In this eye-opening talk, veteran investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson shows how astroturf, or fake grassroots movements funded by political, corporate, or other special interests very effectively manipulate and distort media messages.
Sharyl Attkisson is an investigative journalist based in Washington D.C. She is currently writing a book entitled Stonewalled (Harper Collins), which addresses the unseen influences of corporations and special interests on the information and images the public receives every day in the news and elsewhere. For twenty years (through March 2014), Attkisson was a correspondent for CBS News. In 2013, she received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Investigative Journalism for her reporting on “The Business of Congress,” which included an undercover investigation into fundraising by Republican freshmen. She also received Emmy nominations in 2013 for Benghazi: Dying for Security and Green Energy Going Red. Additionally, Attkisson received a 2013 Daytime Emmy Award as part of the CBS Sunday Morning team’s entry for Outstanding Morning Program for her report: “Washington Lobbying: K-Street Behind Closed Doors.” In September 2012, Attkisson also received an Emmy for Oustanding Investigative Journalism for the “Gunwalker: Fast and Furious” story. She received the RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Investigative Reporting for the same story. Attkisson received an Investigative Emmy Award in 2009 for her exclusive investigations into TARP and the bank bailout. She received an Investigative Emmy Award in 2002 for her series of exclusive reports about mismanagement at the Red Cross.

A while ago, somebody asked my if I might do a video talking about Wikipedia - specifically some of the problems plaguing the site beneath the hood. At the time, I didn't know a lot about Wiki bureaucracy, but after watching their processes and keeping track of the Gamergate talk page for a while, I got quite a sense not just for the site's inner machinery, but also for some serious problems they're facing.
The biggest issue they have is that they're staunchly bureaucratic, but they technically don't have any rules when you get right down to it. As a consequence, they tend to enforce things based on flaky, whimsical interpretations backed up by some logic and reasoning with potent spices of personal bias. For the most part the site functions well enough, but certain pages functionally belong to people who are, in essence, emotionally unstable, albeit capable of citing every "rule" the place has. You can watch as rude, frothing jerks get banned from the site only to have to ban immediately lifted by a friend from a higher place. This, along with a number facts, has led to a decline in the number of editors willing to try to work on Wikipedia. It doesn't seem to be killing the site by any means, but it does suggest Wikipedia is vulnerable to passive-aggression and destructive behavior, and you can never tell if a page has been written and maintained by a crazy person or by crazy people.

Some Wikipedia articles include sound or video files, which can be played on almost all personal computers. However, your computer must have the right software. If your computer does not automatically play these files when you click on them, downloading and installing free software from the internet can enable it to do so.
Sound files on Wikipedia generally use the Vorbis audio format, and video files use the Theora format, both contained in an Ogg file. These are analogous to other formats used to play digital audio and video such as MP3 and MPEG. However, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X do not support these formats by default, and require additional software to play them (see below).
Music files may occasionally use the MIDI format (.MID or .MIDI extension). MIDI is generally playable without additional software, as most computers have a MIDI-enabled player and sound card.

Jimmy Donal "Jimbo" Wales (
/ˈdoʊnəl ˈweɪlz/; born August 7, 1966) is an American Internet entrepreneur best known as a co-founder and promoter of the online non-profit encyclopedia Wikipedia and the Wikia company. Wales was born in Huntsville, Alabama, United States, where he attended Randolph School, a university-preparatory school, then earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in finance. While in graduate school, he taught at two universities, but left before completing a PhD in order to take a job in finance and later worked as the research director of a Chicago futures and options firm. In 1996, he and two partners founded Bomis, a male-oriented web portal featuring entertainment and adult content. The company would provide the initial funding for the peer-reviewed free encyclopedia Nupedia (2000–2003) and its successor, Wikipedia.
On January 15, 2001, with Larry Sanger and others, Wales launched Wikipedia, a free, open content encyclopedia that enjoyed rapid growth and popularity, and as Wikipedia’s public profile grew, he became the project’s promoter and spokesman. He is historically cited as a co-founder of Wikipedia, though he has disputed the "co-" designation, declaring himself the sole founder. Wales serves on the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit charitable organization he helped establish to operate Wikipedia, holding its board-appointed "community founder" seat. In 2004, he co-founded Wikia, a for-profit wiki-hosting service. His role in creating Wikipedia, which has become the world’s largest encyclopedia, prompted Time magazine to name him in its 2006 list of the world’s most influential people.

