Dragon’s Crown is the first casualty of Atlus and NIS America’s publishing breakup (update)

Vanillaware’s beat-em-up Dragon’s Crown has disappeared from the European PlayStation Store, thanks to the end of publisher NIS America’s relationship with Atlus, which licensed the game to that company. The PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita title is no longer up for sale in those territories, with no word on when it will return. It's unclear for how long Dragon's Crown has been missing. A Reddit user noticed that the game was gone yesterday, however, when the European PlayStation Blog announced a sale on Japanese games. Among the discounted titles, according the post, was Dragon’s Crown. Yet following the link to the game’s store page leads to an error message. Must Read Read our review of Dragon's Crown Today, NIS America confirmed on Twitter that an...

Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma review

Zero Time Dilemma is, in many ways, an ideal series-ender. As the final chapter of a beloved trilogy, the game had the odds stacked against it: Having played and loved the previous Zero Escape games, I came in with high expectations. Falling short of tying up the series' various loose ends and solving its most pressing questions could have left me cold. But this finale — set between the preceding entries — manages to tell a stand-alone, engrossing story while wrapping up most of the biggest plotlines set up by the prior two Zero Escape chapters. It's a rare feat, although not one without missteps as the game attempts to balance a heavy narrative focus with challenging gameplay. Like the previous games (999: Nine Persons, Nine Hours, Nine Doors and Virtue’s Last Reward), Zero Time...

Zero Time Dilemma's launch marred by major Amazon shipping woes (update)

Zero Time Dilemma, the final chapter in Spike Chunsoft's Zero Escape series, launched today, but Amazon customers are having a hard time getting their hands on it. Customers are reporting that shipments of both the standard and special editions of the game aren't slated to arrive until later this week at the earliest. Others are being told they may have to wait upward of four weeks for the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita puzzle-adventure game to arrive. The problem started earlier this week, however, when senior marketing manager Danny Miscevich of publisher Aksys Games tweeted about a delay for the game's pre-order bonus. Those who bought the special edition were expecting to receive a watch item modeled after those worn by the characters in-game. But on June 24, Miscevich said that...

Adventures of Mana arrives as a surprise for Vita fans

Square Enix brought the PlayStation Vita version of the Adventures of Mana remake stateside today, months after promising fans that it would look into localizing the handheld port. The game is now available on the PlayStation Store for $13.99. The surprise release comes nearly five months after the enhanced Adventures of Mana — formerly known out West as Final Fantasy Adventure — launched on iOS and Android. Japanese fans, however, had the option to play the game on Vita upon its initial release. "When Adventures of Mana was originally released, a lot of PS Vita owners were disappointed that we couldn't launch it worldwide at the time," wrote Dan Seto, a community manager for Square Enix, on the PlayStation Blog. The publisher acknowledged the complaints on its Twitter, writing in...

Newcomers can catch up to Zero Time Dilemma's story with this 11-minute recap

Spike Chunsoft's Zero Escape games are visual novels full of mystery, intrigue and more plot twists than anyone can hope to keep track of. The YouTubers behind Suggesting Gaming make a valiant attempt to do so, however, in their recap of the first two installments above. The 11-minute video comprises the entirety of 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Virtue's Last Reward, each a complex puzzle game-visual novel hybrid. Catching up with the plots of these two titles is helpful for those interested in the series' third and final entry, Zero Time Dilemma. That game launches tomorrow, June 28, on Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Vita. For the first time in the Zero Escape franchise, it's also coming to Steam a day later. It's recommended that players check out the previous two games...

Australia denies rating to MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death for not meeting 'standards of morality'

Upcoming Japanese dungeon-crawler MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death has been refused classification by the Australian government. In publisher Idea Factory's application on the classification board's website, the organization explains that the game "is likely to cause offense to a reasonable adult." That's because of its depictions of sex and violence, according to the classification's rejection notice. The government cited the game as belonging to a group of other offensive, banned titles, which "depict, express or otherwise deal with matters of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime, cruelty, violence or revolting or abhorrent phenomena in such a way that they offend against the standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults to the extent that they should...

This is how the Dynasty Warriors team turned Attack on Titan into a game

Omega Force, the developer behind the ever-popular Dynasty Warriors series of beat-em-ups, may not seem like the most obvious choice for developing a game based on the dark, post-apocalyptic manga/anime Attack on Titan. After all, Dynasty Warriors is all about murdering legions of enemy soldiers, whereas in Attack on Titan, taking down even a single massive titan is a struggle and a huge accomplishment. Omega Force didn't let that slow them down, however. We got to play Koei Tecmo's new Attack on Titan game for ourselves at E3 last week, and you can see our 20 minutes with the game in the video above. Don't be surprised if you notice some awkwardness in the first five minutes or so; Attack on Titan's interpretation of the series' iconic Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear takes some...

Mighty No. 9 backers aren't getting their promised DLC

Mighty No. 9 backers have yet to receive codes for the game's downloadable content, according to a variety of forums. Although publisher Deep Silver promised that keys for two types of DLC would be offered to backers upon release, many are reporting that that's not the case. A thread on the game's Steam forum includes numerous posts indicating that the Humble Bundle keys sent out this morning included two codes — for one type of DLC. Players are getting duplicate copies of the Retro Hero content, instead of one key each for the Retro Hero and Ray DLC. The game's Twitter account acknowledged the problem earlier today. The Retro Hero DLC is a pre-order bonus that gives the lead character Beck an 8-bit revamp. The Ray DLC adds an extra boss battle against the titular bad guy, as well as...

