Wow, I remember looking for a dinosaur doc & this being the only find. Extremely disappointing and surprising

Looking for more documentaries about murderers or just interesting crimes. There's a lot, but many of them have bad ratings. I'd just like to hear actual recommendations. My favorites so far include: Dear Zachery, Jinx, Making a Murderer, The Imposter, and The Fear of 13. Welcome to Netflix, HBO, Hulu, and Youtube.

[–]-Comrade_Question- 7 points8 points  (2 children)

There is a Documentary Minisieries called The Staircase which is pretty nice, and I believe is fully available on YouTube.

There is also the first season of the Podcast Serial, which is pretty phenomenal if you are willing to accept other types of media.

But my favorite documentary of this genre lately has been OJ Made in America (Not to be confused with the FX drama). It is so engrossing, nuanced and gut wrenching, even if you are a bit jaded of the story, the director brings such compelling approach, it is absolutely absorbing. On the same quality levels, (if not better than) The Jinx and Making a Murderer.

[–]jazz4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second The Staircase, amazing doc. Definitely up there with Jinx and Making a Murder for engrossment value.

[–]kvark27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, the Staircase is great. Another series you would love would be the West Memphis Three. There are multiple documentaries that you need to watch in order. Also, on Netflix, Who Took Johnny. I was cringing and on the edge of my seat.

Check out Jonestown: The Life & Death Of Peoples Temple

Here's the synopsis: "Filmmaker Stanley Nelson charts the rise and fall of Peoples Temple founder Jim Jones, whose followers drank poisoned punch at their South American commune in 1978. Using archival film footage and interviews with the few survivors, Nelson recounts the origins of the church's formation and its charismatic leader, and the events that led up to their doomsday in Guyana."

It's a very chilling account of what was the largest murder/suicide of American citizens up until Sept 11 took place

My friend Rockefeller is on Netflix

[–]curlywurlyjess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been looking since it's release date for the documentary Dancer (2016) about Sergei Polunin, the bad boy of ballet. Still itching to watch it so bad.

Looking for a good documentary of what became of the Ottoman ruling family after the end of the Ottoman Empire.

[–]JuneSunday 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I see a few have been posted in the past, but I'd like opinions on which is a good documentary about the Russian Revolution/Bolsheviks that isn't heavily biased (one way or the other).

I'm also interested in the Greek Financial Crisis, if anything exists looking back.

[–]DenialFlash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking for Chechen War documentaries, any recommendations?

[–]spd69 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Looking for documentaries about middle east which shows how it used to be before war, during war, iraq/afghan war, before isis, sunnis vs shia'ite conflict etc. I recently watched frontline documentary and was surprised how different the places and the people were(especially syrians) compared to what they show in news channels.

I am looking for documentaries about the polynesian culture. That is: Traditional polynesian culture and - maybe - too on how it changed after James Cook. Would love stuff about their mythology, too. And in general: Documentaries about polynesia! Any good suggestions are welcome!

There are laughs, tears and wild ideas as the tiny world onboard Haunui waka serves up countless situations to challenge their comfort zones.

Requesting links for documentaries with English subtitles, since I'm not a native speaker, and mostly due to accents I lose some of the dialouge without it. Thank you.

[–]cojoco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such documentaries are welcome here, and it would be great if submitters could include "[CC]" in the title to advise people of the fact.

[–]Fashion_Dinosaur 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Hello, can anybody recommend me some goofy documentaries? When I say 'goofy' I mean whether the premise is goofy, or there are some zany characters in a serious documentary you've seen.

Thank you

[–]half_truths_at_best 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's sort of difficult to answer this, since 'zany' and 'goofy' are pretty subjective. However, here are a couple of docs that follow odd characters;

  • Invention of Dr Nakamats this is a pretty decent documentary about an old Japanese inventor. He is very odd (as are many of the ~3000 inventions he'd come up with), but it's an interesting little doc.

  • American Movie this brilliant doc follows two guys as they try to make a no-budget horror film. They guys are certainly odd, but they're also really nice and clearly very pationate about their art so this doc manages to be funny, heart-warming and aspiring all at the same time. Think of it, perhaps as the antidote to Overnight.

Out of interest, what do you mean when you say a documentary where 'the premise is goofy'? Do you mean the subject matter, or the way that the doc has been made? In terms of docs where the subject matter is goofy, I'd probably include those wierd crazy conspiracy docs that you get on Netflix/Amazon Instant but I suppose whether you find those mad or insightful is simply a matter of opinion, so I can't really speak for anyone else.

  • The only example that really springs to mind for strange film structure though is Orson Welles' amazing F For Fake. Its about art forgery, and he plays with the medium of film itself to present the doc in a really interesting way. In that sense I suppose it's kinda playful, but I'm not sure I'd call it 'goofy'.

  • I see that Guy Maddin's My Winnipeg is listed on IMDB as a doc (or at least partially) so if that's true, then I'd definitely include that also. It's sort of a mix of his personal memories & (true?) stories about where he grew up. It wasn't really my cup of tea, but it might be of interest.

