Story
The documentary film My Beloved Country by director Saskia Vredeveld takes us back to the early 1990's in South Africa. It is a provocative look from within at Afrikaner extremists who, in 1991, clung to the belief that they were the chosen "super race" of Africa. With the demise of white rule, many of these Boers lived in fear. Some had banded into paramilitary groups, such as Eugene Terre'Blanche's Afrikaner Resistance Movement, which claimed wide support within the South African army and police. They were preparing for an armed showdown with the new government.

The Zuid Afrikaanse Republic also names Transvaal and the Republic of the Orange Free State, also named the Vrystaat. This flag parade was filmed at the official opening of the Majuba Festival on 23 February 2013. Brittan declared these two republics as free states after the battle that happened on top of the hill Majuba, in the background, on 27 February 1881. Brittan then turned its back and took the two free republics back after the second Anglo Boer War from 1899 to 1902, were 27000 Boer-Afrikaner woman and children were killed by England in concentration camps. Brittan never paid compensation or even begged forgiveness for stealing the Boer-Afrikaner republicks. The battle of Majuba marked the date that started the fall of the Brittan Empire.

This film explores South Africa's apartheid policy, focusing on issues such as race relations, political practices, and segregated dwellings in the 1950's.
Apartheid (from Afrikaans "the state of being apart") was a system of racial segregation enforced through legislation by the National Party (NP) governments, who were the ruling party from 1948 to 1994, of South Africa, under which the rights of the majority black inhabitants of South Africa were curtailed and white supremacy and Afrikaner minority rule was maintained. Apartheid was developed after World War II by the Afrikaner-dominated National Party and Broederbond organizations and was practiced also in South West Africa, which was administered by South Africa under a League of Nations mandate (revoked in 1966 via United Nations Resolution 2145), until it gained independence as Namibia 1990.
Racial segregation in South Africa began in colonial times under Dutch and British rule. However, apartheid as an official policy was introduced following the general election of 1948. New legislation classified inhabitants into four racial groups ("native", "white", "colored", and "Asian"), and residential areas were segregated, sometimes by means of forced removals. Non-white political representation was completely abolished in 1970, and starting in that year black people were deprived of their citizenship, legally becoming citizens of one of ten tribally based self-governing homelands called Bantustans, four of which became nominally independent states. The government segregated education, medical care, beaches, and other public services, and provided black people with services inferior to those of white people.
Apartheid sparked significant internal resistance and violence as well as a long arms and trade embargo against South Africa. Since the 1950s, a series of popular uprisings and protests were met with the banning of opposition and imprisoning of anti-apartheid leaders. As unrest spread and became more effective and militarized, state organizations responded with repression and violence. This, along with the sanctions placed on South Africa by the West made it increasingly difficult for the government to maintain the regime.
Reforms to apartheid in the 1980s failed to quell the mounting opposition, and in 1990 President Frederik Willem de Klerk began negotiations to end apartheid, culminating in multi-racial democratic elections in 1994, which were won by the African National Congress under Nelson Mandela. The vestiges of apartheid still shape South African politics and society. The Apartheid Legislation
The Apartheid Legislation in South Africa was a series of different laws and acts which were to help the apartheid-government to enforce the segregation of different races and cement the power and the dominance by the Whites, of substantially European descent, over the other race groups. Starting in 1948, the Nationalist Government in South Africa enacted laws to define and enforce segregation. With the enactment of apartheid laws in 1948, racial discrimination was institutionalized. The effect of the legislation was invariably favorable to the whites and detrimental to the non-white racial groups namely the Colored's, Indians and Blacks.
What makes South Africa's apartheid era different from segregation in other countries is the systematic way in which the National Party, which came into power in 1948, formalized the Apartheid rules through the law.

