Istria is the destination of my “Timeout”, to relax on the Adriatic Sea, enjoy the water and have fun with friends. Istria seems to be the right place – not as overcrowded as Italy
01:26 In Punat the sailing trip begins. First stop is the harbor of Male Losinj, where we visit a Dolphin station and sail out to see the dolphins of the Adriatic Sea in nature. The sea is calm, so we might have a chance of spotting the dolphins.
03:24 Visit of the Late Roman and Early Byzantine Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč. From the church tower we have a beautiful view of Porec. Just outside we visit the stalagmite caves, where we see the rare animal olm, or proteus.
05:22 Paladini further inland is known for its specialty, which can be found under oak trees: black truffle. The truffles are searched with dogs that dig the black truffle. We taste the truffles: A truffle plater and afterwards the specialty of the house – a truffle-egg dish. The black truffles are in season all year round, the white ones only from September to January. The black ones you find on the mountain, the white ones in the valley.
10:17 In the bay of Rovinj we are supposed to get an introduction to diving. The diving teacher explains the basics of diving. The bottle has a pressure of 200 bar, which means that we have 2000 liters of air.
12:35 The hotel manager Peter Lösch tells us that Istria is the Tuscany of the future. Tom, a star-chef, is a well-known TV chef in Croatia: We want the direct contact with the guest, so there is no menu, the menu comes from conversation. We eat Adriatic scampi with chickpea puree, a Japanese Tataki, scallops panfried underneath a paste of white beans, foie gras with salt and sugar, cognac and port wine, duck terrine with white bacon.
17:37 We make a boat tour on the 13 km long Lim canal, also called Limski fjord. Here's a pirate's cave because according to a legend the pirate Captain Morgan lived here. Some call it “Winnetou cave” because the movie “Der Schatz im Silbersee” (The treasure in Silver Lake), with Goijko Mijtic, was filmed there and at Mitvicer Lake.
20:50 We are invited to sample olive at Sandy's, known for producing the best olive oil in Istria. Oliveoil tasting is very similar to wine tasting. We have to pivot the glass with the oilfor two minutes, then smell it and if you taste it then, take a small quantity in the mouth, then you take a small quantity of air and you wait a few seconds before you drink it. When you put the oil in the mouth it's a very intensive taste of green olives, when you drink the oil, than comes the aftertaste that is spicy and bitter. When the oil is spicy and bitter this means that it is full of antioxidants and polyphenols. If you have a sweet taste, then it's a low quality olive oil.

The journey through Istria continues...
01:39 A visit at Ales', who abandoned his top-job to become a bio farmer. He lets us taste his cheese specialties.
04:10 We want to continue on horseback through the countryside. We visit the Barba Tone Ranch where the Western and endurance rider Zoran has built a little horse paradise. Here you can bath with the horses in the lake.
07:18 We stay at the Hotel Lone, a modern design hotel in Rovinj. Sailing lesson at the coast of Rovinj: here we learn the basics of sailing.
10:28 Visit of the city of Rovinj with its promenade, lunch in the seafood restaurant Miriana's. In the evening the Patana-Festival takes place. A Patana is a traditional boat, mostly used in the Adriatic Sea, it is usually 4-8 meters long. We take a tour in a Patana around the peninsula. On that day many ships are on the water, the men sing Italian songs and sail across the sea.
15:54 Chef Tom takes us to Bruno Trapans vineyard. The barrels are made of acacia wood (80% ) and oak wood (20%), so we create a special taste for white wine.
18:57 On the way back we spot a folk festival in the village of Kanfanar and I realize that the music sounds very much like music from the Alps. We learn that this festival is all about oxen. Every year the most magnificent and heaviest ox of the peninsula wins a prize.
19:56 We're going to Hum,the oldest inhabited city in Istria, a picturesque little village on top of the hill.

The Croatian coast, with its unique beauty, characteristic seaside towns, warm, sunny weather, colorful bays, lush, green vegetation, interesting historical monuments is one of the most enticing parts of the Mediterranean. The gem of this magnificent area is the Istrian-peninsula, which is, because of its proximity, one of the most beloved traveling objectives of Hungarian tourists. Its rugged coast hides beautiful bays, and beaches. From among the many sceneries stand out Porec, famous of its mosaics, Pula, with its Roman amphitheatre, Vrsas, showing us a great sight to the islands, and Opatija and Rovinj, which unify the mood of the monarchy and sight of an exclusive beach.

