Wikipedia was founded as an offshoot of Nupedia, a now-abandoned project to produce a free encyclopedia. Nupedia had an elaborate system of peer review and required highly qualified contributors, but the writing of articles was slow. During 2000, Jimmy Wales, founder of Nupedia, and Larry Sanger, whom Wales had employed to work on the project, discussed ways of supplementing Nupedia with a more open, complementary project. Multiple sources suggested that a wiki might allow members of the public to contribute material, and Nupedia's first wiki went online on January 10, 2001.
There was considerable resistance on the part of Nupedia's editors and reviewers to the idea of associating Nupedia with a website in the wiki format, so the new project was given the name "Wikipedia" and launched on its own domain, wikipedia.com, on January 15 (now called "Wikipedia Day" by some users). The bandwidth and server (in San Diego) were donated by Wales. Other current and past Bomis employees who have worked on the project include Tim Shell, one of the cofounders of Bomis and its current CEO, and programmer Jason Richey. The domain was eventually changed to the present wikipedia.org when the not-for-profit Wikimedia Foundation was launched as its new parent organization, with the ".org" top-level domain denoting its non-commercial nature.
In May 2001, a large number of non-English Wikipedias were launched — in Catalan, Chinese, Dutch, Esperanto, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish. These were soon joined by Arabic and Hungarian.[2] In September,[3] Polish was added, and further commitment to the multilingual provision of Wikipedia was made. At the end of the year, Afrikaans, Norwegian, and Serbo-Croatian versions were announced.

Wikipedia is a registered trademark of the not-for-profit Wikimedia Foundation, which has created a family of free-content projects that are built by user contributions.
Most of Wikipedia's text and many of its images are dual-licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License (CC-BY-SA) and the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts). Some text has been imported only under CC-BY-SA and CC-BY-SA-compatible license and cannot be reused under GFDL; such text is identified either on the page footer, in the page history or on the discussion page of the article that utilizes the text. Every image has a description page which indicates the license under which it is released or, if it is non-free, the rationale under which it is used.

A wiki é um conjunto de websites que permite aos seus utilizadores criar e editar informações nos sites a qualquer dia, a qualquer hora. Mesmo com a existência da Wiki já há algum tempo, só recentemente têm sido utilizados a nível mundial.
Agora, estão a revolucionar a maneira como as pessoas colaboram e partilham as suas ideias e informações na internet.
Mais tarde, em Março de 2000, Jimmy Wales e Larry Sanger decidiram que queriam criar uma Enciclopédia online grátis, rival da Microsoft Encarta e da Enciclopédia Britânica. E Wales e Sanger deram-lhe o nome de Nupedia.
Nupedia foi uma aventura sem fins lucrativos que recebia os artigos para serem revistos e só depois podiam estar disponíveis para o público. Os contribuidores do website teriam de ser especialistas no assunto e licenciados. Infelizmente, no fim de 2000, houve um despique onde vários sites começaram a "cair" e acabaram. Como a Nupedia não era imune à economia online e a sua busca era menor, pôs fim ao website em 2003. E nestes 3 anos de existência, a Nupedia produziu apenas 24 artigos.
Mariana: Ao mesmo tempo que a Nupedia começou, Wales e Sanger usaram a tecnologia do Wiki para começarem a Wikipedia em Janeiro de 2001, com a intenção do publico criar, editar, sugerir e adicionar informação ao website.
Como era possível na nupedia, qualquer pessoa pode criar, editar e discutir os conteúdos na wikipedia.
Com o falhanço da nupedia em 2003, wales e Sanger deram muito mais atenção à wikipedia. Em comparação com os 24 artigos do nupedia, a wikipedia criou certa de 20mil.
Surpreso pela popularidade da wikipedia, jimmy wales decidiu abandonar a nupedia e focar-se em encorajar que qualquer pessoa pode editar artigos no wikipedia mas como Sager não aprovou esta decisão, este (sanger) decidiu abandonar o projecto.
Desde 2003, wikipedia cresceu para certa de 10 milhões de artigos em cerca de 260 línguas. Em inglês há cerca de 29 milhões de artigos 47213.
O wikipedia continua no top10 dos sites mais visitados e a sua popularidade tem encorajado o google news para ter links directos de conteúdos do wikipedia nos seus artigos de noticias e, apesar de tudo, a wikipedia continuou com a secção para editar os artigos.
O wikipedia tem recebido varias criticas e varias controvérsias e o fim do projecto pode não estar completamente certo, mas uma coisa é certa, quer tu adores ou odeies, o wikipedia afectou e afecta drasticamente como acedemos e partilhamos informação na internet.