Mandela
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (born 18 July 1918) is a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative, multiracial election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalized racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation. Politically an African nationalist and democratic socialist, he served as the President of the African National Congress from 1991 to 1997. Although Nelson Mandela preached tolerance and reconciliation, there are still divisions within South Africa. Some have warned that without his presence those divisions may spark violence.
But even members in a poor Afrikaner enclave appear cautiously optimistic about their future.
"At the end of the day we should listen to what Mandela taught us. And he was like always letting us join together and not be racist. And we must take that example. And people must take that example all over and just try and follow it," said resident Sandra Batha.
When Mandela was elected the country's first black president in 1994 many Afrikaners were uneasy about life under a black-majority government after decades of white rule.
But his talk of a united South Africa has commanded respect among wealthier Afrikaners such as Jan Bosman, Chief Secretary of the rights group Afrikanerbond:
"There are certain things wrong in this country at the moment and we must fix it. As Afrikaners, and I speak from the Afrikaner community we are more than willing to assist and help build this country and make it what it can be. I think. I think that is what Mr. Mandela wanted."
But some Afrikaners say they just want to be left alone with their own culture and language. They believe as long as they are law abiding they should not need permission to act as they do -

Afrikaners (including the Boer subgroup ) are a Germanic ethnic group in Southern Africa descended from Dutch (including Flemish), French and German settlers whose native tongue is Afrikaans: a Germanic language which derives primarily from 17th century Dutch, and a variety of other languages.
Their ancestors were Dutch Calvinists, with smaller numbers of Frisians, English, Germans and French Huguenots, and with minor numbers of other European groups (such as Dutch Jews, Scandinavians, Portuguese, Greeks, Italians, Spaniards, Scots, Irish, Polish).
Most Afrikaner families have between 5% and 7% non-white ancestry, such as Khoi African, Indonesian and Indian, as the early Dutch settlement at the Cape allowed inter-racial marriage. During the Apartheid era, race classification was based on appearance and there were many borderline cases.
South Africans of British descent are considered a separate ethnic group from Afrikaners, and their first language is English.
The term Afrikaner as used in the 20th and 21st century context refers to all white Afrikaans-speaking people, i.e. those of the larger Cape Dutch origin and of the smaller Boer origin, who are descended from European settlers who first arrived in the Cape of Good Hope during the period of administration (1652 – 1795) by the Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC).

Bok van Blerk, born Louis Pepler March 30, 1978, is a South African musician who sings in Afrikaans. He became famous in 2006 for his rendition of "De la Rey" by Sean Else and Johan Vorster.
Van Blerk went to Hoërskool Die Wilgers (school) in Pretoria. After his study, he spent time working abroad.
In March 2006, Bok van Blerk and the Mossies released the album Jy praat nog steeds my taal (You still speak my language). The same album was rereleased in October 2006 under the name De La Rey and solely credited to Bok van Blerk. According to Van Blerk "and the Mossies" was removed because his fellow singer, Tanya van Graan, was too busy modelling. Van Blerk is accompanied by Jaco Mans (and occasionally Manie van Niekerk) on lead guitar, Francois Coetzee on bass guitar, and Nathan Smit on the drums.

Some have warned that without his presence those divisions may spark violence. But even members in a poor Afrikaner enclave appear cautiously optimistic about their future. "At the end of the day we should listen to what Mandela taught us. And he was like always letting us join together and not be racist. And we must take that example. And people must take that example all over and just try and follow it," said resident Sandra Batha. When Mandela was elected the country's first black president in 1994 many Afrikaners were uneasy about life under a black-majority government after decades of white rule. But his talk of a united South Africa has commanded respect among wealthier Afrikaners such as Jan Bosman, Chief Secretary of the rights group Afrikanerbond: "There are certain things wrong in this country at the moment and we must fix it. As Afrikaners, and I speak from the Afrikaner community we are more than willing to assist and help build this country and make it what it can be. I think. I think that is what Mr. Mandela wanted." But some Afrikaners say they just want to be left alone with their own culture and language. After the bad guys come looking for the stolen diamonds and kidnap Rene, all of her fantasies come true as Ernest has to go to Africa to rescue her.