Massacrati ed infoibati
Sangue il pianto dei miei padri
Esiliati ed umiliati
Terra e sangue ho nel mio cuore
Terra rossa dolce amore
Lacrime della mia gente
Terra rossa che non sente
Il dolore mai lontano
Del popolo istriano
Vojo tornar voglio tornare
Vojo tornar voglio tornare a casa mia!
Istria, Fiume e Dalmazia
né slovenia né croazia
Terra rossa terra istriana
terra mia terra italiana!
Istria, Fiume e Dalmazia
né slovenia né croazia
Terra dalmata e giuliana
terra mia terra italiana!
Questa terra ho nelle vene
Questa terra mi appartiene
Terra nostra per la storia
Nel mio sangue la memoria
Terra e sangue sempre uniti
Non possono esser divisi
Terra mia santificata
Con il sangue terra sacra
Questa è la mia religione
L'unità della Nazione
Religione insanguinata
Religione della Patria
Terra pazzamente amata
Terra mai dimenticata
Ogni vero italiano
È anche dalmata e giuliano.
Tierra Roja
Tierra Roja, tierra mía
Cuando me he ido lejos
Te he confiado mi corazón,
Te he jurado amor eterno
Casa mía, tierra mía,
Tierra Roja, sangre mía
Roja la sangre de mis padres
Masacrados y enfosados
Sangre el llano de mi padre
Exiliado y humillado
Tierra y sangre tengo en mi corazón
Tierra Roja, dulce amor
Lágrimas de mi gente
Tierra Roja que no siente
El dolor nunca lejano
Del pueblo istriano
Quiero volver, quiero volver
Quiero volver, ¡Quiero volver a mi casa!
Istria, Fiume y Dalmacia, ni Eslovenia ni Croacia
Tierra Roja, tierra istriana, tierra mía, ¡Tierra italiana!
Istria, Fiume y Dalmacia, ni Eslovenia ni Croacia
Tierra Roja, tierra istriana, tierra mía, ¡Tierra italiana!
Esta tierra llevo en las venas,
Esta tierra me pertenece
Tierra nuestra por la Historia
Sangre en mi memoria
Tierra y sangre siempre unidas
No pueden ser divididas
Tierra mia santificada
Con la sangre, tierra sagrada
Esta es mi religión
La unidad de la Nación
Religión ensangrentada
Religión de la patria
Tierra locamente amada
Tierra nunca olvidada
Cada verdadero italiano
Es también dálmata y Giuliano

The Slovenian-Croatian peninsula of Istria is one of Europe‘s oldest settlement areas, the Pearl Of Adria with an eventful history and much multicultural flair; a rich interface between both Mediterranean and mediaeval cultures. In Koper, Istria’s economic centre and most important harbour city, the Old Town can be entered through the last remaining twelve gates of the city’s former defensive wall. In its heyday the city boomed with wine, oil, salt and fish and many merchants and craftsmen from Italy settled there and the Palazzo Belgramoni Tacco became the region‘s museum. The mediaeval town of Piran is located on a narrow promontory that juts out into Piran Bay like the bow of a ship. On a cliff above the old town is the Sanct George Church, and a bell tower on the town’s fortified walls provides a splendid view of the mainland, a maze of roof tops and the main square. Travelling further south, Poreć is picturesquely situated on a peninsula and City Hall reveals much of its history. In 1267, Poreć, as Istria’s first city, was affiliated to the Serenissima and palaces, squares and religious buildings were constructed. In the fertile countryside lies yet another Istrian gem, Hum, the ‘smallest town in the world’ with its well-preserved gate, cobblestones and single lane. Portorož is the only real resort on the Slovenian Riviera with several hotels lining its waterfront and since the Danube Monarchy it has been a fashionable meeting place of the elite of Central Europe. Istria is a beauty with many faces, a rediscovered Adria dream and an almost forgotten paradise.