Jimmy Wales is an Internet entrepreneur and wiki enthusiast, and founder of the Wikipedia project. Jimmy was born in Huntsville, Alabama in 1966, and is a graduate of Auburn University and the University of Alabama. He worked as Research Director at Chicago Options Associates, a futures and options trading firm then located in Chicago. In the mid-1990s he started Bomis, a search portal focusing on aspects of pop culture, one of the first users of the freely licensed data of the Open Directory Project. In 1999, Jimmy had the concept of a freely distributable encyclopedia and founded Nupedia, by hiring philosopher Larry Sanger as editor-in-chief and assigning two programmers to write software for it. Nupedia failed, perhaps due to being a top-down cathedral model, as opposed to Wikipedia, which is the ultimate bazaar. After two years of working with the Nupedia concept, that team opened Wikipedia to help channel content into Nupedia; Wikipedia became an instant success, but not in the envisioned way, and Nupedia was shut down. In 2003, Jimmy set up the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization, to support Wikipedia and its sister projects. In 2004, Jimmy founded Wikia. He was appointed a fellow of Harvard Law School's Berkman Center for Internet and Society in mid-2005, and in October of 2005 joined the Board of Directors of Socialtext, a provider of wiki technology to businesses. Jimmy Donal "Jimbo" Wales is an American Internet entrepreneur and a co-founder and promoter of Wikipedia.
Wales was born in Huntsville, Alabama, United States. He attended The Randolph School, a university-preparatory school, then earned bachelor's and master's degrees in finance. While in graduate school, he taught at two universities. He later took a job in finance, and worked as the research director of a Chicago futures and options firm for several years. In 1996, he and two partners founded Bomis, a men's web portal featuring entertainment and adult content. This website provided the initial funding for the peer-reviewed encyclopedia Nupedia (2000--2003) and its successor, Wikipedia.
In 2001, together with Larry Sanger and others, Wales helped launch Wikipedia, a free, open content encyclopedia that enjoyed rapid growth and popularity, and as Wikipedia's public profile grew, he became the project's promoter and spokesman. He is historically cited as a co-founder of Wikipedia, though he has disputed the "co-" designation in declaring himself the sole founder. Wales serves on the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit charitable organization which operates Wikipedia. He holds its board-appointed "community founder" seat. In 2004, he co-founded Wikia, a privately owned, free Web-hosting service, with fellow Wikimedia trustee Angela Beesley.
He describes himself as an Objectivist and, with reservations, a libertarian. His role in creating Wikipedia, which has become the world's largest encyclopedia, prompted Time magazine to name him in its 2006 list of the world's most influential people. Neither Sanger nor Wales expected very much from the Nupedia wiki initiative. Wales, anticipating "complete rubbish", hoped that if they were lucky, Wikipedia might yield a couple of rough draft entries for Nupedia. To the surprise of Sanger and Wales, within a few days of launching the number of articles on Wikipedia had outgrown that of Nupedia, and a small collective of editors had formed. Many of the early contributors to the site were familiar with the model of the free culture movement, and, like Wales, many of them sympathized with the open-source movement. Wales has said that he was initially so worried with the concept of open editing, where anyone can edit the encyclopedia, that he would awake during the night and monitor what was being added. Nonetheless, the cadre of early editors helped create a robust, self-regulating community that has proven conducive to the growth of the project.
Sanger developed Wikipedia in its early phase and guided the project. The broader idea he ascribes to Wales, remarking in a 2005 memoir for Slashdot that "the idea of an open source, collaborative encyclopedia, open to contribution by ordinary people, was entirely Jimmy's, not mine, and the funding was entirely by Bomis", adding, "the actual development of this encyclopedia was the task he gave me to work on." Sanger worked on and promoted both the Nupedia and Wikipedia projects until Bomis discontinued funding for his position in February 2002; Sanger resigned as editor-in-chief of Nupedia and as "chief organizer" of Wikipedia on March 1 of that year. In the early years, Wales had supplied the financial backing for the project, and entertained the notion of placing advertisements on Wikipedia before costs were reduced with Sanger's departure and plans for a nonprofit foundation were advanced instead.

