Splatoon's final multiplayer event asks players to make the toughest call

Nintendo announced that it will host just one more Splatfest for Splatoon, its ink-based shooter on Wii U. The limited-time, team-based, themed events will end their yearlong run at 2 a.m. on July 24. This time, the choices are especially hard: Players must side with either Callie or Marie, the lovable hosts of the two-day tournaments. The Squid Sisters are Splatoon's mascots, earning their own amiibo figures and performing in several, real-life concerts. For players to have to choose between them is almost cruel; although they have distinct personalities and diverse interests, Callie and Marie always stand united, cheering the player on together. Starting at 7 p.m. PT on July 4, Splatoon fans must fight through their guilt to choose a side. The Splatfest kicks off July 22 and 2 a.m....

Watch Grand Kingdom's creator Tomohiko Deguchi build a Super Mario Maker level

On a recent trip to Japan, we visited a handful of Japanese game developers and asked them to contribute stages to our ongoing Devs Make Mario series. Among them: Tomohiko Deguchi, director of tactical role-playing game Grand Kingdom, which saw release in North America on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita this week. Deguchi, best known for directing the Japan-exclusive Vanillaware PSP title Grand Knights History, actually subverted the Devs Make Mario formula — in preparation for our visit, he created his entire Super Mario Maker stage ahead of time! The result: a surprisingly authentic Super Mario Bros. 3 level built around maximizing the abilities of Koopa Troopas. To play the level for yourself, use level code B425-0000-025D-38FA, or visit the page for Deguchi's stage "Grand March...

Devil's Third gets a price cut before online service shuts down for good

Nintendo will discontinue network connectivity features for Devil's Third, Valhalla Studios' Wii U exclusive according to a notice on its customer support site. Ahead of disconnecting the game's online service on Dec. 28 at 8 p.m. PT, the company will sell the digital version at half price on the eShop; Devil's Third now costs $29.99. Downloadable content will no longer be sold beginning June 27 at 9 a.m. PT. The Golden Egg add-ons were priced between $3.99 and $19.99 and could be traded for various weapon enhancements and cosmetic items. Devil's Third only made it stateside last December, despite launching in August 2015 in other territories. Mighty No. 9 review

It seems impossible to separate Mighty No. 9 from the series that birthed it: Mega Man. From its inception, Mighty No. 9 was pitched as a spiritual successor to Capcom's "Blue Bomber." Keiji Inafune, the Mega Man franchise's most recognizable figurehead, is at the helm of Mighty No. 9. He pledged to take Capcom's well-worn game mechanics and modernize them with the moral and financial support of fans. Developers Comcept and Inti Creates promised something "fresh and amazing" with their tribute to Mega Man. The final result, however, is a dull, unattractive, unpolished game that does little to improve upon, let alone emulate in a consistently enjoyable way, Mega Man's classic gameplay. Mighty No. 9 is out, available, finally released on a wide variety of platforms, and that, sadly,...

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE review

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE deserves its turn in the spotlight. Tokyo Mirage Sessions takes its characters' craft to heart. Every fight is a stage, every attack a performance, and the entire thing is paced so well that the act never truly wears thin. It trades on dungeons and combat in the style of the Shin Megami Tensei series (complete with shadowy demonic enemies bent on consuming our world) while borrowing a heap of fantasy lore from classic Fire Emblem games, then draws both into the gleaming world of pop stardom in present-day Tokyo. This mashup might seem absurd, but the end result is absurdly good. In spite of some of its source material, Tokyo Mirage Sessions feels as much like a magical girl anime (think upbeat teens with jeweled transformation lockets and overly sincere...

Mighty No. 9 had a rough launch day

Comcept released Mighty No. 9 today, June 21. That's an achievement for the studio, which announced the project three years ago and pushed back its release three times. But in a livestream leading up to the Kickstarter-funded game's launch, the team was less than celebratory. The Twitch archive is still available for the two-hour stream, and it's worth a watch. Translator Ben Judd hosted a discussion with people like lead designer Keiji Inafune (Judd's fellow ex-Capcom member) and other producers and directors about the trials of Mighty No. 9's lengthy production. It's a somber look into a studio's troubled development process, which has ran into several problems on a public scale for the past three years. Here's a variety of quotes from the team's Twitch stream: On the "fun" of game...

