Jack Harold Paar (May 1, 1918 – January 27, 2004) was an American author, radio and television comedian and talk show host, best known for his stint as host of The Tonight Show from 1957 to 1962. Time magazine's obituary noted that: "His fans would remember him as the fellow who split talk show history into two eras: Before Paar and Below Paar."
Paar was born in Canton, Ohio in 1918, the son of Lillian M. and Howard Paar. He moved with his family to Jackson, Michigan, approximately 40 miles south of Lansing, as a child. As a child he had a stuttering problem which he conquered. He contracted tuberculosis when he was 14, and left school at 16.
He first worked near home as a radio announcer at WIBM in Jackson and later as a humorous disc jockey at Midwest stations, including WJR in Detroit, WIRE in Indianapolis, WGAR in Cleveland and WBEN in Buffalo. In his book P.S. Jack Paar, he recalled doing utility duty at WGAR in 1938 when Orson Welles broadcast his famous simulated alien invasion, The War of the Worlds over the CBS network (and affiliate WGAR). Attempting to calm possible panicked listeners, Paar announced, "The world is not coming to an end. Trust me. When have I ever lied to you?"
The Tonight Show is an American late-night talk show broadcast from the Rockefeller Center in New York City and airing on NBC since 1954. It is the world's longest-running talk show, and the longest running, regularly scheduled entertainment program in the United States. It is the third-longest-running show on NBC, after only the news-and-talk shows Today and Meet the Press.
Over the course of more than 60 years, The Tonight Show has undergone only minor title changes. It aired under the name Tonight for several of its early years, eventually settling on The Tonight Show after the seating of long-time host Johnny Carson in 1962. In later decades, network programmers, advertisers, and the show's announcers would refer to the show by including the name of the host; for example, it is currently announced as The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In 1957, the show briefly tried a more news-style format. It has otherwise remained a talk show throughout its run.
The Tonight Show began broadcasting in 1954. It has had six official hosts, beginning with Steve Allen (1954–57), followed by Jack Paar (1957–62), Johnny Carson (1962–92), Jay Leno (1992–2009, 2010–14), Conan O'Brien (2009–10), and Jimmy Fallon (2014–present). It has had several recurring guest hosts, a practice especially common during the Paar and Carson eras.
Judy Garland (June 10, 1922 – June 22, 1969), born Frances Ethel Gumm, was an American singer, actress, and vaudevillian. She was renowned for her contralto vocals and attained international stardom which continued throughout a career that spanned more than 40 years as an actress in musical and dramatic roles, as a recording artist, and on concert stages. Respected for her versatility, she received a Juvenile Academy Award and won a Golden Globe Award as well as a Special Tony Award. She was the first woman to win a Grammy for Album of the Year.
Garland was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the remake of A Star Is Born and for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 1961 film Judgment at Nuremberg. She remains the youngest recipient (at 39 years of age) of the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in the motion picture industry.
After appearing in vaudeville with her two older sisters, Garland was signed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a teenager. There, she made more than two dozen films, including nine with Mickey Rooney, and 1939's The Wizard of Oz. After 15 years, she was released from the studio and then gained new success through record-breaking concert appearances, including a return to acting, beginning with critically acclaimed performances.
The Paar is a river in Germany and a right tributary of the Danube. For several tens of kilometers it flows parallel to the Lech, at only a few km distance. Near Augsburg, the Paar leaves the Lech valley and turns north-east towards Ingolstadt. It flows into the Danube near Vohburg. Towns along the Paar include Egling, Mering, Aichach, Schrobenhausen and Manching.

This is complete audio of the infamous February 12, 1960 program when Jack Paar walked off the Tonight Show to protest the censoring of one of his jokes the previous night. You hear an NBC voiceover at the beginning defending the decision and hoping Jack will return eventually (he did five weeks later). Hugh Downs is left to soldier on with the regularly scheduled guests, Genevieve, Orson Bean and Shelley Berman.
Considered by many to be Judy Garland's finest hour on television, this episode of The Jack Paar Show, taped on December 2, 1962 (for broadcast on December 7, 1962) features Judy and her recent co-star, Robert Goulet. Judy is at the top of her game here, in looks, voice, and storytelling abilities. The Judy Garland Experience is proud to bring you the best quality version of this beloved performance known to exist. Donated to TJGE Library by Garland collector extraordinaire, Tom Garofalo, this same version has been requested by the Paley Center to be a part of their permanent collection, and The Judy Garland Experience is thrilled to bring this to people who don't have access to the television museum. Fuzzy pictured and incomplete versions of this show have been available to fans for years...
Senator John F. Kennedy appears on the Tonight Show with Jack Paar while campaigning for President, June 16, 1960. These clips are from a show about Jack Paar, and this is all they showed of JFK.
On November 29, 1986, Jack Paar, the host of The Tonight Show from 1957 to 1962, had an NBC Special after The Museum of Broadcasting (now the Paley Center) found some missing kinescopes containing some rare footage of Mr. Paar's classic programs. Some of the guests featured are John and Robert F. Kennedy, Richard M. Nixon, Judy Garland, Richard Burton, Robert Goulet, Barry Goldwater and Billy Graham, Bill Cosby, Liza Minelli, and The Beatles, which was their first taped appearance on American television.
Present are Randy (Jack's only child), Phyllis Diller, Betty White, Bob Newhart, Regis Philbin (via phone), Dick Cavett, Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas, Pat Sajak, Hugh Downs, and Ed McMahon.
Opening credits of the Jack Paar Show with commercials and one of Jonathan Winters Greatest skits, I had to cut out a little of his intro to fit it all.

Its too late
It's too late for tears
Cause you know tonight one thing is clear
I could sit at home and cry
Useless as it is
Or I can try to love again
I'll be too cool
Too cool for words
Too cool, to ever get hurt, too cool
It's a lesson I've learned from you
You've got to be (cool)
So long to yesterday
Goodbye is the price you pay
You think that I was the fool
But baby, you broke all the rules
Not too (cool)
I'm all right, I'll soon be better
Cause you know
Heart aches don't last forever
You went and left me cold
Searching for somebody new
But you'll come home
And when you do
I'll be, too cool
Too cool for words
Too cool, to ever get hurt, too cool
It's a lesson I learned from you
Got to be cool
Too cool
Too cool for words
Got to be cool
