In which John Green teaches you about China's Revolutions. While the rest of the world was off having a couple of World Wars, China was busily uprooting the dynastic system that had ruled there for millennia. Most revolutions have some degree of tumult associated with them, but China's 20th century revolutions were REALLY disruptive. In 1911 and 1912, Chinese nationalists brought 3000 years of dynastic rule to an end. China plunged into chaos as warlords staked out regions of the country for themselves. The nationalists and communists joined forces briefly to bring the nation back together under the Chinese Republic, and then they quickly split and started fighting the Chinese Civil War. The fight between nationalists and communists went on for decades, and was interrupted by an alliance to fight the invading Japanese during World War II. After the World War II ended, the Chinese Civil War was back on. Mao and the communists were ultimately victorious, and Chiang Kai-Shek ended up in Taiwan. And then it got weird. Mao spent years repeatedly trying to purify the Communist Party and build up the new People's Republic of China with Rectifications, Anti Campaigns, Five Year Plans. the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution. These had mixed results, to say the least. John will cover all this and more in this week's Crash Course World History.

Sichuan Food in Chengdu is so spicy. The Chinese food here in Sichuan is different from the rest of the country. Here, the food in Chengdu is much spicier and uses a lot of Sichuan peppercorns as well. Join me as I sample 7 nice dishes at a communist restaurant in Chengdu!

This restaurant name is 人民食堂 "Renmin shitang", which means People's cafeteria, and is all in old Chinese communist style interior. It's a true sight to see. The servers are all wearing old Chinese communism uniforms and the food was delicious to say the least!

The Communist Manifesto - FULL Audio Book - by Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels - The Communist Manifesto was conceived as an outline of the basic beliefs of the Communist movement. The authors believed that the European Powers were universally afraid of the nascent movement, and were condemning as "communist," people or activities that did not actually conform to what the Communists believed. This Manifesto, then, became a manual for their beliefs.
In it we find Marx and Engel's rehearsal of the idea that Capital has stolen away the work of the artisan and peasant by building up factories to produce goods cheaply. The efficiency of Capital depends, then, on the wage laborers who staff the factories and how little they will accept in order to have work. This concentrates power and money in a Bourgeois class that profits from the disunity of workers (Proletarians), who only receive a subsistence wage.
If workers unite in a class struggle against the bourgeois, using riot and strikes as weapons, they will eventually overthrow the bourgeois and replace them as a ruling class. Communists further believe in and lay out a system of reforms to transform into a classless, stateless society, thus distinguishing themselves from various flavors of Socialism, which would be content to have workers remain the ruling class after the revolution.
The Manifesto caused a huge amount of discussion for its support for a forcible overthrow of the existing politics and society. (Summary by Mark F. Smith)

Communism (from Latin communis - common, universal) is a revolutionary socialist movement to create a classless, moneyless, and stateless social order structured upon common ownership of the means of production, as well as a social, political and economic ideology that aims at the establishment of this social order. This movement, in its Marxist-Leninist interpretations, significantly influenced the history of the 20th century, which saw intense rivalry between the "socialist world" (socialist states ruled by Communist parties) and the "western world" (countries with market economies), culminating in the Cold War between the Eastern bloc and the "Free World".[citation needed]
In Marxist theory, pure communism is a specific stage of historical development that inevitably emerges from the development of the productive forces that leads to a superabundance of material wealth, allowing for distribution based on need and social relations based on freely associated individuals. The exact definition of communism varies, and it is often mistakenly, in general political discourse, used interchangeably with socialism; however, Marxist theory contends that socialism is just a transitional stage on the road to communism. Leninism adds to Marxism the notion of a vanguard party to lead the proletarian revolution and to secure all political power after the revolution for the working class, for the development of universal class consciousness and worker participation, in a transitional stage between capitalism and socialism.

Karl Heinrich Marx (5 May 1818 – 14 March 1883) was a German philosopher, economist, sociologist, historian, journalist, and revolutionary socialist. His ideas played a significant role in the development of social science and the socialist political movement. He published various books during his lifetime, with the most notable being The Communist Manifesto (1848) and Capital (1867–1894); some of his works were co-written with his friend and fellow German revolutionary socialist, Friedrich Engels.
Born into a wealthy middle class family in Trier, formerly in Prussian Rhineland now called Rhineland-Palatinate, Marx studied at both the University of Bonn and the University of Berlin, where he became interested in the philosophical ideas of the Young Hegelians. In 1836, he became engaged to Jenny von Westphalen, marrying her in 1843. After his studies, he wrote for a radical newspaper in Cologne, and began to work out his theory of dialectical materialism. Moving to Paris in 1843, he began writing for other radical newspapers. He met Engels in Paris, and the two men worked together on a series of books. Exiled to Brussels, he became a leading figure of the Communist League, before moving back to Cologne, where he founded his own newspaper. In 1849 he was exiled again and moved to London together with his wife and children. In London, where the family was reduced to poverty, Marx continued writing and formulating his theories about the nature of society and how he believed it could be improved, and also campaigned for socialism—he became a significant figure in the International Workingmen's Association.