Mighty No. 9 backers aren't getting their promised DLC

Mighty No. 9 backers have yet to receive codes for the game's downloadable content, according to a variety of forums. Although publisher Deep Silver promised that keys for two types of DLC would be offered to backers upon release, many are reporting that that's not the case. A thread on the game's Steam forum includes numerous posts indicating that the Humble Bundle keys sent out this morning included two codes — for one type of DLC. Players are getting duplicate copies of the Retro Hero content, instead of one key each for the Retro Hero and Ray DLC. The game's Twitter account acknowledged the problem earlier today. The Retro Hero DLC is a pre-order bonus that gives the lead character Beck an 8-bit revamp. The Ray DLC adds an extra boss battle against the titular bad guy, as well as...

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games are coming to Virtual Console

Nintendo's adding three Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games to the Wii U Virtual Console this Thursday, June 23. For the first time, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team (for Game Boy Advance), Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky (both for Nintendo DS) will be playable on Wii U. Nintendo didn't give a price point for the re-releases, each of which are among the earliest entries in the roguelike spinoff series. Red and Blue Rescue Team first launched stateside in 2006; Explorers of Sky followed in 2009. The games let players control a variety of Pokémon themselves as they travel through randomly generated dungeons alongside other monsters. For fans of Pokémon and its myriad spinoffs, expect more Virtual Console releases to follow....

Nintendo's getting help from Monolith on Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Monolith Soft, makers of the Xenoblade games, are working with Nintendo on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Nintendo's creative fellow Shigeru Miyamoto told Game Informer that Nintendo had enlisted help from the team on its upcoming Wii U and NX game, which made a major appearance on the E3 2016 showfloor. Must Read Everything we Know about Breath of the Wild Breath of Wild is set to be the biggest Zelda game to date, one that returns to the series' more non-linear roots. In what capacity Monolith Soft is helping is unknown, but the team is familiar with designing open-world games: Xenoblade Chronicles X on Wii U is set in an expansive universe. Monolith also has other Zelda games on its resume, having contributed to the divisive Skyward Sword on...

Mighty No. 9 documentary reveals the game's early days, before production woes

Mighty No. 9 — barring any last-minute changes — will finally make it into players' hands tomorrow, June 21, and director Keiji Inafune can't wait to see their faces once they start playing. At least, that's what he said back in 2014, when the first episode of 2Player Productions' documentary series about Mighty No. 9, seen above, was filmed. The game's developer debuted the video on its Kickstarter page over the weekend as it geared up for launch, promising an early look at Mighty No. 9's protracted development. Watching with the benefit of hindsight changes the tenor of the episode, where Infaune and the rest of the team talk excitedly about the Mega Man successor's difficulty and lead an office tour. Discussion points include Inafune's frequent requests to his much greener...

How The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is learning from Skyward Sword's haters

In addition to being one of the most talked about games at E3 2016, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the first totally new console release in Nintendo's long-running franchise since 2011's The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. And though Skyward Sword was critically acclaimed, many elements of the game were divisive among fans. According to producer Eiji Aonuma, many of the sweeping changes that Breath of the Wild brings to the franchise are based on the negative feedback Nintendo received from some fans for Skyward Sword. "A lot of the fans that played Skyward Sword said that they were really bummed out that they couldn't find the hidden element of the game," Aonuma told Polygon. "A lot of the users, when they looked at the map, they said, 'OK, there's these places I can go,...

Watch 56 minutes of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild gameplay from E3 2016

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is arguably the biggest game of E3 2016 — so big, in fact, that Nintendo dedicated their entire booth to the game. We got a chance to go hands-on with the Wii U version of the title at this year's show, and walked away with a few cool stories, a ton to think about and a whole lot of gameplay. Above, watch nearly a full hour of us running around The Legend of Zelda's enormous, emergent open world playground — the majority of which we chose to spend as a half-naked, highly vulnerable and fire-obsessed version of Link (think Dark Souls naked runs). Nintendo plans to release The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the Wii U and NX in 2017. For more on the game, check out our hands-on impressions video, where we go in-depth on our thoughts after...

