Thomas Woodrow Wilson (December 28, 1856 – February 3, 1924) was an American politician and academic who served as the 28th President of the United States from 1913 to 1921. Born in Staunton, Virginia, he spent his early years in Augusta, Georgia and Columbia, South Carolina. Wilson earned a PhD in political science, working as a professor and scholar at various institutions before being chosen as President of Princeton University, a position he held from 1902 to 1910. In the election of 1910, he was the gubernatorial candidate of New Jersey's Democratic Party, and was elected the 34th Governor of New Jersey, serving from 1911 to 1913. Running for president in 1912, a split in the Republican Party allowed his plurality, just over forty percent, to win him a large electoral college margin. As President, Wilson was a leading force in the Progressive Movement, bolstered by his Democratic Party's winning control of both the White House and Congress in 1912.
In office, Wilson reintroduced the spoken State of the Union, which had been out of use since 1801. Leading the Congress, now in Democratic hands, he oversaw the passage of progressive legislative policies unparalleled until the New Deal in 1933. Included among these were the Federal Reserve Act, Federal Trade Commission Act, the Clayton Antitrust Act, and the Federal Farm Loan Act. Having taken office one month after ratification of the Sixteenth Amendment, Wilson called a special session of Congress, whose work culminated in the Revenue Act of 1913, reintroducing an income tax and lowering tariffs. Through passage of the Adamson Act, imposing an 8-hour workday for railroads, he averted a railroad strike and an ensuing economic crisis. Upon the outbreak of World War I in 1914, Wilson maintained a policy of neutrality, while pursuing a more aggressive policy in dealing with Mexico's civil war.

Plot: Using archival footage and dramatic re-enactments, this documentary deals with the immediate aftermath of the 1918 armistice that brought World War I to an end. From January to July 1919, the Paris Peace Conference dealt not only with issues related to Germany but with the thorny issue of national boundaries in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. From this conference emerged Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia; the annexation of parts of Germany by other countries; the creation of Iraq; and the transfer of German colonies in Africa and China to new colonial masters. It also led to the creation of the League of Nations, championed by President Woodrow Wilson but which the US never joined. When they finally dealt with the issue of war reparations, they imposed a payments schedule on Germany that many believe provided the underpinnings of World War II.

Excerpt from The History Channel's "The Presidents" series featuring Woodrow Wilson.
Thomas Woodrow Wilson (December 28, 1856 -- February 3, 1924) was the 28th President of the United States, in office from 1913 to 1921. A leader of the Progressive Movement, he served as President of Princeton University from 1902 to 1910, and then as the Governor of New Jersey from 1911 to 1913. With the Republican Party split in 1912, he was elected as a Democrat. In his first term as President, Wilson persuaded a Democratic Congress to pass a legislative agenda that few presidents have equaled, remaining unmatched up until the New Deal in 1933. This agenda included the Federal Reserve Act, Federal Trade Commission Act, the Clayton Antitrust Act, the Federal Farm Loan Act and an income tax. Child labor was curtailed by the Keating--Owen Act of 1916, but the U.S. Supreme Court declared i...
While most would say the Federal Reserve was designed to stabilize the economy and prevent bank failures, more investigation shows that the Fed is a private banking cartel designed to work against the best interests of the American people. Woodrow Wilson was the president that signed the Federal Reserve legislation. Did he regret handing the power to create money to this cartel of banks? Some say he did, for Wilson has been quoted in saying: "I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is now controlled by its system of credit. We are no longer a government by free opinion, no longer a government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men." ~ Woodrow Wilson 1919. "The radical change in the relationship of the federal government to individual Americans was ratcheted up greatly in the Progressive Era," argues Judge Andrew Napolitano in his new book, Theodore and Woodrow: How Two American Presidents Destroyed Constitutional Freedom. The first decades of the 20th century saw an assault on individual liberties that was both unconstitutional and unprecedented in American history. From crackdowns on freedom of speech to the seizures of vast swaths of land, Judge Napolitano shows how the policies of two presidents from opposing parties laid the groundwork for a century of ever-expanding federal power. Judge Napolitano is chief legal analyst for Fox News, a syndicated columnist, and a Reason contributor (read his archive here). He recently sat down with N...

