousted Nichols.
Now there was a new beginning and it was grand.
(Sunday June 19, 1955)
The Halifax Herald reported the second Sunday drew 230 for Sunday School,
some of whom met in the bleachers of City Island Ball Park.
Six hundred gathered for worship in the main hall.
In the afternoon, there was a fellowship dinner on the riverfront lawn at Norman Iauch’s [pronounced YAW’s] followed by a baptism in the Halifax River.
That first summer, they even held a Vacation Bible School with 104 children at Sunnyland Park.
In a month, the new congregation had leased and cleaned up the old McFarland’s Furniture building on the north east corner of International Speedway and US1 where Popeye’s Chicken is today. It would be home for three years.

In eighteen months, the church had grown to over 500 members.
They purchased land on Fairview and arranged a $70,000 loan for construction of the first sanctuary.
With time running out on their three year lease of the old furniture warehouse,
the whole congregation pitched in and built the new building in 100 days.

Lee Nichols, spent by the enormous effort to organize and build, retired from the pastorate the next summer. (1959, May 10) (Nichols died in 1975).
Central turned to Hal Marchman, a young pastor in Kentucky.
Hal had come to know Lee Nichols and the people at First Baptist during his student years at Stetson in the late 1940’s.
On Central’s first anniversary in 1956, Hal had preached the two-week revival.
When Hal came in the summer of 1959 (August 2), the formation of Central as a different kind of Baptist Church began to take shape.
Hal was a different kind of pastor. He had been a submariner in the World War II and was a recovering alcoholic.
Because of alcoholism, Hal developed a compassion for those who were suffering in similar ways. He often brought home folks who needed an opportunity to get sober, or he would appear before the judge and argue on their behalf for a second chance.
In that period, Hal often connected with troubled teens, and he would ask the courts to allow him to take problem kids out to the camp which the church purchased in 1961. At the camp, many lives were transformed.
People who had been helped by Hal, or those who had captured a vision of Hal's love, soon began to ask if they could come to church at Central.

As the church grew, the education building was added early in 1965
along with a second Sunday morning services to ease crowding.

When Norman Iauch’s [YAW’s] health declined two years later,
Betty Edwards was called to be choir director but Norman continued to lead the congregational singing for years.
(1970)
In the 1970’s the formation of many of Central's ministry initiatives came from Hal’s sense of compassion and brotherhood with men and women who much of society had given up on.
Hal Marchman, Judge Leon Stewart and other recovering alcoholics from the community, launched the Halifax Area Center for Alcohol Prevention, now known as the Stewart-Marchman Treatment Center-ACT.
After several short-term associates, Doug Harrell, a recent graduate of Southern Seminary, came to help Hal in 1972.
Doug’s role was to involved youth, hospital ministry, camp, and occasional preaching.
He had to sharpen his pastoral skills quickly because Hal was away on vacation or out with back problems for five of Doug’s first six months.
Before the end of the decade,
• the church created Central Manor, with 154 apartments for seniors;
• added Dip Parker to the staff as Central’s first full-time counselor (1977);
• and launched A Child’s Place, an innovate daycare center eventually reaching 225 children with a staff of 30.

In the decade of the 1980’s John Nichol became associate pastor alongside Doug and Hal.
The Central Baptist Seniors organized
and the Jubilees began singing.
After 13 ½ years of service, Doug answered a call to the pastorate at Southside Baptist in Sarasota. (October 6, 1985 Doug’s last Sunday, Returned August 12, 1990).
Central Baptist Church continued to grow, made up of recovering alcoholics, divorcees, and seniors who lived at the Manor.

Narrator’s Script with Notes
Sixty years ago, in the summer of 1955, over 200 people met at City Island Recreation Center for worship.
Lee Nichols preached and Norman Iauch led the singing.
Nichols had been pastor of First Baptist Church for 14 years,
but controversy had split the church and ousted Nichols.
Now there was a new beginning and it was grand.
(Sunday June 19, 1955)
The Halifax Herald reported the second Sunday drew 230 for Sunday School,
some of whom met in the bleachers of City Island Ball Park.
Six hundred gathered for worship in the main hall.
In the afternoon, there was a fellowship dinner on the riverfront lawn at Norman Iauch’s [pronounced YAW’s] followed by a baptism in the Halifax River.
That first summer, they even held a Vacation Bible School with 104 children at Sunnyland Park.
In a month, the new congregation had leased and cleaned up the old McFarland’s Furniture building on the north east corner of International Speedway and US1 where Popeye’s Chicken is today. It would be home for three years.

