The man credited with developing Apple's successful retail strategy is turning his attention to cars. George Blankenship has joined electric-vehicle brand Tesla to head its expanding dealership network.

Blankenship, 57, has also worked for Microsoft and fashion label Gap and will be vice-president of design and store development.

Among his first tasks will be the opening of new dealerships in Tokyo, Toronto and Washington DC.

Tesla's chief executive, Elon Musk, says he wants his "stores" to look and feel more like a computer store than a traditional car dealership.

"Joining Tesla allows me to work with some of the boldest and brightest people on the planet," Blankenship says.

Tesla plans to launch a retail store in Sydney later this year.