The concept of gathering all of the world's knowledge in a single place goes back to the ancient Library of Alexandria and Pergamon, but the modern concept of a general purpose, widely distributed, printed encyclopedia dates from shortly before Denis Diderot and the 18th century encyclopedists. The idea of using automated machinery beyond the printing press to build a more useful encyclopedia can be traced to Paul Otlet's book Traité de documentation (1934; Otlet also founded the Mundaneum institution, 1910), H. G. Wells' book of essays World Brain (1938) and Vannevar Bush's future vision of the microfilm based Memex in As We May Think (1945). Another milestone was Ted Nelson's hypertext design Project Xanadu, begun in 1960.
While previous encyclopedias, notably the Encyclopedia Britannica were book-based, Microsoft's Encarta published in 1993, was available on CD-ROM, and hyperlinked.
With the development of the web, many people attempted to develop Internet encyclopedia projects. An early proposal was Interpedia in 1993 by Rick Gates; ut this project died before generating any encyclopedic content. Free software exponent Richard Stallman described the usefulness of a "Free Universal Encyclopedia and Learning Resource" in 1999. is published document "aims to lay out what the free encyclopedia needs to do, what sort of freedoms it needs to give the public, and how we can get started on developing it." On 17 January 2001, two days after the start of Wikipedia, the Free Software Foundation's GNUPedia project went online, competing with Nupedia, ut today the FSF encourages people "to visit and contribute to [Wikipedia]".
Wikipedia was initially conceived as a feeder project for Nupedia, an earlier project to produce a free online encyclopedia, founded by Bomis, a web-advertising-selling firm owned by Jimmy Wales, Tim Shell and Michael E. Davis. upedia was founded upon the use of highly qualified volunteer contributors and an elaborate multi-step peer review process. Despite its mailing-list of interested editors, and the presence of a full-time editor-in-chief, Larry Sanger, a graduate philosophy student hired by Wales, he writing of content was extremely slow with only 12 articles written during the first year.
The idea of a wiki-based complement originated from a conversation between Larry Sanger and Ben Kovitz. Ben Kovitz was a computer programmer and regular on Ward Cunningham's revolutionary wiki "the WikiWikiWeb". He explained to Sanger what wikis were, at that time a difficult concept to understand, over a dinner on 2 January 2001.Wales first stated, in October 2001, that "Larry had the idea to use Wiki software", though he later claimed in December 2005 that Jeremy Rosenfeld, a Bomis employee, introduced him to the concept. Sanger thought a wiki would be a good platform to use, and proposed on the Nupedia mailing list that a wiki based upon UseModWiki (then v. 0.90) be set up as a "feeder" project for Nupedia. Under the subject "Let's make a wiki", he wrote:
" No, this is not an indecent proposal. It's an idea to add a little feature to Nupedia. Jimmy Wales thinks that many people might find the idea objectionable, but I think not. (...) As to Nupedia's use of a wiki, this is the ULTIMATE "open" and simple format for developing content. We have occasionally bandied about ideas for simpler, more open projects to either replace or supplement Nupedia. It seems to me wikis can be implemented practically instantly, need very little maintenance, and in general are very low-risk. They're also a potentially great source for content. So there's little downside, as far as I can determine. "

Em 1995, Jimmy Wales acompanha o "boom" da internet e deixa a carreira na finança para se tornar num empreendedor da internet. Apesar do pouco êxito, a Bomis dava a Jimmy Wales uma plataforma para desenvolver a sua paixão: o enciclopedismo.
Pelo caminho conhece Larry Sanger, ao qual se junta para um novo projecto, iniciando a criação de uma enciclopédia online. Wales contrata Sanger como editor principal da nova enciclopédia que se viria a chamar Nupedia, cujos artigos eram escritos por especialistas e revistos através de um processo formal. "A ideia era ter milhares de voluntários a escrever artigos para uma enciclopédia online em todas as línguas", disse Jimmy Wales numa entrevista à New Scientist em 2007.

