Pedro Reyes & Carla Fernández: Hecho en México | Art21 "Extended Play"
Episode #241: Artist Pedro Reyes and fashion designer Carla Fernández share how they met and discuss their marriage, as well as their mutual love of Mexican craft and design. Though Fernández designs high-end fashion and Reyes is known for his metal and stone sculptures, they both collaborate with artisans to produce their work. “When I started making clothing, I had two choices,” says Fernández. “One was to copy the things that the [indigenous] communities make, …or work together with the communities.”
The design of the couple's home—an ever-evolving project—is also focused on the handmade. Their bathroom appears both ancient and futurist through the use of cast concrete and carved volcanic stone, and everything from the floor to the furniture was handcrafted. "It makes it in a way, per...

In Residence: Pedro Reyes & Carla Fernández
The Mexico City home of artist Pedro Reyes and fashion designer Carla Fernández is a continually adapting architectural project. Only built in the 1980s, none of the original structure remains. Coarse concrete walls divide the sprawling space into discrete sections that, over the years, has evolved to meet both the demands of a working atelier and comfort of a family home.
The daunting brutalism of the space is offset by Fernández’s vibrant textiles and Reyes’ sculptural work. A larger than life-sized sculpture of Vladimir Lenin’s head lies in repose, a wooden “hand chair” with articulating fingers sits in the corner, and shovels cast from melted down weapons hang on a wall. Moving from the handmade to the natural, the master bathroom resembles an ancient geological site with its carved v...

"It makes it in a way, personal, that you know who is making your house,” explains Fernández, “you know who you're taking care of, or who's taking care of you.” Fernández also discusses the importance of preserving Mexico’s rich cultural heritage against the homogenizing forces of globalization.
Pedro Reyes designs ongoing projects that propose playful solutions to social problems. From turning guns into musical instruments, to hosting a People’s United Nations to address pressing concerns, to offering ecologically-friendly grasshopper burgers from a food cart, Reyes transforms existing problems into ideas for a better world. In the artist’s hands, complex subjects like political and economic philosophies are reframed in ways that are easy to understand, such as a puppet play featuring Karl Marx and Adam Smith fighting over how to share cookies. When encountering a project by the artist, viewers are often enlisted as participants, whether through one-on-one conversations, therapeutic acts, or as creators of objects in collaborative workshops.

Moving from the handmade to the natural, the master bathroom resembles an ancient geological site with its carved volcanic stone basin and roughly-hewn rockpool bathtub. Around the home lightwells of brilliant yellow interrupts the grey of the concrete, while large green cacti and palms beckon a sense of the outdoors.
Their Coyoacán home is more than just a living space but a reflection of their commitment to working with the community. Most of the cement work was completed in-house with local craftspeople and the workshop is continually awash with neighborhood artisans working on Reyes’ new projects.
Reyes’ opus extends far beyond material arts and sculpture work. Most notably his People’s United Nations project (stylized as “pUN”) invited 193 volunteers to find resolutions to real and imagined geopolitical issues using psychology and theatre. Meanwhile Fernández’s eponymous fashion label works alongside indigenous communities in order to promote traditional weaving techniques and patterns for global audiences. For these efforts in 2018 both Fernández and Reyes were awarded the Design Miami Visionary Award which recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the field of design and had a tangible impact on their communities. The couple’s work, just like their cavernous home, continues to be a testament to the rewards of local collaboration and celebration of Mexico’s rich heritage.

In an interview at What Design Can Do 2013, Pedro Reyes spoke about generating group activities and bringing people together.
Mexican artist and designer Pedro Reyes is interested in how an object is able to trigger an activity and how an activity can result in an object. At the 2013 What Design Can Do conference he elaborated on a few of his projects that bridge the gap between art and psychology.
Currently Reyes is working on a project, which transforms weapons into musical instruments. "Weapons produce fear and suffering in the world and music does the exact opposite", says Reyes. His project seeks to look past the physical transformation and explore the psychological impact and social effect on people who have suffered violence and distress due to weapons.
If we are going to fight back violence, we have to start with art, says Reyes.
From violins to flutes and drums, Reyes extracts sounds from various pieces of metal and creates an orchestra of instruments.
Looking at social upliftment in a playful and metaphoric way, Reyes' Sanatorium project creates a space where people are able to discuss their lives through a game. People are able to have two or three sessions depending on their problem where they partake in a game in order to view their problem in a different light.
My projects combine games involving interaction, psychology and sculpture with a therapeutic aim and outcome, says Reyes.
He further spoke about his Museum of Hypothetical Lifetimes, which encourages people to become curators and exhibition designers for their own lives. "I believe this project opens a space for human connection", says Reyes.