In this video, Woodrow Wilson and the Democrats win control of the US Government in the 1912 Election. http://readingthroughhistory.com/ Wilson and the Democrats Win in 1912 As governor of New Jersey, Woodrow Wilson championed many reform measures. As the Democrat nominee for President, he supported banking reform, lower tariffs, and more antitrust legislation. As the presidential campaign progressed, Wilson distanced himself from the rhetoric of the race, allowing Roosevelt and Taft to “sling mud” at one another. Taft criticized Roosevelt for his large ego, while Roosevelt dubbed Taft a “fathead.” Of the name calling, insults, and banter between the two former friends, Wilson commented, “Don’t interfere when your enemy is destroying himself.”

A progressive Southern Democrat, Woodrow Wilson used the office of the presidency to reverse all the gains African Americans had made since Reconstruction. In 1913, with the sole exception of federal government agencies, Washington D.C. was a solidly segregated town…Once Wilson became president; he quickly put an end to that. __________________________ The "African American History Is AMERICAN History" (AAHIAH) Radio/Classroom Video Series is an eclectic program that includes "old-time radio" style storytelling of historical events and bios of unsung heroes, guest interviews on both historical AND contemporary topics, music and commentary. In which John Green teaches you about the Progressive Presidents, who are not a super-group of former presidents who create complicated, symphonic, rock soundscapes that transport you into a fantasy fugue state. Although that would be awesome. The presidents most associated with the Progressive Era are Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, and Woodrow Wilson. During the times these guys held office, trusts were busted, national parks were founded, social programs were enacted, and tariffs were lowered. It wasn't all positive though, as their collective tenure also saw Latin America invaded A LOT, a split in the Republican party that resulted in a Bull Moose, all kinds of other international intervention, and the end of the Progressive Era saw the United States involved in World War. If all thi...
This video documents the Clayton Antitrust Act and the creation of the Federal Trade Commission. http://readingthroughhistory.com/ Wilson’s Antitrust Measures Trusts and trustbusting were major political concerns of the Progressive Era. While campaigning for President, Woodrow Wilson made the issue of breaking up trusts a major point of emphasis, promising to continue busting them if he were elected.

Very good film of US President Woodrow Wilson, United States of America (USA). Most likely shots are from train tour in September of 1919 to promote the League of Nations, though it could also be election campaign tour. Tracking shot from train looking back at large crowd walking towards camera waving. Includes some soldiers and marines. C U (profile) Wilson on train, waving, he then looks at camera and grins. Pan over crowds around train. Wilson is on back platform of train, he leans over to shake hands with crowd. Closer shot same. Wilson, Mrs. Wilson & others (Secret Service bodyguards etc.) descend from train to a waiting car. Wilson stands in car and speaks. Cut to motorcade rolling past waving, cheering crowds. Mr. President was a radio series that ran on the ABC Network from June 26, 1947 to September 23, 1953. Each half-hour episode was based on an incident in the life of one of the people who have held the office of President of the United States, but the dialogs were written in such a way as not to reveal the name of the President until the last line of dialog at the end of the program, when the President would be addressed by name. The audience was thus encouraged to guess, from the plot of the episode, which President it was. The series was created by Robert G. Jennings and written by a team that included Jean Holloway, Bernard Dougall and Ira Marion. A research staff made certain that the stories were accurate. It was produced and directed by Dick Woolen. The President each week was play...
Read your free e-book: http://easyget.us/mebk/50/en/B00YUY7LJA/book Drawing on sources in Japanese, Chinese, and American archives and libraries, this book reassesses another facet of Woodrow Wilson's agenda at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference at the end of World War I. Breaking with accepted scholarly opinions, the author argues that Wilson did not "betray" China, as many Chinese and Western scholars have charged; rather, Wilson successfully negotiated a compromise with the Japanese to ensure that China's sovereignty would be respected in Shandong Province. Rejecting the compromise, Chinese negotiators refused to sign the Treaty of Versailles, creating conditions for the Soviet Union's entry into China and its later influence over the course of the Chinese revolution.
