As a hugely prolific songwriter, producer and instrumentalist, Teddy Riley significantly shaped the sound of R&B; as we know it. In the late ’80s and early ’90s, Riley virtually masterminded the new jack swing genre as the man behind hits by Keith Sweat, Guy, Blackstreet and Bobby Brown, while also co-producing Michael Jackson’s Dangerous album and giving The Neptunes their first break.
At the Red Bull Music Academy Festival New York 2017 Riley sat down for a public talk about how it all started, the travails of making it and losing it and the working habits of some of his best known and most intimate collaborators.

New Jack Swing or Swingbeat is a fusion genre spearheaded by Teddy Riley and other producers that became popular from the late 1980s into the early 1990s. Its influence, along with Hip Hop, seeped into pop culture and was the definitive sound of the inventive Black New York club scene. It fuses the rhythms, samples, and production techniques of Hip Hop and Dance-Pop with the Urban Contemporary Sound of R&B;. The #NewJackSwing style developed as many previous music styles did, by combining elements of older styles with newer sensibilities. It used R&B; style vocals sung over Hip Hop and Dance-Pop style influenced instrumentation. The sound of New Jack Swing comes from the Hip Hop "Swing" Beats created by drum machine, and hardware samplers, which was popular during the Golden Age of Hip Hop, with contemporary R&B; style singing.

Teddy Riley
Edward Theodore "Teddy" Riley (born October 8, 1967) is a Grammy Award–winning American singer-songwriter, musician, keyboardist and record producer credited with the creation of the new jack swing genre. Through his production work with Michael Jackson, Bobby Brown, Doug E. Fresh, Today, Keith Sweat, Heavy D., Usher, Jane Child, etc. and membership of the groups Guy and Blackstreet, Riley is credited with having a massive impact and seminal influence on the formation of contemporary R&B, hip-hop, soul and pop since the 1980s.
Early life
Teddy Riley was raised in St. Nicholas Houses, Harlem, New York. Riley, a child prodigy since the age of 5, began playing instruments in the church. His uncle, who owned the famed Harlem club The Rooftop, built a studio in the club in which Riley would spend most of his time while growing up. By 14, upstart New York rappers began making music to his tracks. Under the guidance of local music producer Gene Griffin, Riley formed the short-lived group Kids at Work. At the age of 17, Riley produced Kool Moe Dee's 12" single, "Go See the Doctor". Released on an independent label in 1986, the song became a crossover hit, reaching #89 on The Billboard Hot 100. Riley had previously worked on the production of Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew's "The Show" in 1985.

New Jack
Jerome Young (born January 5, 1963) is an American semi-retired professional wrestler, better known by his stage name New Jack in ECW. Young is known for his willingness to take dangerous bumps and his stiff hardcore wrestling style, often taking high risks and "shooting" on opponents. He is also known for having his theme song ("Natural Born Killaz" by Ice Cube and Dr. Dre) play throughout his matches in ECW. The inspiration for his ring name came from the movie New Jack City.
Professional wrestling career
Young trained under Ray Candy and debuted in 1992 in the Memphis, Tennessee-based United States Wrestling Association (USWA), where he adopted the name New Jack. He went on to form a tag team, The Gangstas, with Mustafa Saed and D-Lo Brown in Smoky Mountain Wrestling (SMW). The Gangstas took part in several controversial angles, on one occasion using affirmative action to enable them to win matches with a two count pinfall as opposed to the conventional three count. They engaged in a long feud with the Rock 'N Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson). During their stint, the NAACP would picket outside the performance venues because of the "Gangsta" gimmick, claiming that no racial violence had occurred in the Tennessee area for years, and they did not want the reputation of gangsters to be put into the Tennessee area.

New jack swing did not take up the trend of using sampled beats, and instead created beats using the then-new SP-1200 sampler and Roland TR-808 drum machine to lay an "insistent beat under light melody lines and clearly enunciated vocals."Encyclopædia Britannica states that the "key producers" were Babyface, Bernard Belle, and Teddy Riley.