"Tales from the Organ Trade" is a well done HBO doc on the subject. If you can't find it I can upload it from my collection and link it.

I'm looking for a documentary on how views of gay men have evolved. Or at least something that talks about romans castrating men etc.

[–]MrADHD 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm looking for a real documentary of serious science on Animal Intelligence, ie of cognition.

Most doc's (really their tv shows) I seem to come across have a kitschy feel. I want something more science-y with more facts and less goofy music and "the viewer is an old dope" feel.

[–]Chris_in_Lijiang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try a few shows that feature Temple Grandin for an interesting perspective on this subject.

[–]luisro92 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Any documentaries that bursted your bubble? For me, it was, "Why beauty matters" by Roger Scruton. It definitely changed how I view the world as an artist. And so was "Food inc" it forever changed my diet.

[–]Chris_in_Lijiang 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The films of Geoff Lawton completely changed the way I look at the world around me. So much so that I flew half way around the world to attend one of his PDC course. If you enjoyed Food Inc, I wouldst that these films would be a natural progression for you.

Harvesting Water the Permaculture Way (2007)
Establishing a Food Forest (2008)

[–]luisro92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The titles alone sound amazing, haha, thank you!

[–]didcotton 0 points1 point  (1 child)

hold on----you're telling me a bunch of bricks on the floor or a coat hanging on a chair isn't art? get outta here.

and per your request---anything by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Malone_%28independent_filmmaker%29

or by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Curtis

or by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Hughes_%28critic%29

[–]luisro92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it might seem like its obvious but the art world today really makes you feel like it isn't. Before watching the documentary I felt like I just had an opinion, and after watching I understood why I felt how I did about those things.

And thank you I'll check them out. Adam Curtis The century of self is one of my favorites as well and it did have that bubble burst effect on me.

[–]dubfonik 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I heard about a doc which was based on how easy it is to bend statistics/test results in your favour to get an outcome that you want. does anybody know it? sorry I don't have any more info than that

[–]DalaiLama_of_Croatia 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Im looking for documentaries about Scientology. All I know about them is that they are wierd cult. I would like to know more because they sound so mysterious and intimidating.

[–]bennnrenshaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

louis theroux's scientology doc is v good

[–]-Comrade_Question- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the most comprehensive Scientology doc I've seen on the matter is 'Going Clear'.

As a companion piece I would recommend the A&E doc series with Leah Remini (Episodes get linked on Reddit on a weekly basis). While I do have to warn you that the show has a more TV-like aesthetic, the first-person accounts are chilling, in-depth, and quite informative.

I am looking for documentaries on school and teachers. Particularly rough schools, as I am teaching in one right now by myself. I would like to see some examples of teachers dealing with rough/troublemaker children in their classes. Could be international and should be available online. Thanks!

[–]Alex_vValour 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Looking for documentaries about tank battles. More specifically Patton vs Romel

[–]liorcolina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is a typical request but I vaguely remember a documentary by David Attenboruogh called Killer Whale: Killer Culture or something along those terms and I really liked it, yet now as I search I can't seem to find it anywhere at all. Is there anyway you guys can help me find a version I can watch or download? If I remeber correctly it was originally broadcasted on the Discovery Channel. Thanks!

[–]Obelisk_Twilight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello

I'm looking for documentaries that are particularly similar to WWII from Space.

This documentary involves lots of detailed CGI including globe, grids, terrains, framework/blueprints(?), legends, etc, and a very interesting perspective from space.

Thanks

[–]half_truths_at_best 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are there any good documentaries about espionage? Anything from the modern day to older contexts (e.g. the cold war or even older stuff like the Cupler Ring).

[–]lagerea 1 point2 points  (2 children)

This is a long shot but numerous google searches of left me blank.

In late 2012 early 2013 there was a documentary on netflix about an American(white) guru/motivational speaker. It's kind of a micro story of his life with a bunch of clips of his seminars and of course modern stuff with people talking about him with praise and criticism. I can't remember the name of the doc or his name and it's killing me since it was one of the most insightful documentaries I had ever seen. Any help would be appreciated.

[–]strengthofstrings 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Maybe Ram Dass - Fierce Grace? I know of a couple others fitting that description, but they came out more recently than 2012/13.

[–]lagerea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, that's not the one. One scene I remember in the documentary was when during one of his talks he told his audience they couldn't use the restroom for the whole 8 hours and then remarked at the end how they had all forgotten and that they didn't know they had the will power to control such a thing.

What happened to Laura Poitras' documentary about Assange?

Like CitizenFour, Risk was screened at a film festival before public release. However, it only took a couple months between the film festival and the theater release for CitizenFour.

Risk was screened at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival in April of 2016. However, over half a year later, the film is still not in theaters and there have been no public announcements. What happened to Risk?

[–]dcantagallo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It appears as if Laura Poitras is updating it to include recent events and looking at a Spring 2017 release.

I'm looking for a documentary that's about Japanese katana making. It was on reddit here a while ago, however there are around 4 or 5 floating around youtube. So far I have looked at all the ones on reddit threads but none of them are the one im looking for, the one im looking for features an apprentice, it is also ust him and the apprentice. However I can't seem to find it.