The Piazza is one of the most beautiful Venetian squares of the entire Adriatic region and the cathedral which frames the square has numerous architectural styles. Brollo, an area just beyond the centre of the city, served as a collecting basin for rainwater which was drawn by two wells from a cistern below. The Gothic, Fontico, was used for the storage of surplus grain which was distributed to the people in years of hardship. Today Koper is Slovenia’s window to the world and the country’s only seaport.

Their goal was the Venetian maritime town of Piran, the most beautiful place on the Slovenian Riviera, an enchanting mediaeval town. The charm and flair of old alleys reflect the history of this idyllic town whose origin dates back to the fifth century. Ancient Greeks, Romans, Slavs, a German Emperor, the Venetians and the Habsburgs, they all wanted this town and it prospered accordingly. For more than five centuries the town was under Venetian rule, a time when it took on the form which we see today and from the wide-ranging trade network of the Serenissima, Piran profitted well.

Travel video about destination Rovinj in Croatia.
The historic centre of Rovinj is located on a shell-shaped peninsula on Istria’s Mediterranean coastline in the north of Croatia. Seen from the sea it is one of the most stunning of the Adriatic’s port cities, harmonious and compact, a perfect cityscape. In the eighteenth century the city’s inhabitants built their basilica according to the plans of Venetian architect, Giovanni Dozzi, on the foundation of a previous Romanesque building. The bright interior of the imposing three-nave basilica contains splendid architecture, fine ceiling paintings and altars. Although Rovinj fell for a long time under the protection of the naval power of Venice, it was still haunted by the Genoese, pirates and pestilence, but the city managed to survive all of its tribulations and was designated as a cultural monument in 1963. The wealthy people of ancient Rome once thought of the region as a holiday paradise and so it has remained right up until the present day. The romantic Pearl Of The Croatian Riviera has lost nothing of its original charm. Rovinj encapsulates history, culture and beauty!

Travel video about destination Porec in Croatia.
Poreć is picturesquely situated on a peninsula in the north of Croatia‘s Istrian coast. At first glance it appears to be a typical holiday paradise visited by thousands of tourists each year but its Town Hall offers a hint of its historic past, the traditional style of Venetian Renaissance. In 1267, Poreć, as Istria’s first city, was affiliated to the Serenissima and with the subsequent construction of palaces, squares and religious buildings, it soon took on a Venetian appearance which has remained until the present day. The harbour’s traditional buildings date back to the time of the fall of Venice and when the city came under Austrian rule. In Roman times the Old Town had an efficient road network. Poreć’s main street, Decumanus, divides various groups of buildings of dominant Gothic design. In 539 A.D. the city came under the rule of the Byzantines who founded a bishopric there in around about 800 A.D.Between 539 A.D. and 553 A.D. Bishop Euphrasius had a basilica built on the foundations of several earlier buildings, an Early Byzantine masterpiece and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Poreć is a little gem with a great history and culture and even now, Pearl Of The Adriatic!

Travel video about destination Croatia.
Croatia is a European country located in the Mediterranean, a treasure trove of culture and architecture with a long history, ancient buildings, Christian churches, Venetian cities, colourful traditions and stunning coastline of more than a thousand islands. Zagreb is its political and cultural focal point, an amiable capital city situated at the intersection of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. The Kaptol district has been its Catholic heart since the Middle Ages. An atmospheric place, Upper Town is a gem Zagreb’s historic past. North of Zagreb on the western border with Slovenia, the picture-perfect Veliki Tabor Castle rises on a hill, its Renaissance courtyard with columns and arcades possessing a touch of southern elegance. Kumrovec, birthplace of the former President of Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito, is located south of the castle and is now a museum village. The historic centre of Rovinj is located on a shell-shaped peninsula, further south on the Adriatic coast. Seen from the sea it is one of the most stunning of the Adriatic’s harbour cities. Situated close to the southern tip of the Istrian Peninsula is Pula, the oldest city on Croatia‘s eastern Adriatic coast. The largest square of the Old Town, and today‘s main square, was originally located on the site of a Roman forum. The historical centre of Split is a cultural work of art, its palace, sea aspect and bay a harmonious blend of both ancient and mediaeval times. Dubrovnik‘s historic centre possesses many treasures such as the Onofri Fountain, the Saint Spas Chapel and the Franciscan Church. Due to its magnificent location, unique Old Town and beautiful buildings, Dubrovnik has become tantamount to an amazing work of art. Croatia is a country of timeless Mediterranean beauty, a place in the sun where history reflects in the Adriatic and Occident meets Orient - a Balkan paradise!