Mighty No. 9 documentary reveals the game's early days, before production woes

Mighty No. 9 — barring any last-minute changes — will finally make it into players' hands tomorrow, June 21, and director Keiji Inafune can't wait to see their faces once they start playing. At least, that's what he said back in 2014, when the first episode of 2Player Productions' documentary series about Mighty No. 9, seen above, was filmed. The game's developer debuted the video on its Kickstarter page over the weekend as it geared up for launch, promising an early look at Mighty No. 9's protracted development. Watching with the benefit of hindsight changes the tenor of the episode, where Infaune and the rest of the team talk excitedly about the Mega Man successor's difficulty and lead an office tour. Discussion points include Inafune's frequent requests to his much greener...

Watch the first 20 minutes of Dragon Quest Builders

If the block-based building of Minecraft appeals to you but you'd prefer a little more direction — or straight up blueprints that tell you exactly what to build — perhaps Dragon Quest Builders is for you. Or, if you simply have a longstanding love affair with Dragon Quest, Dragon Quest Builders might also be for you. Square Enix's oft-compared-to-Minecraft spin-off of the Dragon Quest series takes place shortly after the events of the first game in the franchise. It tells the story of the kingdom of Alefgard after the Dragonlord of the original Dragon Quest took control of half the world. As the hero of Dragon Quest Builders, gifted with the power of construction, you're tasked with rebuilding that destroyed world. You'll help the citizens of Alefgard in their time of need, harvesting...

Why hasn't Dragon Quest found a big audience out West?

Most gaming fans worldwide know of Dragon Quest, but it's not an unfair assumption that a much smaller number of them have played the series. It's wildly popular in Japan, and has been for 30 years now. But, as several members of Square Enix acknowledged when we spoke during E3 2016, that just hasn't been the case stateside. "There's two main reasons" why Dragon Quest isn't as popular outside of its native country, producer Yu Miyake told Polygon. "The first is that, in Japan, the Famicom was kind of the moment that video games became part of families, and people really started bringing them into their homes." Enix released the original Dragon Quest in 1986. To many Japanese gamers, Miyake said, it's the title they continue to strongly, nostalgically associate with the medium. W...

Omega Force's next Warriors game is based on Berserk

Omega Force, developer of the Musou (Warriors) series, will release a game based on the popular series Berserk this August in Japan. The announcement comes from a trailer, which the studio released following a countdown timer. The video above shows off a ton of blood, guts and bodies. There's not much else known yet about Berserk Musou yet, beyond the launch window and platforms; it's out for PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita and Windows PC on Aug. 23 in Japan, but remains unscheduled stateside. Publisher Koei Tecmo America referred to it as "the most lethal Warriors game" yet. A new anime based on Berserk, whose manga has ran since 1989, will premiere this July in Japan.

Inafune is already talking about plans for a Mighty No. 9 sequel

Mighty No. 9 hasn't launched yet — still 10 more days to go — and even though its community has been disappointed by repeated delays and jeered the game's launch trailer, creator Keiji Inafune is still speaking expansively about future projects under its name. Speaking to 4Gamer (translation by Siliconera) Inafune said Comcept is "also moving forward in an anime and live action film for [MIghty No. 9]." Further, "development for a sequel [video game] is already in our minds, and we all share the feeling of 'we'll do it even if it doesn't sell'." Last summer, with Mighty No. 9 delayed past its original spring 2015 window and a month from its first declared launch date, Comcept opened a Kickstarter for another video game project, also billed as a spiritual successor to the Mega Man...

Dragon Quest Builders comes stateside this fall, in time for series' 30th anniversary

Dragon Quest Builders arrives in the West this October on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. A sandbox game set in the world of the very first Dragon Quest, Builders is one of several games planned for release this year in celebration of the franchise's 30th anniversary — the series turned 30 just yesterday, in fact. The newest trailer above shows how Dragon Quest Builders puts a new spin on Alefgard, familiar to series fans as the setting of the first game. As a renowned Legendary Builder, players must reconstruct the world after the first Dragon Quest's protagonist turns to the dark side. It's a story that follows Dragon Quest's "bad ending," and we enjoyed how Dragon Quest Builders plays off the series' familiar features when we tried it at Tokyo Game Show 2015. Read our preview...

PlayStation 4 is leading the console race, and Sony is hoping it stays that way

E3 2016 for Sony: How the console king stays on top

Sony has an easy job at this year's E3 press conference: The PlayStation 4 is winning the console race with 40 million units shipped as of March of this year, and the hardware continues to provide better visuals for many multiplatform games while exclusives continue to sell well. Sony doesn't have to launch new hardware if it doesn't want to, and the company gets to continue to focus on games and the core platform of the PlayStation to keep people happy. Sony is sitting where its competitors would like to be, which means the press conference on June 13 at 9 p.m. EDT can focus on delighting existing customers and keeping the momentum rather than making up any lost ground. Sony's show takes place after Microsoft's as well, which means the gaming giant will know what it's up against...
