The Unknown War
The greatest battles of World War II, the most colossal encounters of military force,
the most devastating human losses which the modern world has ever seen, occurred on Russian soil during
1941-1945, on a battlefield that is unknown to most Americans. The conflict between Hitler's Germany and
Stalin's Russia claimed more than 30 million lives.
On the early morning of June 22, 1941, the Nazi Wehrmacht had amassed 4.2 million crack troops along a front
that stretched for 1,800 miles, and Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union began. The Nazi
high command was extremely confident, expecting the total collapse of Stalin's Russia within six weeks.
In reality, The Unknown War raged on for nearly four years. Before it finished, the Nazis and Soviets fought
the single greatest campaign in military history. The Unknown War covers that period of history beginning in
June 1941, when Germany launched its surprise attack on Russia, through to the end of the war.
The Unknown War was a landmark television series, detailing the drama of the Eastern European front during
World War II. Academy Award Winner Burt Lancaster hosts the 20 part series. Film footage from Soviet archives
comprises a major portion of the series, supplemented by film from both the United States and British archives.
Burt Lancaster spent three weeks in eight cities in Russia, for location filming.
The Unknown War was made as a counter to the deliberate distortions in the Anglo-American series The World At War,
which chose to give as much coverage to the US in Italy as it did to the Red Army at war from the Arctic to the
Black Sea. So blatant was the politically motivated distortion in The World At War that the Soviet authorities
ultimately refused to cooperate in its production. Instead they set out to make a documentary series of their own
that would tell the real story of the War in the East.
The Eastern (Russian) Front of WW2 has been side-lined in the Western media for decades, reduced to just "one aspect"
of the War, if it is even mentioned at all. Certainly there is never any recognition given to the fact that it was the
main, decisive arena of WW2, the scene of a titanic struggle that, at the cost of 30 million Soviet lives, saved the
world from fascism.
Made by the USSR's Central Documentary Film Studios, The Unknown War dealt exhaustively with the war on the Soviet front.
Narrated by Burt Lancaster, who also appeared on camera, the series featured interviews with many participants from numerous
battles, partisan campaigns and SS massacres. It showed the destruction, the sacrifice and the heroism, and also the pride
in their colossal achievement. As Stalin said in one of his communications to Churchill, "Hitler has 25 divisions in
North Africa; I have 250 in the Soviet Union."
Unfortunately, the Western TV networks and distributors who bought The Unknown War for telecast were not prepared to mount
the kind of publicity campaigns needed to overcome 30 years of lies, distortion and simple suppression of the facts about
the Soviet role in WW2.

Leonard Norman Cohen, CC GOQ (born 21 September 1934) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, poet, and novelist. His work often explores religion, isolation, sexuality, and interpersonal relationships. Cohen has been inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. He is also a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honour.
While giving the speech at Cohen's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 10 March 2008, Lou Reed described Cohen as belonging to the "highest and most influential echelon of songwriters."
Cohen was born on 21 September 1934 in Westmount, Montreal, Quebec, into a middle-class Jewish family. He attended Roslyn Elementary School. His mother, Marsha Klinitsky, of Lithuanian Jewish ancestry, emigrated from Lithuania while his great-grandfather emigrated from Poland. He grew up in Westmount on the Island of Montreal. His grandfather was Lyon Cohen, founding president of the Canadian Jewish Congress. His father, Nathan Cohen, who owned a substantial Montreal clothing store, died when Cohen was nine years old. On the topic of being a Kohen, Cohen has said that, "I had a very Messianic childhood." He told Richard Goldstein in 1967. "I was told I was a descendant of Aaron, the high priest." Cohen attended Westmount High School, beginning in 1948 where he was involved with the Student Council and studied music and poetry. He became especially interested in the poetry of Federico Garcia Lorca. As a teenager, he learned to play the guitar, and formed a country-folk group called the Buckskin Boys. Although he initially played a regular acoustic guitar as a teenager, he soon switched to playing a classical guitar after meeting a young Spanish flamenco guitar player who taught him "a few chords and some flamenco."

