Socotra is a small archipelago of four islands in the Indian Ocean, near the Gulf of Aden. Situated some 250 miles off the coast of Yemen, the largest member of the archipelago, also called Socotra, is home to some of the weirdest looking plants that are found nowhere else on the planet. Like the Galapagos Islands, this island is teeming with 825 rare species of plants of which more than a third are endemic. Extremely high levels of endemism also occur in Socotra's reptiles. 90% of its reptile species and 95% of its land snail species do not occur anywhere else in the world. The marine life of Socotra is also very diverse, with 253 species of reef-building corals, 730 species of coastal fish and 300 species of crab, lobster and shrimp, and well represented in the property's marine areas.

Socotra is a small Yemeni island, off the southern coast of the Arabian Peninsula.
After many years of wanting to visit, I made it in February 2010. It was incredible to say the least - it's the most mystical, beautiful and diverse place i've visited so far, and had a deep, profound impact on me.
To share some of this experience, here's a video of my time there. I'll also be releasing a book of photographs and stories - stay tuned for details.

Hidden gem of the Arabian sea, the isolated island of Socotra is a prehistoric treasure-trove of life and culture with one of the most unique, untouched and unusual landscapes on earth.
Socotra is one of those "lost world" islands (separated from the world six million years ago) where intrepid travelers - particularly those seeking exotic nature and wildlife in a remote tropical setting - can go days on end without rubbing shoulders with that less -than-endangered species...tourists.
Known for decades as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean, it's the world's tenth richest island for endemic plant species. And the biggest island in the Middle East 125 kilometers in length and 45 kilometers across.
Meanwhile the landscape is one of contrasts, for example, it has isolated nature preserves with dazzling wildlife (including 900 species of plants, and the famous Dragon's Blood Tree "dracaena cinnabara" and some of the rarest birds that exist nowhere else in the world), and picturesque sandy beaches.

Socotra (Arabic: سُقُطْرَى Suquṭra), also spelled Soqotra, is a small archipelago of four islands in the Indian Ocean. The largest island, also called Socotra, is about 95% of the landmass of the archipelago. It lies some 240 kilometres (150 mi) east of the Horn of Africa and 380 kilometres (240 mi) south of the Arabian Peninsula. The island is very isolated and through the process of speciation, a third of its plant life is found nowhere else on the planet. It has been described as the most alien-looking place on Earth. The island measures 132 kilometres (82 mi) in length and 49.7 kilometres (30.9 mi) in width.
Socotra is part of the Republic of Yemen. It had long been a part of the 'Adan Governorate. In 2004, it became attached to the Hadhramaut Governorate, which is much closer to the island than 'Adan (although the nearest governorate is Al Mahrah).
There was initially an Oldoway (or Oldowan) culture in Socotra. Oldoway stone tools were found in the area around Hadibo by V.A. Zhukov, a member of the Russian Complex Expedition in 2008.

This was an exploratory trip we did to the beautiful Island of Socotra in Yemen. This is a small part of the World which is almost untouched by modern day life and has some monster GTs. The trip was a great success and we caught some huge fish while experiencing some amazing scenery and people. We look forward to doing future trips to this amazing part of the World, it is a total adventure from start to finish and not for the faint hearted.

This was an exploratory trip we did to the beautiful Island of Socotra in Yemen. This is a small part of the World which is almost untouched by modern day life and has some monster GTs. The trip was a great success and we caught some huge fish while experiencing some amazing scenery and people. We look forward to doing future trips to this amazing part of the World, it is a total adventure from start to finish and not for the faint hearted. -

Socotra is a small Yemeni island, off the southern coast of the Arabian Peninsula.
After many years of wanting to visit, I made it in February 2010. It was incredible to say the least - it's the most mystical, beautiful and diverse place i've visited so far, and had a deep, profound impact on me.
To share some of this experience, here's a video of my time there. I'll also be releasing a book of photographs and stories - stay tuned for details.

This was an exploratory trip we did to the beautiful Island of Socotra in Yemen. This is a small part of the World which is almost untouched by modern day life and has some monster GTs. The trip was a great success and we caught some huge fish while experiencing some amazing scenery and people. We look forward to doing future trips to this amazing part of the World, it is a total adventure from start to finish and not for the faint hearted.

Socotra Island is home to some pretty weird animal and plant life, which could raise some questions about which planet it's really on.
It looks more like a 1960s Star Trek set than an island a couple hundred miles off the coast of Yemen.
Likely because Socotra's native plants and animals have had to do some serious adapting to keep up with the island's brutally hot and windy conditions, making many of them completely unique to the locale.
Once the destination for Egyptians and Greeks looking for frankincense, aloe, and the red sap of the dragon's blood tree, the island is now mostly visited by devotees of the weird.
And looking part like an umbrella and part like a gigantic mushroom, the dragon's blood tree is certainly weird.
Another eye catching yet eyebrow-raising specimen is Socotran desert rose, which resembles a gargantuan, misshapen root vegetable wearing a tiara of pink flowers.
With 90 percent of its reptiles existing nowhere other than the island, they're bound to be the subjects of some fierce lore. One endemic chameleon is fabled to render voiceless anyone who hears its hiss.

The drug shipment had been seized from smugglers trying to defy last week’s ban by the archipelago’s governor, local officials said. Yemenis have chewed qat for centuries.