Hello guys, i recently started watching a docu about the silician mafia. I can't find it in my history anymore but in the first minutes they talk about a tough mafioso where everyone was afraid of. I remember they said that while In prison when he needed a telephone call he skipped the line and nobody dared to say a word. After a while he was known on the streets as crazy even nicknaming him something like that. His own plan was to become the godfather of different mafias... Does anyone know what I am looking for? Thanks.

Breaking the Code: Biography of Alan Turing (Derek Jacobi, BBC, 1996) [90:47]

A biography of the English mathematician Alan Turing, who was one of the inventors of the digital computer and one of the key figures in the breaking of the Enigma code, used by the Germans to send secret orders to their U-boats in World War II. Turing was also a homosexual in Britain at a time when this was illegal, besides being a security risk.

Thanks in advance

(Specific) I'm looking for a Doc I've seen twice but can't find again. It's about a younger guy, with glasses, who plays his accordion in a subway (or tube or metro). It's two defining features, for me, is that it's completely in B&W and the guy being filmed not only plays the accordion but also straps some type of bells to his feet where he stomps or shakes them to go with the music. I think his friend is doing the doc.

I've hunted my Youtube history's and can't find it so I don't know where I found it. please help and thank you.

I need a suggestion for a documentary on the first crusade.

[–]lost329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extra Credit, the youtube channel did four episodes on the first crusade. Though it isn't much a documentary as oppose to a telling of a story. Al Jazeera English - The Crusades, An Arab Perspective is fair in the beginning but becomes full blown propaganda by the fourth series.

Is there a good place to watch the old PBS catalogue from the UK? I know there's a lot on youtube but I particularly love Ken Burns' stuff and it keeps being taken down from there and it's the same on Netflix too, for some reason.

Ken Burns is like the Paul McCartney of documentarians, you virtually gotta buy like 50 hours of his box sets.

does anyone know where I can watch/download 'The Good American' documentary about the NSA and 9/11? Thanks

[–]lukerbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I'm trying to find a documentary that I've seen several times over the past few years (maybe even as far back as 10 years) but can't remember the name or find it anywhere.

It's set somewhere in Asia (in the mountains/jungle or whatever) I think and it tells the story of a father and his family. The father has an instrument (like a small guitar) that has been passed down through the family for generations. He tries to pass it on to his children (daughters inbeleive) but they are not interested.

Meanwhile, locals in a nearby village bully the man/family and threaten them. At one point they slash the throat of a goat on his property as a threat or something.

One scene shows the father weeping because paired with the ridicule he receives and the disinterest of his children, he feels powerless and that he has let down his ancestors.

If anyone could help me find it I'd be most greatful.

I am looking for a documentary that I saw on youtube about a month ago. It was a documentary about how politics and the economy in the USA/world was getting unpredictable. It was a few hours long. I believe it came out before Trump was elected, but it was kind of promoted as a "how Trump got to power" kind of film. The documentary talked about the financialization of the US economy. I actually found out about it from this sub but I can't find it now..... please help!

Street Wise was a documentary that received a lot of criticism for it's direction and is considered a classic.

Bad/Good direction boils down to opinion. What is considered good direction for some might seem terrible for others.

Some directors get amazing subjects and have decent direction but drop that ball in execution. "Zoo" is a good example.

Some of the best documentaries are about what some would consider extremely mundane topics like "I Like Killing Flies" yet you can't look away.

If you want to direct a good doc, particularly in the digital age, you should shoot a high ratio of footage taken to footage used. If you have 30 hours of footage it is easy to find a great story within that footage rather then try and force the story with what you have.

Do yourself a favor and watch THIS documentary. It's talks to some of the best documentary directors of our time. It proves that there are as many ways to make a documentary as there are directors.

Dear Zachary fits this description to a T, IMO.

NGOs - There was a very good documentary a few years back exposing the hypocrisy of a lot of NGOs - looking at their budgets and salaries as compared to the benefits they actually brought communities they purported to help, and in particular the economic cost to local businesses of having NGOs undercut local businesses with their funded projects. Can't remember the exact name of it, but it was something like "The Business of NGOs". Ring a bell?

Poverty, Inc. is a good doc on that topic, specifically aid to African countries

Aha! I think that's the one I was looking for.

Thank you.

bit off topic---this is exactly why I donate to Americares rather than the Red Cross.

97% of Americares' donations goes to aid spending versus something like 80% for the American Red Cross.

Yes - Susan G Komen Foundation is perhaps the most notorious, along with the Clinton Foundation - both of these use up over 80% of the money they receive before anything is spent on their stated objectives. They are exceptionally brazen, but sadly, many names one implicitly trusts, like Mother Teresa & Salvation Army, are engaging in the same sort of deception, if not to the same degree.

Looking for documentaries that are not about issues but rather acknowledge the existence of a reality (if they exist).

Have you seen anything with Rupert Sheldrake? Even his TED talk could change the whole way that you perceive reality. After that, maybe check out Bruce Lipton and Robert Anton Wilson