Au début de la Première Guerre mondiale l'écrivain Guiliarovski en écrit le texte. Puis celui-ci a connu plusieurs variantes (sous des titres différents) durant la Première Guerre mondiale. The Unknown War
The greatest battles of World War II, the most colossal encounters of military force,
the most devastating human losses which the modern world has ever seen, occurred on Russian soil during
1941-1945, on a battlefield that is unknown to most Americans. The conflict between Hitler's Germany and
Stalin's Russia claimed more than 30 million lives.
On the early morning of June 22, 1941, the Nazi Wehrmacht had amassed 4.2 million crack troops along a front
that stretched for 1,800 miles, and Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union began. The Nazi
high command was extremely confident, expecting the total collapse of Stalin's Russia within six weeks.
In reality, The Unknown War raged on for nearly four years. Before it finished, the Nazis and Soviets fought
the single greatest campaign in military history. The Unknown War covers that period of history beginning in
June 1941, when Germany launched its surprise attack on Russia, through to the end of the war.
The Unknown War was a landmark television series, detailing the drama of the Eastern European front during
World War II. Academy Award Winner Burt Lancaster hosts the 20 part series. Film footage from Soviet archives
comprises a major portion of the series, supplemented by film from both the United States and British archives.
Burt Lancaster spent three weeks in eight cities in Russia, for location filming.
The Unknown War was made as a counter to the deliberate distortions in the Anglo-American series The World At War,
which chose to give as much coverage to the US in Italy as it did to the Red Army at war from the Arctic to the
Black Sea. So blatant was the politically motivated distortion in The World At War that the Soviet authorities
ultimately refused to cooperate in its production. Instead they set out to make a documentary series of their own
that would tell the real story of the War in the East.
The Eastern (Russian) Front of WW2 has been side-lined in the Western media for decades, reduced to just "one aspect"
of the War, if it is even mentioned at all. Certainly there is never any recognition given to the fact that it was the
main, decisive arena of WW2, the scene of a titanic struggle that, at the cost of 30 million Soviet lives, saved the
world from fascism.
Made by the USSR's Central Documentary Film Studios, The Unknown War dealt exhaustively with the war on the Soviet front.
Narrated by Burt Lancaster, who also appeared on camera, the series featured interviews with many participants from numerous
battles, partisan campaigns and SS massacres. It showed the destruction, the sacrifice and the heroism, and also the pride
in their colossal achievement. As Stalin said in one of his communications to Churchill, "Hitler has 25 divisions in
North Africa; I have 250 in the Soviet Union."
Unfortunately, the Western TV networks and distributors who bought The Unknown War for telecast were not prepared to mount
the kind of publicity campaigns needed to overcome 30 years of lies, distortion and simple suppression of the facts about
the Soviet role in WW2.

Née le 30 octobre 1917 à Saint-Pétersbourg, pendant la Révolution russe au cours de laquelle son père fut fusillé, Anna Betoulinsky quitte la Russie pour la France au début des années 1920 avec sa mère, sa sœur et sa nounou. À l'âge de treize ans la nounou lui offre une guitare. Ce cadeau dont elle ne se séparera jamais va bouleverser sa vie.
Quelques années plus tard, elle prend le nom d'Anna Marly (patronyme trouvé dans l'annuaire) pour danser dans les Ballets russes avant d'entamer une carrière de chanteuse dans les grands cabarets parisiens. Anna Marly connaît un nouvel exode en mai 1940 qui la mène, via l'Espagne et le Portugal, à Londres en 1941 où elle s'engage comme cantinière au quartier général des Forces françaises libres de Carlton Garden. C'est là qu'elle compose, à la guitare, en 1942, les paroles russes et la musique de son Chant des partisans. L'année suivante, toujours à Londres Joseph Kessel et Maurice Druon écrivent les paroles françaises de ce chant. Le Chant des partisans, « La Marseillaise de la Résistance », fut créé en 1943 à Londres. Immédiatement, il devint l'hymne de la Résistance française, et même européenne. Il est aussi un appel à la lutte fraternelle pour la liberté : « C'est nous qui brisons les barreaux des prisons pour nos frères » ; la certitude que le combat n'est jamais vain : « si tu tombes, un ami sort de l'ombre à ta place ».
Devenu l'indicatif de l'émission de la radio britannique BBC Honneur et Patrie, puis comme signe de reconnaissance dans les maquis, Le Chant des partisans était devenu un succès mondial. Anna avait choisi de siffler ce chant, car la mélodie sifflée restait audible malgré le brouillage de la BBC effectué par les Allemands.

