CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS — The MIT Technology Review is questioning Donald Trump’s claim that his proposed border wall will cost $12 billion. According to MIT, the cost could be closer to $40 billion.
Trump initially proposed to build a wall along all 2,000 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border, but then revised it down to half of the border, with the rest of the border left obstructed by natural barriers such as mountains.
According to the MIT Technology Review, building a wall 50 feet tall with 10 feet extended underground, at a length of 1,000 miles, will require about 9.7 million cubic meters of concrete, which costs about $9 billion. Since Trump has promised the wall will be reinforced with steel, it will need about 2.3 billion kilograms of steel, which adds $4.6 billion to the cost. The addition of labour costs and other expenses brings the estimated cost to between $27 billion and $40 billion.
Bernstein Research previously calculated in July that a wall of 5 ft wide, 1 ft deep and 1,000 miles long would require a total of 7.1 million m3 of concrete at a cost of over $700 million. It would also require around 2.4 million tonnes of cement at a cost of around $240 million. Labor, land acquisition and construction payments would bring the cost for the wall to between $15 billion and $25 billion.
It is not clear who will be paying for the construction as Trump insists that Mexico will pay for it, while Mexico insists that it will not. Trump has also suggested to reporters that he could ransom Mexico into paying by blocking undocumented immigrants from sending money home, the BBC reported.

Jackson Cop Block & Liberty Is For Everyone travel to Detroit to the Million Mask March held on November 5th. "Remember, remember, the fifth of November." We arrived early to an extremely small crowd of attendees. There was also a Cosplay convention being held on the same day. Which turned out to be the better opportunity for video. There are some clips at the end of the main video.
We then took a walk by the tunnel that leads to Canada. DHS and the Border Patrol didn't like our camera's at all. Customs Agent Delaros tries to grab my camera from my hand. I recoil and prevent the unwanted theft of my property. Agent Delaros soon learns that he bitten off more than he can chew. We educate the many Border agents that flank and surround us. After continuing to film for a while longer, we move back to a over-watch position and film the border via drone.
We would also like to say that we are truly sorry to any travelers that had their movement stopped when the Border Agents shutdown the tunnel. No laws were broken at all, yet the Agents felt it was necessary to impede your travel based on lawful, right protected actions. Our goal was to audit and scrutinize the actions of tax funded agents of the state. To keep a record for all to see.

Every year, thousands of Mexicans illegally cross the US border. To find out exactly how it's done we went to El Alberto, Mexico to film the experience.
El Alberto lies 800 miles south of the US border in the state of Hidalgo. It's pretty much like any other town of 3,000 people, except in El Alberto they offer tourists the chance to participate in a simulated illegal border crossing. It all happens at a standard recreational park with swimming pools, river trips, zip lines, and the other typical fare. We took a few cameras and headed for the EcoAlberto Park to spend some late-nights running through underground tunnels on the heels of our personal "Coyote" while being chased by border patrol. While we were there, we crashed a quinceñera party and saw El Alberto from the perspective of the locals.

CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS — The MIT Technology Review is questioning Donald Trump’s claim that his proposed border wall will cost $12 billion. According to MIT, the cost could be closer to $40 billion.
Trump initially proposed to build a wall along all 2,000 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border, but then revised it down to half of the border, with the rest of the border left obstructed by natural barriers such as mountains.
According to the MIT Technology Review, building a wall 50 feet tall with 10 feet extended underground, at a length of 1,000 miles, will require about 9.7 million cubic meters of concrete, which costs about $9 billion. Since Trump has promised the wall will be reinforced with steel, it will need about 2.3 billion kilograms of steel, which adds $4.6 billion to the cost. The addition of labour costs and other expenses brings the estimated cost to between $27 billion and $40 billion.
Bernstein Research previously calculated in July that a wall of 5 ft wide, 1 ft deep and 1,000 miles long would require a total of 7.1 million m3 of concrete at a cost of over $700 million. It would also require around 2.4 million tonnes of cement at a cost of around $240 million. Labor, land acquisition and construction payments would bring the cost for the wall to between $15 billion and $25 billion.
It is not clear who will be paying for the construction as Trump insists that Mexico will pay for it, while Mexico insists that it will not. Trump has also suggested to reporters that he could ransom Mexico into paying by blocking undocumented immigrants from sending money home, the BBC reported.

Jackson Cop Block & Liberty Is For Everyone travel to Detroit to the Million Mask March held on November 5th. "Remember, remember, the fifth of November." We arrived early to an extremely small crowd of attendees. There was also a Cosplay convention being held on the same day. Which turned out to be the better opportunity for video. There are some clips at the end of the main video.
We then took a walk by the tunnel that leads to Canada. DHS and the Border Patrol didn't like our camera's at all. Customs Agent Delaros tries to grab my camera from my hand. I recoil and prevent the unwanted theft of my property. Agent Delaros soon learns that he bitten off more than he can chew. We educate the many Border agents that flank and surround us. After continuing to film for a while longer, we move back to a over-watch position and film the border via drone.
We would also like to say that we are truly sorry to any travelers that had their movement stopped when the Border Agents shutdown the tunnel. No laws were broken at all, yet the Agents felt it was necessary to impede your travel based on lawful, right protected actions. Our goal was to audit and scrutinize the actions of tax funded agents of the state. To keep a record for all to see.

Every year, thousands of Mexicans illegally cross the US border. To find out exactly how it's done we went to El Alberto, Mexico to film the experience.
El Alberto lies 800 miles south of the US border in the state of Hidalgo. It's pretty much like any other town of 3,000 people, except in El Alberto they offer tourists the chance to participate in a simulated illegal border crossing. It all happens at a standard recreational park with swimming pools, river trips, zip lines, and the other typical fare. We took a few cameras and headed for the EcoAlberto Park to spend some late-nights running through underground tunnels on the heels of our personal "Coyote" while being chased by border patrol. While we were there, we crashed a quinceñera party and saw El Alberto from the perspective of the locals.

This film shows what US immigration policy looks like on the ground for the people making the perilous journey for a better life, and for the Americans who call this borderland home.
Update: Since this film first aired on Al Jazeera English in 2007, the US continued to increase spending on border security. At no other time in history has there been as many border patrol officers on duty as there are today.
And now the authorities are bracing for a new challenge: children. Since 2014, the number of families and unaccompanied children apprehended at the border keeps skyrocketing.
Young people are filling family detention centres near the border, having fled poverty or extreme violence in Central America.
And today the issue is taking centre stage in this US presidential election, with Donald Trump calling for more walls, leading some migrants to say they will cross the border now before it may be too late.