Nupedia was an English-language Web-based encyclopedia whose articles were written by experts and licensed as free content. It was founded by Jimmy Wales and underwritten by Bomis, with Larry Sanger as editor-in-chief. Nupedia lasted from March 2000 until September 2003. It is mostly known now as the predecessor of Wikipedia, but Nupedia had a 7-step approval process to control content of articles before being posted, rather than live wiki-based updating. Nupedia was designed by committee, with experts to predefine the rules, and it approved only 21 articles in its first year, compared to Wikipedia posting 200 articles in the first month, and 18,000 in the first year.
Unlike Wikipedia, Nupedia was not a wiki; it was instead characterized by an extensive peer-review process, designed to make its articles of a quality comparable to that of professional encyclopedias. Nupedia wanted scholars to volunteer content. Before it ceased operating, Nupedia produced twenty-four approved articles, that completed its review process (three articles also existed in two versions of different lengths), and 74 more articles were in progress. Jimmy Wales, as founder of Wikipedia, preferred its easier posting of articles, but Larry Sanger wanted the content-controls of Nupedia and founded Citizendium instead.

/ˈdoʊnəl ˈweɪlz/; born August 7, 1966) is an American Internet entrepreneur best known as a co-founder and promoter of the online non-profit encyclopedia Wikipedia and the Wikia company. Wales was born in Huntsville, Alabama, United States, where he attended Randolph School, a university-preparatory school, then earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in finance. While in graduate school, he taught at two universities, but left before completing a PhD in order to take a job in finance and later worked as the research director of a Chicago futures and options firm. In 1996, he and two partners founded Bomis, a male-oriented web portal featuring entertainment and adult content. The company would provide the initial funding for the peer-reviewed free encyclopedia Nupedia (2000–2003) and its successor, Wikipedia.
On January 15, 2001, with Larry Sanger and others, Wales launched Wikipedia, a free, open content encyclopedia that enjoyed rapid growth and popularity, and as Wikipedia’s public profile grew, he became the project’s promoter and spokesman. He is historically cited as a co-founder of Wikipedia, though he has disputed the "co-" designation, declaring himself the sole founder. Lawrence Mark "Larry" Sanger (born July 16, 1968) is an American philosopher, co-founder of Wikipedia, and the founder of Citizendium. He grew up in Anchorage, Alaska. From an early age he has been interested in philosophy. Sanger received a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Reed College in 1991 and a Doctor of Philosophy in philosophy from Ohio State University in 2000. Most of his philosophical work has focused on epistemology, the theory of knowledge.
He has been involved with various online encyclopedia projects. He is the former editor-in-chief of Nupedia, chief organizer (2001–2002) of its successor, Wikipedia, and founding editor-in-chief of Citizendium. From his position at Nupedia, he assembled the process for article development. Sanger proposed implementing a wiki, which led directly to the creation of Wikipedia. Initially Wikipedia was a complementary project for Nupedia. He was Wikipedia's early community leader and established many of its original policies. He spearheaded an alternative wiki-based project, Citizendium.