Voilà l'adaptation française de l'hymne des partisans russes, relatant la défaite des troupes tsaristes en Ukraine. La musique est celle d'une vieille marche des armées tsaristes, à la gloire de la patrie. Il pourrait être l'oeuvre du général Tchernikov en 1828. Au début de la Première Guerre mondiale l'écrivain Guiliarovski en écrit le texte. Puis celui-ci a connu plusieurs variantes (sous des titres différents) durant la Première Guerre mondiale. Il finira, détournée par l'armée rouge criminelle de Léon Bronstein (Trotzky) comme hymne communiste. C'est cet air qui connaîtra un grand succès. La mélodie inspira Scriabine pour les armées blanches.

Née le 30 octobre 1917 à Saint-Pétersbourg, pendant la Révolution russe au cours de laquelle son père fut fusillé, Anna Betoulinsky quitte la Russie pour la France au début des années 1920 avec sa mère, sa sœur et sa nounou. À l'âge de treize ans la nounou lui offre une guitare. Ce cadeau dont elle ne se séparera jamais va bouleverser sa vie.
Quelques années plus tard, elle prend le nom d'Anna Marly (patronyme trouvé dans l'annuaire) pour danser dans les Ballets russes avant d'entamer une carrière de chanteuse dans les grands cabarets parisiens. Anna Marly connaît un nouvel exode en mai 1940 qui la mène, via l'Espagne et le Portugal, à Londres en 1941 où elle s'engage comme cantinière au quartier général des Forces françaises libres de Carlton Garden. C'est là qu'elle compose, à la guitare, en 1942, les paroles russes et la musique de son Chant des partisans. L'année suivante, toujours à Londres Joseph Kessel et Maurice Druon écrivent les paroles françaises de ce chant. Le Chant des partisans, « La Marseillaise de la Résistance », fut créé en 1943 à Londres. Immédiatement, il devint l'hymne de la Résistance française, et même européenne. Il est aussi un appel à la lutte fraternelle pour la liberté : « C'est nous qui brisons les barreaux des prisons pour nos frères » ; la certitude que le combat n'est jamais vain : « si tu tombes, un ami sort de l'ombre à ta place ».
Devenu l'indicatif de l'émission de la radio britannique BBC Honneur et Patrie, puis comme signe de reconnaissance dans les maquis, Le Chant des partisans était devenu un succès mondial. Anna avait choisi de siffler ce chant, car la mélodie sifflée restait audible malgré le brouillage de la BBC effectué par les Allemands.

Under the faithful leadership of Marshal Tito, the Yugoslavian partisans have put up a staunch fight against the occupying Axis powers for a number of years. Despite being outgunned, outmaneuvered, and vastly outnumbered, they managed to recuperate in the harsh mountainous region called Durmitor in northern Montenegro. In the previous three episodes of the History of Islam, we described the first three Caliphs and their characteristics. We also discussed their most notable accomplishments and how they ruled the Caliphate.