Hip hop
Hip hop or hip-hop is a sub-cultural movement that formed during the early 1970s by African-American and Puerto Rican youths residing in the South Bronx in New York City. It became popular outside of the African-American community in the late 1980s and by the 2000s became the most listened-to musical genre in the world. It is characterized by four distinct elements, all of which represent the different manifestations of the culture: rap music (oral), turntablism or DJing (aural), b-boying (physical) and graffiti art (visual). Even while it continues to develop globally in myriad styles, these four foundational elements provide coherence to hip hop culture. The term is often used in a restrictive fashion as synonymous only with the oral practice of rap music.
The origin of the hip hop culture stems from the block parties of the Ghetto Brothers, when they plugged in the amplifiers for their instruments and speakers into the lampposts on 163rd Street and Prospect Avenue and used music to break down racial barriers, and from DJ Kool Herc at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, where Herc mixed samples of existing records with his own shouts to the crowd and dancers. Kool Herc is credited as the "father" of hip hop. DJ Afrika Bambaataa of the hip hop collective Zulu Nation outlined the pillars of hip hop culture, to which he coined the terms: MCing or "Emceein", DJing or "Deejayin", B-boying and graffiti writing or "Aerosol Writin".

The history of the New Jack Swing Movement by Teddy Riley and many other New Jack Swing acts. New Jack Swing or Swingbeat is a fusion genre spearheaded by Teddy Riley and other producers that became popular from the late 1980s into the early 1990s. Its influence, along with Hip Hop, seeped into pop culture and was the definitive sound of the inventive Black New York club scene. As a hugely prolific songwriter, producer and instrumentalist, Teddy Riley significantly shaped the sound of R&B; as we know it. In the late ’80s and early ’90s, Riley virtually masterminded the new jack swing genre as the man behind hits by Keith Sweat, Guy, Blackstreet and Bobby Brown, while also co-producing Michael Jackson’s Dangerous album and giving The Neptunes their first break.
At the Red Bull Music Academy Festival New York 2017 Riley sat down for a public talk about how it all started, the travails of making it and losing it and the working habits of some of his best known and most intimate collaborators.

New Jack Swing or Swingbeat is a fusion genre spearheaded by Teddy Riley and other producers that became popular from the late 1980s into the early 1990s. Its influence, along with Hip Hop, seeped into pop culture and was the definitive sound of the inventive Black New York club scene. It fuses the rhythms, samples, and production techniques of Hip Hop and Dance-Pop with the Urban Contemporary Sound of R&B;. The #NewJackSwing style developed as many previous music styles did, by combining elements of older styles with newer sensibilities. It used R&B; style vocals sung over Hip Hop and Dance-Pop style influenced instrumentation. The history of the New Jack Swing Movement by Teddy Riley and many other New Jack Swing acts. New Jack Swing or Swingbeat is a fusion genre spearheaded by Teddy Riley and other producers that became popular from the late 1980s into the early 1990s. Its influence, along with Hip Hop, seeped into pop culture and was the definitive sound of the inventive Black New York club scene. It fuses the rhythms, samples, and production techniques of Hip Hop and Dance-Pop with the Urban Contemporary Sound of R&B;. Black history is American history, especially when it comes to music. African-American musical traditions set in motion a culture that's given us Jazz, the Blues, Rock n Roll, Funk, Disco, Soul, and Hip Hop.
Despite this evolution, for much of the 20th Century “Rhythm & Blues” was a blanket term applied to any music marketed to black audiences, changing meaning with each era. As Hip Hop entered the picture artists like Teddy Riley, Jodeci, and members of New Edition incorporated the new sound and style into a classic R&B; template. Since then, the line between the two would continue to blur, influencing pop music forever.
Under The Influence shows how New Jack Swing married Hip Hop and classic R&B; to give birth to something entirely new for the 90s, paving the way for today's artists like Kehlani, Ty Dolla $ign, Dreezy, and Phantogram, while helping make millions of babies.

We spent a day with Teddy, where he showed us around Future Recording Studios 2 and played us a brand new version of Guy's 1988 hit 'Teddy's Jam' on the Novation MiniNova.
Teddy Riley has always had the cutting edge on production. Highlights of his career include forming R&B; super groups Guy and Blackstreet, co-producing and co-engineering Michael Jackson's Dangerous album (which has sold over 32 million copies) winning Riley a Grammy for Best Engineering non-classical. He has produced countless landmark records, such as the LP "Make it Last" Keith Sweat, Bobby Brown's 'My Perogative', Johnny Kemp "Just Got Paid", Blackstreet "No Diggity", The Hip Hop Classic "The Show", "Rugrats" The Movie and hit after hit for the late Heavy D and a long list of others.

MiniNova is a compact, super-cool studio and live synth with the same sound engine as its big brother; UltraNova. The history of the New Jack Swing Movement by Teddy Riley and many other New Jack Swing acts. New Jack Swing or Swingbeat is a fusion genre spearheaded by Teddy Riley and other producers that became popular from the late 1980s into the early 1990s.