She is currently writing a book entitled Stonewalled (Harper Collins), which addresses the unseen influences of corporations and special interests on the information and images the public receives every day in the news and elsewhere. For twenty years (through March 2014), Attkisson was a correspondent for CBS News. In 2013, she received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Investigative Journalism for her reporting on “The Business of Congress,” which included an undercover investigation into fundraising by Republican freshmen. She also received Emmy nominations in 2013 for Benghazi: Dying for Security and Green Energy Going Red. Additionally, Attkisson received a 2013 Daytime Emmy Award as part of the CBS Sunday Morning team’s entry for Outstanding Morning Program for her report: “Washington Lobbying: K-Street Behind Closed Doors.” In September 2012, Attkisson also received an Emmy for Oustanding Investigative Journalism for the “Gunwalker: Fast and Furious” story. She received the RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Investigative Reporting for the same story. A while ago, somebody asked my if I might do a video talking about Wikipedia - specifically some of the problems plaguing the site beneath the hood. At the time, I didn't know a lot about Wiki bureaucracy, but after watching their processes and keeping track of the Gamergate talk page for a while, I got quite a sense not just for the site's inner machinery, but also for some serious problems they're facing.
The biggest issue they have is that they're staunchly bureaucratic, but they technically don't have any rules when you get right down to it. As a consequence, they tend to enforce things based on flaky, whimsical interpretations backed up by some logic and reasoning with potent spices of personal bias. For the most part the site functions well enough, but certain pages functionally belong to people who are, in essence, emotionally unstable, albeit capable of citing every "rule" the place has. You can watch as rude, frothing jerks get banned from the site only to have to ban immediately lifted by a friend from a higher place. This, along with a number facts, has led to a decline in the number of editors willing to try to work on Wikipedia. It doesn't seem to be killing the site by any means, but it does suggest Wikipedia is vulnerable to passive-aggression and destructive behavior, and you can never tell if a page has been written and maintained by a crazy person or by crazy people.

Israel's political elite wants to establish a Greater Israel and destroy the Palestinian nationalist movement. In his article, "The U.S. And Israel's 'Obsession' With Iran -- The Real Reasons," Lataan writes:

Why World War III: Destroy The Global Economy, Create A Greater Israel, And Establish A Global Authoritarian Government.
Israel's political elite wants to establish a Greater Israel and destroy the Palestinian nationalist movement. In his article, "The U.S. And Israel's 'Obsession' With Iran -- The Real Reasons," Lataan writes:

There is great opportunity for such data to help provide global coverage of a variety of topics. Yet, there is also a risk that language barriers and coverage biases present in the data can limit the information available to certain user communities. In this talk, I will present research that illustrates both the challenges and opportunities of user-generated content in the context of multilingual Wikipedia. First, I will present studies that empirically assess the content diversity and coverage biases that exist across numerous language editions of Wikipedia. Next, I will demonstrate the effects these coverage biases can have on end-user technologies. Finally, I will introduce Omnipedia—a system our lab developed that highlights the opportunities such data present for designing a new class of global technologies.
Bio: Darren Gergle (Ph.D., Carnegie Mellon University) is a Professor in Communication Studies and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (by courtesy) at Northwestern University. His research focuses on social computing and human-computer interaction, and applies cognitive and social psychological theories to the design, development and evaluation of novel communication technologies.