Mais tarde, em Março de 2000, Jimmy Wales e Larry Sanger decidiram que queriam criar uma Enciclopédia online grátis, rival da Microsoft Encarta e da Enciclopédia Britânica. E Wales e Sanger deram-lhe o nome de Nupedia. Nupedia foi uma aventura sem fins lucrativos que recebia os artigos para serem revistos e só depois podiam estar disponíveis para o público. Jimmy Wales is an Internet entrepreneur and wiki enthusiast, and founder of the Wikipedia project. Jimmy was born in Huntsville, Alabama in 1966, and is a graduate of Auburn University and the University of Alabama. He worked as Research Director at Chicago Options Associates, a futures and options trading firm then located in Chicago. In the mid-1990s he started Bomis, a search portal focusing on aspects of pop culture, one of the first users of the freely licensed data of the Open Directory Project. In 1999, Jimmy had the concept of a freely distributable encyclopedia and founded Nupedia, by hiring philosopher Larry Sanger as editor-in-chief and assigning two programmers to write software for it. Nupedia failed, perhaps due to being a top-down cathedral model, as opposed to Wikipedia, which is the ultimate bazaar. After two years of working with the Nupedia concept, that team opened Wikipedia to help channel content into Nupedia; Wikipedia became an instant success, but not in the envisioned way, and Nupedia was shut down. In 2003, Jimmy set up the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization, to support Wikipedia and its sister projects. In 2004, Jimmy founded Wikia. He was appointed a fellow of Harvard Law School's Berkman Center for Internet and Society in mid-2005, and in October of 2005 joined the Board of Directors of Socialtext, a provider of wiki technology to businesses. The idea of using automated machinery beyond the printing press to build a more useful encyclopedia can be traced to Paul Otlet's book Traité de documentation (1934; Otlet also founded the Mundaneum institution, 1910), H. G. Wells' book of essays World Brain (1938) and Vannevar Bush's future vision of the microfilm based Memex in As We May Think (1945). Another milestone was Ted Nelson's hypertext design Project Xanadu, begun in 1960. With the development of the web, many people attempted to develop Internet encyclopedia projects. There was considerable resistance on the part of Nupedia's editors and reviewers to the idea of associating Nupedia with a website in the wiki format, so the new project was given the name "Wikipedia" and launched on its own domain, wikipedia.com, on January 15 (now called "Wikipedia Day" by some users). The bandwidth and server (in San Diego) were donated by Wales. Other current and past Bomis employees who have worked on the project include Tim Shell, one of the cofounders of Bomis and its current CEO, and programmer Jason Richey. The domain was eventually changed to the present wikipedia.org when the not-for-profit Wikimedia Foundation was launched as its new parent organization, with the ".org" top-level domain denoting its non-commercial nature.
In May 2001, a large number of non-English Wikipedias were launched — in Catalan, Chinese, Dutch, Esperanto, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish. These were soon joined by Arabic and Hungarian.[2] In September,[3] Polish was added, and further commitment to the multilingual provision of Wikipedia was made. At the end of the year, Afrikaans, Norwegian, and Serbo-Croatian versions were announced.

Wikipedia is a registered trademark of the not-for-profit Wikimedia Foundation, which has created a family of free-content projects that are built by user contributions.

The idea of using automated machinery beyond the printing press to build a more useful encyclopedia can be traced to Paul Otlet's book Traité de documentation (1934; Otlet also founded the Mundaneum institution, 1910), H. G. Wells' book of essays World Brain (1938) and Vannevar Bush's future vision of the microfilm based Memex in As We May Think (1945). Another milestone was Ted Nelson's hypertext design Project Xanadu, begun in 1960.
While previous encyclopedias, notably the Encyclopedia Britannica were book-based, Microsoft's Encarta published in 1993, was available on CD-ROM, and hyperlinked.
With the development of the web, many people attempted to develop Internet encyclopedia projects. An early proposal was Interpedia in 1993 by Rick Gates; ut this project died before generating any encyclopedic content. Free software exponent Richard Stallman described the usefulness of a "Free Universal Encyclopedia and Learning Resource" in 1999. is published document "aims to lay out what the free encyclopedia needs to do, what sort of freedoms it needs to give the public, and how we can get started on developing it." On 17 January 2001, two days after the start of Wikipedia, the Free Software Foundation's GNUPedia project went online, competing with Nupedia, ut today the FSF encourages people "to visit and contribute to [Wikipedia]".
Wikipedia was initially conceived as a feeder project for Nupedia, an earlier project to produce a free online encyclopedia, founded by Bomis, a web-advertising-selling firm owned by Jimmy Wales, Tim Shell and Michael E. Davis. upedia was founded upon the use of highly qualified volunteer contributors and an elaborate multi-step peer review process. Despite its mailing-list of interested editors, and the presence of a full-time editor-in-chief, Larry Sanger, a graduate philosophy student hired by Wales, he writing of content was extremely slow with only 12 articles written during the first year.
The idea of a wiki-based complement originated from a conversation between Larry Sanger and Ben Kovitz. Ben Kovitz was a computer programmer and regular on Ward Cunningham's revolutionary wiki "the WikiWikiWeb". He explained to Sanger what wikis were, at that time a difficult concept to understand, over a dinner on 2 January 2001.Wales first stated, in October 2001, that "Larry had the idea to use Wiki software", though he later claimed in December 2005 that Jeremy Rosenfeld, a Bomis employee, introduced him to the concept. Sanger thought a wiki would be a good platform to use, and proposed on the Nupedia mailing list that a wiki based upon UseModWiki (then v. 0.90) be set up as a "feeder" project for Nupedia. Under the subject "Let's make a wiki", he wrote:
" No, this is not an indecent proposal. It's an idea to add a little feature to Nupedia. Jimmy Wales thinks that many people might find the idea objectionable, but I think not. (...) As to Nupedia's use of a wiki, this is the ULTIMATE "open" and simple format for developing content. We have occasionally bandied about ideas for simpler, more open projects to either replace or supplement Nupedia. It seems to me wikis can be implemented practically instantly, need very little maintenance, and in general are very low-risk. They're also a potentially great source for content. So there's little downside, as far as I can determine. "

