Police chase 2016, Jackson, Michigan ******************************************* Jackson, Michigan, United States, August 16, 2016 - A preliminary examination for a man accused of fleeing police who were responding to a report of shots fired will continue in two weeks. Keith Mcleain, 33, returns before Jackson District Court Judge Darryl Mazur Sept. 13, after prosecution and defense attorneys agreed to adjourn the case Thursday, Sept. 1, after hearing testimony from only one Jackson police detective involved in the brief police chase that led to Mcleain's arrest Aug. 16. Mcleain is charged with one count of third-degree fleeing from police, one count of carrying a concealed weapon, two counts of obstructing police, one count of felony firearms and a misdemeanor count of altering or forging a document. After hearing testimony from Jackson Police Det. Gary Schuette, prosecuting and defense attorneys agreed to continue the at the later date to hear testimony from the lead detective in the case, Det. Brett Stiles, who was unavailable Thursday. Mcleain was arrested after a brief police chase following a shooting that occurred between persons in a green GMC Yukon and a silver Chevrolet Impala in the 300 block of Summit Avenue on Aug. 16. Schuette testified while he was on his way to the scene of the shooting, he witnessed a green GMC Yukon with several bullet holes in it traveling westbound on E. Washington Avenue. The vehicle made a sharp left turn into a parking lot at the corner of Washington Avenue and Cooper Street where he attempted to stop the vehicle, he said. The Yukon traveled around the building, through a grass lawn and was blocked in by fellow Jackson Police officers converging on the scene, he said. Schuette testified Mcleain talked to him after he was arrested and told him he was fleeing after being shot at by "his baby momma's new boyfriend." Police located a handgun laying on some woodchips under a bush along the route Mcleain took around the building. As it had recently rained, everything was wet except for the handgun, Schuette testified. Defense attorney Alfred Brandt argued there was nothing directly linking Mcleain to the weapon. "You don't know if the driver tossed it, a passenger tossed it or if it was just there," he said. "I assume the gun is in the crime lab and we may get it back this year or in 2017." Schuette said he lost sight of the vehicle for a brief moment when it went around the building and did not see a gun tossed from the vehicle during the pursuit. In the dash-camera video obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, it shows Jackson Police Officer Dean Schuette leaving the police department on E. Washington Avenue heading east towards the reported shooting. Schuette quickly turns the cruiser around upon hearing a suspect had fled into a nearby parking lot. He catches up with Det. Schuette and quickly blocks the exit of the parking lot. Officers ordered Mcleain to keep his hands visible and to exit the vehicle. Appearing somewhat confused of what is going on, he follows the officer commands and exits the vehicle peacefully. Police have been keeping close watch on Summit Avenue after the area experienced a rash of shootings one incident of which sent four individuals to the hospital, police said. Mcleain's preliminary examination will continue at 9 a.m., Sept. 13 in Mazur's courtroom. *******************************************
