NEW The Ministry of Defence was criticised last night for leaving Britain vulnerable to attack due to a series of equipment blunders. Rear Admiral Chris Parry described the navy's Type 45 destroyers (top right), which cost £1billion each, as sounding like 'a box of spanners' underwater, meaning they can be heard 100 miles away by Russian submarines. It also emerged that the Ajax tank (bottom left) is too big to be transported by an A400m aircraft (bottom right) without being dismantled and potential new P-8 drones (top left) are vulnerable to cyber-attacks. Inset: The MoD spent £1.2bn on drones 12 years ago which have not been used due to faults.
A lunar eclipse is forecast to appear, casting a mysterious shadow across the moon. And just a few hours later, Comet 45P - the New Year comet - will make its closest approach to the Earth.

Watch the incredible moment a cliff collapses above a massive 'firehose of lava' flowing from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano into the sea
A section of sea cliff above a massive 'firehose' lava flow on Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano has collapsed and splashed into the ocean as tourists and geologists watched. A large crack in the section of cliff above the gushing molten lava stream gave way Thursday afternoon as scientists stood just yards away. Geologists with Hawaii Volcano Observatory were at the site to monitor the crack when it collapsed, and managed to capture the scene on video.
Can you spot the 1.8-metre snake? Photograph posted online of carpet python wrapped around a pot plant baffles the internet
Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7 posted the image of six pot plants on its Facebook page on Friday - the question is can you spot which one has a snake hiding in it? It seems hard to fathom but one of the plants in the picture has a 1.8m carpet python wrapped around it. All you have to do is work out exactly where the resting reptile could be.

The incredible image of a psychedelic supernova: Researchers simulate superluminous stellar explosion in 2D
In a move that sounds like something out of a sci-fi comic, astrophysicists are conducting the first 2D simulations of superluminous supernovae using supercomputers. These massive stellar explosions shine up to 100 times brighter than normal supernovae, and were only first spotted in the last decade. Researchers say the effort will help improve our understanding of the physical conditions that give rise to these ultra-bright objects.
Russia reveals massive 'groundskimmer' cargo plane to carry heavy loads that will fly just 10 FEET above the ground and sea
Russian researchers have revealed a radical new cargo plane that could radically change the way goods are shipped around the globe. The new 'groundskimmer' is a huge craft capable of carrying 500 tonnes of cargo in a single trip. To do this, is uses an effect known as ground effect to trap a cushion of air underneath its giant wing. It would be loaded with containers in compartments inside a wing and loaded via flap doors (inset).
The strange 'ice cream swirls' at the Martian north pole: ESA reveals incredible images of giant troughs on the red planet
Mars Express has revealed the Red Planet’s north polar ice cap and its distinctive dark spiralling troughs in unprecedented detail. The giant troughs are caused by freezing and melting carbon dioxide, and get their distinctive shape from spiralling winds similar to hurricanes on earth. The mosaic was generated from 32 individual orbit ‘strips’ captured between 2004 and 2010, and covers an area of around a million square kilometres.
The death of a sun: Hubble captures the moment a star dies in the 'Rotten Egg' nebula
The Hubble Space Telescope has captured the death of a sun-like star, a striking nebula known as the ‘Rotten Egg.’ In the image, the star is seen shooting its outer layers of gas and dust into space as it transforms from a red giant to a planetary nebula. As the process happens rapidly, ‘within just the blink of an eye,’ the astronomers say catching a star in this phase of evolution is extremely rare.

The BBC's innovative 'Spy in the Wild' series ends tonight with a special episode on how they made the show's realistic fake animal cameras. Spy in the Wild deployed over 30 ultra-realistic animatronic Spy Creatures to go undercover in the animal world. The episode airs in the UK tonight at 7.30pm. Pictured is the Spy Pup robot.
Signs of stray black hole discovered in the Milky Way as researchers reveal new method to search for the elusive objects
It’s thought that there may be as many as 100 million to 1 billion black holes in the Milky Way – but, as light can’t escape from their confines, these objects are extremely difficult to spot. Now, researchers have revealed a new method that could transform the search for black holes. By analyzing the motion in an enigmatic gas cloud, the team discovered signs of a hidden black hole in our galaxy, and they say the method could be used to find others.
Were ancient Egyptian scribes inspired by BABOONS? 3,000-year-old tomb of 'renowned' Royal artist was decorated with carvings of apes
Archaeologists have discovered a new tomb in Thebes, Egypt, belonging to a man described as a 'true renowned scribe', which was intricately decorated with carvings of baboons (main picture). They believe the baboons were the Royal scribe's muse, which is why they have taken pride of place in his tomb. Elsewhere in the tomb were colourful decorations depicting the scribe himself and his wife (inset top left). The hidden tomb was discovered when archaeologists from Waseda University were clearing rubble in the necropolis of Thebes, close to modern day Luxor.
Vincent van BOT: Pocket-sized doodling robot draws almost 1,000 pre-sales in just 30 hours
The Line-us robot (main picture) was launched on Kickstarter by London-based designers and was fully-funded in just 30 hours. This mini robot is a USB-powered arm that connects to an app on smart phones, computers and tablets. Users can create their own sketches on screen or trace around photos on their device (top left) and the robot, called Line-up will recreate the image using pen and paper. The app also allows sketches to be sent to friends who also have the robot.
VR hack creates true 'mixed reality': Developers design app that combines HTC Vive and HoloLens to draw objects mid-air
A developer has designed a method that uses a HTC Vive headset and a Microsoft HoloLens headset to create a true 'mixed reality'. Drew Gottlieb designed a new app called HoloViveObserver that lets multiple people see the same virtual world while wearing the headsets. Players have the ability to collaborate using the same app, allowing them to build objects that hover in the air together.