No one needs an introduction to Wikipedia. It's the 6th-most visited site worldwide, and 7th in the U.S. But when it comes to the company's origin, the first name on your lips is probably not Larry Sanger. Larry was hired by Jimmy Wales to edit his online encyclopedia, then called Nupedia in 2000. Sanger developed the site's ethos, started building the community -- and crucially -- adopted a little-known editing system that allowed for numerous contributors. Though rarely, if ever, recognized by Wales, it was Sanger who put the 'wiki' in Wikipedia. He coined the name, too. Today on the show, the little-known history of one of the most important innovations of our lifetimes. Jason sits down with Wikipedia cofounder Larry Sanger. Jimmy Donal "Jimbo" atau Jimmy Wales adalah pengasas Wikipedia yang telah dicadangkan oleh Larry Sanger pada 10 Januari 2010. Sebelum itu, projek utama Jimmy Wales adalah Nupedia.com, Nupedia.com adalah mengenai kandungan terbuka serta penilaian setara.
Wikipedia asalnya adalah tapak kepada orang ramai di seluruh dunia mencipta kandungan ensiklopedia dan kandungan yang di isi itu akan di sunting oleh Nupedia dan di buat penilaian. Kini, kira-kira 16 juta artikel terkandung di dalam Wikipedia dan ia
adalah sumbangan dari orang ramai di seluruh dunia. Pertumbuhan Wikipedia yang begitu pesat menyebabnya Wikipedia menjadi projek utama, dan Nupedia kemudian
tersimpan. Jimmy Wales yang amat taksub dengan ilmu berpendapat ilmu
adalah tunjang utama untuk bahagia. Beliau dilahirkan di
Alabama dan menerima pendidikan awal di sekolah persendirian
iaitu di House of Learning. Jimmy Wales menghabiskan banyak
masa untuk membaca Ensiklopedia Dunia pada waktu itu. Dengan
kehidupan yang miskin, beliau telah menerima dua ijazah dari
Universiti Auburn dan Universiti Alabama. Pada pertengahan 2003, Jimmy Wales menubuhkan Yayasan Wikimedia. Langkah ini bukan sahaja dapat melegakan Jimmy
Wales daripada sebarang beban untuk menyokong pembiayaan

Apesar do pouco êxito, a Bomis dava a Jimmy Wales uma plataforma para desenvolver a sua paixão: o enciclopedismo.
Pelo caminho conhece Larry Sanger, ao qual se junta para um novo projecto, iniciando a criação de uma enciclopédia online. Wales contrata Sanger como editor principal da nova enciclopédia que se viria a chamar Nupedia, cujos artigos eram escritos por especialistas e revistos através de um processo formal. "A ideia era ter milhares de voluntários a escrever artigos para uma enciclopédia online em todas as línguas", disse Jimmy Wales numa entrevista à New Scientist em 2007.
Em Janeiro de 2001, o programador informático Ben Kovitz sugeriu a adopção de um conceito de enciclopédia "livre" e "comunitária" para melhorar a Nupedia, sugestão a que Larry Sanger e Jimmy Wales aderiram imediatamente, nascendo assim a Wikipédia. Esta enciclopédia "wiki" (termo originário do idioma havaiano que significa "rápido") tinha inicialmente o propósito de apoiar a Nupedia.
No início, nem Jimmy Wales nem Larry Sanger sabiam o que esperar desta enciclopédia colaborativa. A Wikipédia cresceu exponencialmente e foi indexada aos motores de busca na web. Até ao final de 2001, o site já tinha 20 mil artigos em 18 idiomas diferentes. A Nupédia e a Wikipédia coexistiram até 2003, altura em que os servidores da primeira foram retirados e o seu texto incorporado na Wikipédia. No ano seguinte, Jimmy Wales deu uma entrevista ao jornal britânico The Guardian onde o confirmou. "Isso é verdade, não sou milionário. E então?