In eighteen months, the church had grown to over 500 members.
They purchased land on Fairview and arranged a $70,000 loan for construction of the first sanctuary.
With time running out on their three year lease of the old furniture warehouse,
the whole congregation pitched in and built the new building in 100 days.

Lee Nichols, spent by the enormous effort to organize and build, retired from the pastorate the next summer. (1959, May 10) (Nichols died in 1975).
Central turned to Hal Marchman, a young pastor in Kentucky.
Hal had come to know Lee Nichols and the people at First Baptist during his student years at Stetson in the late 1940’s.
On Central’s first anniversary in 1956, Hal had preached the two-week revival.
When Hal came in the summer of 1959 (August 2), the formation of Central as a different kind of Baptist Church began to take shape.
Hal was a different kind of pastor. He had been a submariner in the World War II and was a recovering alcoholic.
Because of alcoholism, Hal developed a compassion for those who were suffering in similar ways. He often brought home folks who needed an opportunity to get sober, or he would appear before the judge and argue on their behalf for a second chance.
In that period, Hal often connected with troubled teens, and he would ask the courts to allow him to take problem kids out to the camp which the church purchased in 1961. At the camp, many lives were transformed.
People who had been helped by Hal, or those who had captured a vision of Hal's love, soon began to ask if they could come to church at Central.

As the church grew, the education building was added early in 1965
along with a second Sunday morning services to ease crowding.

When Norman Iauch’s [YAW’s] health declined two years later,
Betty Edwards was called to be choir director but Norman continued to lead the congregational singing for years.
(1970)
In the 1970’s the formation of many of Central's ministry initiatives came from Hal’s sense of compassion and brotherhood with men and women who much of society had given up on.
Hal Marchman, Judge Leon Stewart and other recovering alcoholics from the community, launched the Halifax Area Center for Alcohol Prevention, now known as the Stewart-Marchman Treatment Center-ACT.
After several short-term associates, Doug Harrell, a recent graduate of Southern Seminary, came to help Hal in 1972.
Doug’s role was to involved youth, hospital ministry, camp, and occasional preaching.
He had to sharpen his pastoral skills quickly because Hal was away on vacation or out with back problems for five of Doug’s first six months.
Before the end of the decade,
• the church created Central Manor, with 154 apartments for seniors;
• added Dip Parker to the staff as Central’s first full-time counselor (1977);
• and launched A Child’s Place, an innovate daycare center eventually reaching 225 children with a staff of 30.

In the decade of the 1980’s John Nichol became associate pastor alongside Doug and Hal.
The Central Baptist Seniors organized
and the Jubilees began singing.
After 13 ½ years of service, Doug answered a call to the pastorate at Southside Baptist in Sarasota. (October 6, 1985 Doug’s last Sunday, Returned August 12, 1990).
Central Baptist Church continued to grow, made up of recovering alcoholics, divorcees, and seniors who lived at the Manor.

Sa dernière apparition était a la Biennale de Venise, enveloppant l'architecture d'un palazzo fluvial. On la redécouvre cette fois recouvrant la façade de l'Hôtel de Ville d'Ivry-sur-Seine.
L’installation propose de découvrir, au travers d’une grande photo tirée sur bâche, le décor d’un village.
S’agit-il d’un village entier déserté par sa population? Rien n’est très sûr.
Ce sont en fait les reliques d’un décor construit à Malte (1980) pour le tournage du film Popeye de Robert Altman, laissé en plan, et en l’état, depuis plus de vingt ans. Alexandre Perigot exhume ici cet improbable paysage comme pour dresser un bilan tragique de la situation: tout ça pour ça...
Alexandre Perigot travaille à débusquer les signes de la spectacularisation de notre société. Le territoire de ses œuvres se situe dans la zone de turbulences à l’interface de l’espace social et de la constitution du moi singulier. Vigilant à la réalité du monde et à ses multiples manifestations dans notre société, il ne cesse d’être préoccupé par les mécanismes illusoires d’identification : comment se laisse t-on séduire par l’apparence, en particulier celle qui façonne l’image de la célébrité . Le travail d’A. Perigot propose une désillusion par rapport à l'illusion en dévoilant l'arrière du décor et aboutit une réflexion sur le cinéma et sur la manière dont ses codes conditionnent la vie quotidienne...
