When it comes to unusual cover songs, you wouldn't expect Ben Caplan nor Old Man Luedecke to be covering "Uptown Funk," the massive hit from Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars.
When we were organizing the First Play Live session with Luedecke and Caplan, it was almost an affront to genuine artistry to ask these two folk stalwarts to add a Top 40 pop song cover to their set list. But both Ben Caplan, Old Man Luedecke and their brilliant bands blazed incandescently while recording this absolutely killer cover of the hit track.

Ben Caplan
Ben Caplan is a Canadian folk musician from Halifax, Nova Scotia. He often performs with his band The Casual Smokers, and his first full-length studio album, In the Time of the Great Remembering, was released on October 20, 2011. His sophomore record Birds With Broken Wings, was released September 18, 2015.
Career
Early years
Ben Caplan was born June 4, 1986 and raised in Hamilton, Ontario and now resides in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He began writing music at the age of 13 with friends, but it was at the age of 19 that he started his journey as an independent singer-songwriter. Although he studied at the University of King's College, he decided that in order to have a career in music, it would have to become his priority. He participated in the Artist Entrepreneur program through Coalition Music (Canada’s Music Incubator) which helps emerging artists build their careers, businesses, and brands. He has been a touring musician since 2006 and released his first full-length album in 2009.

Ben Caplan's beard came through the door of CBC Music back in July, followed by his body and his band, and followed in turn by Old Man Luedecke and his band. This procession of hair and musicians had us very excited.
We asked Caplan and Old Man Luedecke to team up for a double First Play Live session and, despite the increased difficulty, both artists delivered stellar new music and collaborated with each other on three songs.
You can watch Old Man Luedecke's FPL session (in the playlist above,) paying special attention for Caplan on the Luedecke song "Yodelady." Both artists and their bands also conspired on a riotous banjo and fiddle laden cover of "Uptown Funk."
Caplan debuted four of his own new songs: "Beautiful," also featuring Luedecke, as well as "Birds With Broken Wings," "Belly of the Worm" and "Under Control."

Ben Caplan debuts his album Birds With Broken Wings in this CBC Music First Play Live session.

Ben Caplan's beard came through the door of CBC Music back in July, followed by his body and his band, and followed in turn by Old Man Luedecke and his band. This procession of hair and musicians had us very excited.
We asked Caplan and Old Man Luedecke to team up for a double First Play Live session and, despite the increased difficulty, both artists delivered stellar new music and collaborated with each other on three songs.
You can watch Old Man Luedecke's FPL session (in the playlist above,) paying special attention for Caplan on the Luedecke song "Yodelady." Both artists and their bands also conspired on a riotous banjo and fiddle laden cover of "Uptown Funk."
Caplan debuted four of his own new songs: "Beautiful," also featuring Luedecke, as well as "Birds With Broken Wings," "Belly of the Worm" and "Under Control."