Apartheid (from Afrikaans "the state of being apart") was a system of racial segregation enforced through legislation by the National Party (NP) governments, who were the ruling party from 1948 to 1994, of South Africa, under which the rights of the majority black inhabitants of South Africa were curtailed and white supremacy and Afrikaner minority rule was maintained. Apartheid was developed after World War II by the Afrikaner-dominated National Party and Broederbond organizations and was practiced also in South West Africa, which was administered by South Africa under a League of Nations mandate (revoked in 1966 via United Nations Resolution 2145), until it gained independence as Namibia 1990.
Racial segregation in South Africa began in colonial times under Dutch and British rule. However, apartheid as an official policy was introduced following the general election of 1948. New legislation classified inhabitants into four racial groups ("native", "white", "colored", and "Asian"), and residential areas were segregated, sometimes by means of forced removals. Non-white political representation was completely abolished in 1970, and starting in that year black people were deprived of their citizenship, legally becoming citizens of one of ten tribally based self-governing homelands called Bantustans, four of which became nominally independent states. The government segregated education, medical care, beaches, and other public services, and provided black people with services inferior to those of white people.
Apartheid sparked significant internal resistance and violence as well as a long arms and trade embargo against South Africa. Since the 1950s, a series of popular uprisings and protests were met with the banning of opposition and imprisoning of anti-apartheid leaders. As unrest spread and became more effective and militarized, state organizations responded with repression and violence. This, along with the sanctions placed on South Africa by the West made it increasingly difficult for the government to maintain the regime.
Reforms to apartheid in the 1980s failed to quell the mounting opposition, and in 1990 President Frederik Willem de Klerk began negotiations to end apartheid, culminating in multi-racial democratic elections in 1994, which were won by the African National Congress under Nelson Mandela. The vestiges of apartheid still shape South African politics and society. The Apartheid Legislation
The Apartheid Legislation in South Africa was a series of different laws and acts which were to help the apartheid-government to enforce the segregation of different races and cement the power and the dominance by the Whites, of substantially European descent, over the other race groups. Starting in 1948, the Nationalist Government in South Africa enacted laws to define and enforce segregation. With the enactment of apartheid laws in 1948, racial discrimination was institutionalized. The effect of the legislation was invariably favorable to the whites and detrimental to the non-white racial groups namely the Colored's, Indians and Blacks.
What makes South Africa's apartheid era different from segregation in other countries is the systematic way in which the National Party, which came into power in 1948, formalized the Apartheid rules through the law.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (born 18 July 1918) is a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative, multiracial election. Politically an African nationalist and democratic socialist, he served as the President of the African National Congress from 1991 to 1997. Apartheid was developed after World War II by the Afrikaner-dominated National Party and Broederbond organizations and was practiced also in South West Africa, which was administered by South Africa under a League of Nations mandate (revoked in 1966 via United Nations Resolution 2145), until it gained independence as Namibia 1990.
Racial segregation in South Africa began in colonial times under Dutch and British rule. However, apartheid as an official policy was introduced following the general election of 1948. New legislation classified inhabitants into four racial groups ("native", "white", "colored", and "Asian"), and residential areas were segregated, sometimes by means of forced removals. Non-white political representation was completely abolished in 1970, and starting in that year black people were deprived of their citizenship, legally becoming citizens of one of ten tribally based self-governing homelands called Bantustans, four of which became nominally independent states. The government segregated education, medical care, beaches, and other public services, and provided black people with services inferior to those of white people.
Apartheid sparked significant internal resistance and violence as well as a long arms and trade embargo against South Africa. Since the 1950s, a series of popular uprisings and protests were met with the banning of opposition and imprisoning of anti-apartheid leaders. As unrest spread and became more effective and militarized, state organizations responded with repression and violence. This, along with the sanctions placed on South Africa by the West made it increasingly difficult for the government to maintain the regime.
Reforms to apartheid in the 1980s failed to quell the mounting opposition, and in 1990 President Frederik Willem de Klerk began negotiations to end apartheid, culminating in multi-racial democratic elections in 1994, which were won by the African National Congress under Nelson Mandela. The vestiges of apartheid still shape South African politics and society. The Apartheid Legislation
The Apartheid Legislation in South Africa was a series of different laws and acts which were to help the apartheid-government to enforce the segregation of different races and cement the power and the dominance by the Whites, of substantially European descent, over the other race groups. Starting in 1948, the Nationalist Government in South Africa enacted laws to define and enforce segregation. With the enactment of apartheid laws in 1948, racial discrimination was institutionalized. The effect of the legislation was invariably favorable to the whites and detrimental to the non-white racial groups namely the Colored's, Indians and Blacks.
What makes South Africa's apartheid era different from segregation in other countries is the systematic way in which the National Party, which came into power in 1948, formalized the Apartheid rules through the law.