The Communist Manifesto - FULL Audio Book - by Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels - The Communist Manifesto was conceived as an outline of the basic beliefs of the Communist movement. The authors believed that the European Powers were universally afraid of the nascent movement, and were condemning as "communist," people or activities that did not actually conform to what the Communists believed. This Manifesto, then, became a manual for their beliefs. In it we find Marx and Engel's rehearsal of the idea that Capital has stolen away the work of the artisan and peasant by building up factories to produce goods cheaply. The efficiency of Capital depends, then, on the wage laborers who staff the factories and how little they will accept in order to have work. This concentrates power and money in a Bourgeois class that profits from the disunity of workers (Proletarians), who only receive a subsistence wage. If workers unite in a class struggle against the bourgeois, using riot and strikes as weapons, they will eventually overthrow the bourgeois and replace them as a ruling class. Communists further believe in and lay out a system of reforms to transform into a classless, stateless society, thus distinguishing themselves from various flavors of Socialism, which would be content to have workers remain the ruling class after the revolution. The Manifesto caused a huge amount of discussion for its support for a forcible overthrow of the existing politics and society. (Summary by Mark F. I watched this on another site and noticed it wasn't on youtube. Turns out it's pretty hard to find footage of Romania during communism. This documentary, despite the poor quality, is definitely worth a watch, especially if you are Romanian and lived in those times or had relatives who did. It shows how life was for a lot of people during the Ceaușescu era. It also shows footage of the execution of him and his wife, and small glimpses of the revolution, but mainly focuses on the timeline before that. Just so you know it's a 3 part series and the first 2 parts are about Russia and Czech Republic, this one focuses on Romania which seems the hardest to find so I'm sharing it here. The Lost World of Communism - Part 3 - Romanian Revolution & Life in Communist Romania
I watched this on another site and noticed it wasn't on youtube. Turns out it's pretty hard to find footage of Romania during communism. This documentary, despite the poor quality, is definitely worth a watch, especially if you are Romanian and lived in those times or had relatives who did. It shows how life was for a lot of people during the Ceaușescu era. It also shows footage of the execution of him and his wife, and small glimpses of the revolution, but mainly focuses on the timeline before that. Just so you know it's a 3 part series and the first 2 parts are about Russia and Czech Republic, this one focuses on Romania which seems the hardest to find so I'm sharing it here. My thoughts and reflections after visiting Xiamen, China in March 2014. Please note that this is not designed to be a comprehensive overview of the Chinese economic system. Many important facts were omitted. Most of the communist policies in the mid-1900s ended in disaster. The creation of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and freer markets in 1979 significantly improved China's economy. Although run by the Communist Party, today's China is definitely a mixed economy. Like I said in the video, don't assume that everything is perfect. Civil liberties are lacking and there are still misguided government polices. The most obvious is the growing housing bubble. After the World War II ended, the Chinese Civil War was back on. Mao and the communists were ultimately victorious, and Chiang Kai-Shek ended up in Taiwan. And then it got weird. Mao spent years repeatedly trying to purify the Communist Party and build up the new People's Republic of China with Rectifications, Anti Campaigns, Five Year Plans. the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution. These had mixed results, to say the least. John will cover all this and more in this week's Crash Course World History.

Sichuan Food in Chengdu is so spicy. The Chinese food here in Sichuan is different from the rest of the country. Here, the food in Chengdu is much spicier and uses a lot of Sichuan peppercorns as well. Join me as I sample 7 nice dishes at a communist restaurant in Chengdu!

This restaurant name is 人民食堂 "Renmin shitang", which means People's cafeteria, and is all in old Chinese communist style interior. It's a true sight to see. The servers are all wearing old Chinese communism uniforms and the food was delicious to say the least!