Resistance Movements occurred in every occupied country by a variety of means, ranging from non-cooperation, disinformation and propaganda to hiding crashed pilots and even to outright warfare and the recapturing of towns. Resistance movements were the people of the inhabited place trying to stop the Nazi Government. Resistance movements are sometimes also referred to as " the underground".
Among the most notable resistance movements were the Yugoslav Partisans (largest in WW2), the Polish Home Army, the Soviet partisans, the French Forces of the interior, the Italian CLN, the Norwegian Resistance, the Greek resistance and the Dutch Resistance.
Jean Moulin, de Gaulle's representative in France, tasked with unifying the various French Factions into one French Resistance Movement. Moulin was betrayed in 1943 and was tortured to death by Klaus Barbie (Head of the Gestapo in Lyon), nicknamed the Butcher of Lyon. This served only to strengthen the resolve of the resisters and Moulin is hailed as " a famous son of France ".

Many countries had resistance movements dedicated to fighting the Axis invaders and Germany itself also had an anti- Nazi movement. Although Britain didnt suffer the Nazi occupation in WW2, the British made preparations for a British Resistance Movement, called Auxilliary Units, in the event of a German Invasion. Various organisations were also formed to establish foreign resistance cells or support exisiting resistance movements, like the British SOE and the American OSS.
There were also resistance movements fighting against the Allies. In Italian East Africa, after the Italian forces were defeated during the East African Campaign, some Italians partcipated in a guerilla war against the British (1941-1943). The German Nazi Resistance movement ("Werwolf") never mounted to much. On the other hand, the " Forest Brothers" of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania included many fighters who fought for the Nazis and operated against the Soviet Occupation .
Organisation
Organsiation was dangerous, so much resistance was done by individuals. The possibilities depended much on the terrain, where there were large tracts of uninhabited land, especially hills and forests, resistance could more easily get organsied undetected. This favoured in particular the Soviet Partisan in Russia. In the much more densely populated Netherlands, the Biesbosch wilderness could be used to go into hiding. In Northern Italy, both the Alps and Appennines offered shelter to partisan brigades though many groups operated directly inside the major cities.
There were many types of groups, ranging in activity from humanitarian aid to armed resistance, sometimes cooperating to a varying degree. Resistance usually arose spontaneously but was encouraged and helped mainly from London and Moscow.
Various forms of resistance were
1. Non- violent ie Sabotage where locals, forced to work for the Nazis would work slowly or badly - Strikes and demonstartion - Professional Resistance by churches, students, Doctors or other professionals.
2. Armed ie raids on distribution offices for food or doucuments, temporary liberation of areas such as in Yugoslavia, Paris and Northern Italy occasionally assisted by the Allies- uprisings as in Warsaw in 1943/1944- continuous battle and guerilla warfare, such as partisans in the USSR and Yugoslavia or the Maquis in France
3.Espionage, including sending reports of military importance (eg troop movements, weather etc
4.Illegal press to counter Nazi propaganda
5.Politaical resistance to prepare for the reorganisation after the war
6.Helping people go into hiding (eg to escape froced labour or deportation as took place in the Netherlands
7.Helping Allied military personnel caught behind the Lines

Despite being outgunned, outmaneuvered, and vastly outnumbered, they managed to recuperate in the harsh mountainous region called Durmitor in northern Montenegro. However, their rest was short-lived, as the combined foreign and domestic Axis powers begin an encirclement offensive, outnumbering them 6:1. The Partisans have no choice but to fight out of the encirclement, heading towards eastern Bosnia. They finally clash with the Axis on the plains of Sutjeska in southeastern Bosnia.
Various people are caught up in the fighting, such as a Dalmatian who lost all of his children during the war. As the fighting intensifies, the story and the scenes are drawn more and more into the colossal battle as both sides are forced into a conflict that can only be described as a living hell. The scenes are interlaced between general battle rage and individual, personal fates and agonies of several main characters, from supreme commanders to ordinary soldiers.
The offensive finally ends as a failure for the Axis armies, but the Partisans are not in a mood to celebrate -- they suffered devastating losses. Still, they marched on.
