EA Sports said Friday that FIFA 16 will soon be patched to address problems that users uncovered in its Ultimate Team mode, wherein the most valuable players and items did not deliver fully on the benefits promised.

"Our work has shown that there appear to be some differences in how fitness and chemistry apply to some [Football Ultimate Team] items," FIFA's community manager wrote.

"Fitness" and "chemistry" are attribute modifiers that Ultimate Team applies to the base ratings of all players in its population. Fitness is a match-to-match assessment that takes into account a player's prior performances and fatigue. Chemistry is where players in the card-collection part of the game can see bonuses to player attributes when they're matched with professional teammates or countrymen (or both) adjacent to them in the order.

The problem is neither of these two features seemed to apply to the top tier of players offered in Football Ultimate Team, where players try to assemble the best possible side from the universe of international football stars, some of whom have multiple versions that are rarer and better-rated.

Users in the FIFA subreddit discovered glitches and other giveaways that showed the bonuses were not properly applied, meaning in some cases a common version of the same player would be more useful in actual gameplay than his rarer forms.

"The differences appear to be the same for all FUT fans, but only applying to some FUT items, so we're making some changes to ensure the attributes are being applied consistently across all items in the game," FIFA's community manager wrote.

The forthcoming title update is for all platforms — Windows PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. No specific date or window for this change has been set.

EA Sports' FIFA series drives a huge portion of the $692 million in Ultimate Team-related revenue that Electronic Arts reported to investors in its most recent fiscal year. (FIFA and four other series have Ultimate Team modes.) That figure is up 26 percent from the previous fiscal year. In April, FIFA 17 also was added to the vault of games made free to EA Access subscribers on Xbox One, who also enjoy a discount on purchases of virtual currency to pay for FUT items.