The Communist Manifesto - FULL Audio Book - by Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels - The Communist Manifesto was conceived as an outline of the basic beliefs of the Communist movement. The authors believed that the European Powers were universally afraid of the nascent movement, and were condemning as "communist," people or activities that did not actually conform to what the Communists believed. This Manifesto, then, became a manual for their beliefs.
In it we find Marx and Engel's rehearsal of the idea that Capital has stolen away the work of the artisan and peasant by building up factories to produce goods cheaply. The efficiency of Capital depends, then, on the wage laborers who staff the factories and how little they will accept in order to have work. This concentrates power and money in a Bourgeois class that profits from the disunity of workers (Proletarians), who only receive a subsistence wage.
If workers unite in a class struggle against the bourgeois, using riot and strikes as weapons, they will eventually overthrow the bourgeois and replace them as a ruling class. Communists further believe in and lay out a system of reforms to transform into a classless, stateless society, thus distinguishing themselves from various flavors of Socialism, which would be content to have workers remain the ruling class after the revolution.
The Manifesto caused a huge amount of discussion for its support for a forcible overthrow of the existing politics and society. (Summary by Mark F. Smith)

I watched this on another site and noticed it wasn't on youtube. Turns out it's pretty hard to find footage of Romania during communism. This documentary, despite the poor quality, is definitely worth a watch, especially if you are Romanian and lived in those times or had relatives who did.
It shows how life was for a lot of people during the Ceaușescu era. It also shows footage of the execution of him and his wife, and small glimpses of the revolution, but mainly focuses on the timeline before that.
Just so you know it's a 3 part series and the first 2 parts are about Russia and Czech Republic, this one focuses on Romania which seems the hardest to find so I'm sharing it here. Enjoy

Since this video's release, people have felt inclined to do one of two things - either bash me for being Communist -OR- praise me for being a fellow comrade. Let me be perfectly clear that this video does not reveal my standpoint on Communism. Instead, it parodies the American mindset on Russian Communism.
You should know that this video was NOT made to viewed by tens of thousands of people. When I was in high school, I had the chance to make videos that would be viewed by the entire student body. Since there was no real guidelines as to what I should make, I thought it would be funny to make a McCarthy style documentary warning students and faculty about the dangers of a particular cartoon that nobody even watches anymore. Hearing the USSR National Anthem boom throughout a public American campus was perhaps one of the funniest moments of my high school years. I suppose the message I'm trying to get across to the viewers is this; take this video with a grain of salt - the whole six minutes and thirty seconds is one big long joke anyways. Watch it for what it's worth.
By the way, I'm not Russian nor have I ever been to Russia. I do have an uncanny taste for vodka though.

My thoughts and reflections after visiting Xiamen, China in March 2014. Please note that this is not designed to be a comprehensive overview of the Chinese economic system. Many important facts were omitted.
Most of the communist policies in the mid-1900s ended in disaster. The creation of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and freer markets in 1979 significantly improved China's economy. Although run by the Communist Party, today's China is definitely a mixed economy. Like I said in the video, don't assume that everything is perfect. Civil liberties are lacking and there are still misguided government polices. The most obvious is the growing housing bubble.
I'm not sure where China will go in the future, but moving toward freer markets is a step in the right direction. Central planning was getting them nowhere.

After being kicked out from Serbia in December 1941 and after unsuccessfull attacks on Serbia in October 1943, Tito`s communist started looking for Allied "air support". Official (communist) history is minimising this bombing and pointing that it was "againist German targets", but actually German objects had very small damage and only few hundred German soldiers died (mostly those who were on train stations), while cities and villages in Serbia were reduced to rubble. Anglo-Americans have bombed civilian buildings, markets, refugees` homes, churches, kinder-gardens and hospitals. They have even dropped toys filled with explosives, so the children would take it and die in explosions. More than 50.000 Serbian civilians died under Allied bombs. The first Allied bombing of Belgrade took place on Orthodox Easter 16th April 1944. On the first day of bombing of Belgrade "Allies" have dropped 2.500 tones of incendiary bombs. This was anglo-american reward for stupid Serbs who made state coup on 27th March 1941 againist government who made Pact with Germany and who were fighting for Allied cause 1941-1944. Belgrade was bombed 11 times, Nis 15 times, Podgorica 72 times. On the other hand, Tito and his communists never ordered such bombing of croatian cities who were almost untouched. To make this tragedy even worse, pro-british ressistance leader and political moron Draza Mihailovic was saving downed anglo-american pilots and evacuated them from the airport in village Pranjani.
Even after communist conquer of Serbia, Allied bombings have continued, this time on Serbian Nationalist forces who were retreating to Bosnia during the winter 1944/45 and Serbian Nationalist forces in Slovenia in 1945.

Anyways, there are plenty of people out there who know that Jones is a communist and I would like to take the opportunity to make it as easy as possible for any and all to prove that he is a communist. A good place to start is this: "Where does Van Jones come from?" If you have watched enough White House videos with Valerie Jarrett, you will know that Jones comes from Oakland. "What did Van Jones do while he was out in Oakland?" He was a member of a group called STORM. Their manifesto is up on You Tube chapter by chapter, I encourage you to listen to it.