Mandela
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (born 18 July 1918) is a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative, multiracial election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalized racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation. Politically an African nationalist and democratic socialist, he served as the President of the African National Congress from 1991 to 1997. Although Nelson Mandela preached tolerance and reconciliation, there are still divisions within South Africa. Some have warned that without his presence those divisions may spark violence.
But even members in a poor Afrikaner enclave appear cautiously optimistic about their future.
"At the end of the day we should listen to what Mandela taught us. And he was like always letting us join together and not be racist. And we must take that example. And people must take that example all over and just try and follow it," said resident Sandra Batha.
When Mandela was elected the country's first black president in 1994 many Afrikaners were uneasy about life under a black-majority government after decades of white rule.
But his talk of a united South Africa has commanded respect among wealthier Afrikaners such as Jan Bosman, Chief Secretary of the rights group Afrikanerbond:
"There are certain things wrong in this country at the moment and we must fix it. As Afrikaners, and I speak from the Afrikaner community we are more than willing to assist and help build this country and make it what it can be. I think. I think that is what Mr. Mandela wanted."
But some Afrikaners say they just want to be left alone with their own culture and language. They believe as long as they are law abiding they should not need permission to act as they do -

18 years after Apartheid, there are still small Afrikaans communities that are willing to fight to get back their land. Four times a year, an Afrikaans group called Die Kommandokorps (formed to "protect" the Afrikaaner people) runs a military training camp near Rustenberg, South Africa. The camp aims to train young, white Afrikaans males to defend themselves, and to keep the spirit of Afrikaans nationalism alive in a new generation. It is also billed as a place where boys will learn to defend their families' farms against attacks (the murder rate of South African farmers is now more than 300 per 100 000, and most attacks are senseless and violent). The old orange, white and blue flag is raised high above the camps and the new South African flag is used as a doormat, as the boys enter the mess hall to sing "Die Stem", the old South African national anthem.

This film follows the journey of four white Afrikaans boys. For nine, long and grueling days they will be trained to adopt the ways of the old South African regime. They will learn how to defend their families against the criminals that threaten their farms and their lives; "the blacks". Too young to understand the severity of the racial divide of Apartheid, the boys come into the camp wanting to believe in the rainbow nation, but in nine days they are trained to believe in the ideology of exclusive Afrikaans nationalism.

18 years after Apartheid, there are still small Afrikaans communities that are willing to fight to get back their land. Four times a year, an Afrikaans group called Die Kommandokorps (formed to "protect" the Afrikaaner people) runs a military training camp near Rustenberg, South Africa. The camp aims to train young, white Afrikaans males to defend themselves, and to keep the spirit of Afrikaans nationalism alive in a new generation. It is also billed as a place where boys will learn to defend their families' farms against attacks (the murder rate of South African farmers is now more than 300 per 100 000, and most attacks are senseless and violent). The boys are given the same military training that conscripts were given before 1994, during Apartheid. The old orange, white and blue flag is raised high above the camps and the new South African flag is used as a doormat, as the boys enter the mess hall to sing "Die Stem", the old South African national anthem.