Nintendo's massive E3 Legend of Zelda demo is only one percent of the game

There's already a lot of footage floating around of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild — we've got nearly an hour on our YouTube channel! But if you're worried that you've already seen too much and there won't be any surprises by the time the game actually comes out next year, let your fears go: According to a Nintendo representative present during our E3 2016 demo, what's on display here represents a mere one percent of the total content in Breath of the Wild. Considering the size and sheer variety of things to do in this demo, that statistic seems impressive. What does it actually mean, though? According to The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma, quite a lot. "For this game, if 100 players play this game, there will be 100 options and 100 game experiences," Aonuma told...

Paper Mario: Color Splash: Launch date and details

Paper Mario: Color Splash launches Oct. 7 on Wii U, Nintendo announced today in a gameplay demonstration during its E3 livestream. The lighthearted action adventure RPG puts a Paint Hammer in Paper Mario's hands to let him re-color Prism Island. The game blends elements of platforming, turn-based combat and puzzle-solving. The screen of the Wii U controller can be used for a new "cut out" feature that alters the environment and helps Mario negotiate platform puzzles. Paper Mario: Color Splash is the fifth installment in the Paper Mario RPG series. Watch Polygon's hands-on demo below.

The line to play Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the real star of E3

Nintendo doesn't have much to show at E3 this year, but the company does have a new Zelda game called Breath of the Wild. That may be enough. The line to play Zelda is long. Really, really long. #E3 pic.twitter.com/I7VJz6hbjE — Jason Rechtman (@jsr7) June 14, 2016 Many people are reminded of the first time the Wii was shown to the public. That year had some pretty amazing lines as well. This line is even more impressive when you consider we were told Nintendo had around 160 stations for people to play the game. Line for Zelda is the longest Ive seen in a decade of going to #E3. Never thought Id see one longer than the Wii's. https://t.co/gj0OJjdnbJ — Craig at E3 (@StutteringCraig) June 14, 2016 If you want to see Nintendo's booth at all, you'll have to wait in...

You can beat The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild without finishing the story

We've already seen an awful lot of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at this year's E3, but one thing we haven't seen yet is the game's conclusion. Maybe that's obvious, but according to the game's creators, dedicated players will be able to speed on through to the game's finish right from the start, if they wish to do so. "Users may not actually get the full story depending on how they play this game and how they strategize and solve puzzles," producer Eiji Aonuma told Polygon. "Users are able to go to the very end goal without revealing why Link woke up the way he did and where he did. Whether you want to reveal the storyline and find out why Link woke up, or you want to just go straight to the goal, that's an option totally up to the user." When asked, Aonuma confirmed that a...

Meet Archer, Rider and Guardian

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild gets three new amiibo, here they are

Those figures include Archer, which is Link with a bow, Rider, which is link on horseback, and Guardian, which will be the first amiibo with flexible parts. The existing Wolf Link amiibo works with the game as well. When players tap the Wolf Link amiibo to the Wii U GamePad controller, Wolf Link will attack enemies on his own and help players to hunt. He has three hearts, unless players carry over save data from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD. Wolf Link disappears when his hearts run out. There are no details yet about what the three new amiibo will do in the game when it comes out. Watch the first five minutes of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Nintendo is enjoying a very Legend of Zelda-heavy day today, and the company is streaming the opening of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on its official stream. You can watch the first five minutes below, and we're pretty excited how this looks. There are some interesting things here, not the least of which is the fact that we now know the Link wears boxer briefs. You'll also get access to the Sheikah Tablet, a magical device that seems to operate much like the Wii U controller. It's also interesting how much of the game, from the fonts of the title screen to the way Link moves, seems to be taken from past games in the series. They also stated that you'll be able to play the entire game nude if you'd like, so the count down until someone does a nude speedrun will likely begin the...