Travel video about destination Pula in Croatia.
Situated close to the southern tip of the Istrian Peninsula in Coatia, is Pula, the oldest city on the eastern Adriatic coast. In Roman times the large square of this historic centre contained a forum and has many buildings that reflect the city’s recent history, including the Renaissance Town Hall that was built in 1296 at the end of Constantinople rule. Next to the Town Hall is the well-preserved Temple Of Augustus that dates back to 14 A.D. and was dedicated to the Roman Emperor. Prior to Roman times, it was Greek historians who first mentioned Pula in connection with a city founded by the Argonauts. Pula’s monumental Roman amphitheatre today ranks among the six largest of those that once belonged to the Roman Empire. The one hundred and five metre wide structure could accommodate twenty three thousand spectators. Numerous games and executions took place within it until 404 A.D. when gladiatorial battles were forbidden and the arena became a market place. Pula is a city of Roman roots, Byzantine monuments, past Venetian rule and recent K. and K. memories: an intriguing blend of history!

A fascinating land with a hard-fought history in a complex corner of Europe, Croatia is emerging as one of Europe's top destinations. Sampling the very best of Croatia, we start by exploring the fabled Dalmatian Coast from dramatic Dubrovnik to crusty Adriatic island ports. Travel video about destination Dubrovnik in Croatia.
Within the southernmost archipelago of Dalmatia is one of the most fascinating harbour cities of the young republic of Croatia, Dubrovnik, a breathtaking Mediterranean city with a great history. The "city of stone" had its heyday in the Middle Ages and was one of the most important economic and cultural centres in the Mediterranean. An ancient courtyard gate leads to the Old Town and to Luža Square, the city’s main square that contains a fine clock tower and splendid palace Loggia. The sixteenth century Sponza Palace consists of a combination of designs, including both Gothic and Renaissance, and once contained the Customs House and Mint. Despite much foreign rule, the city largely succeeded in being autonomous. Velika Gospa Cathedral was built between 1672 and 1713 on the ruins of a Romanesque basilica. According to legend, Richard The Lionheart was shipwrecked in the city on his return from the Third Crusade and his financial donation made it possible to build the city’s first church. From the thirteenth century the city was fortified with powerful walls that now rank among the largest, and also the most beautiful, in the whole of Europe. Dubrovnik is, amazingly, still a storybook city with all the flair of the Middle Ages. A treasure trove of history and undisputed Pearl Of The Adriatic.

James Francis Ivory (born June 7, 1928) is an American film director, best known for the results of his long collaboration with Merchant Ivory Productions, which included both Indian-born film producer Ismail Merchant, and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. Their films won six Academy Awards.
Ivory was born in Berkeley, California, the son of Hallie Millicent (née De Loney) and Edward Patrick Ivory, a sawmill operator. He is of Irish and French descent, and grew up in Klamath Falls, Oregon. He was educated at the University of Oregon, majoring in Architecture and Fine Arts and then at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, where he directed the short film Four in the Morning (1953).
Then he wrote, photographed, and produced Venice: Theme and Variations a half-hour documentary submitted as a thesis film for his degree in cinema at USC. The film was named by The New York Times in 1957 as one of the ten best non-theatrical films of the year. He graduated from USC in 1957.
In 1961, Ivory created the film production company, Merchant Ivory Productions, with Indian-born producer Ismail Merchant and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, who served as the screenwriter for many of their productions. Until Merchant's death in 2005, the company produced a number of award winning films. Of this collaboration, Ismail Merchant once commented: "IT IS a strange marriage we have at Merchant Ivory ... I am an Indian Muslim, Ruth is a German Jew, and Jim is a Protestant American. Someone once described us as a three-headed god. Maybe they should have called us a three-headed monster!"
Merchant was also Ivory's long-term life partner. Their professional and romantic partnership lasted from the early 1960s until Merchant's death in 2005.
In 1985 A Room with a View, based on the E. M. Forster novel, was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won three, for Jhabvala's adaptation of Forster's novel as well as for Best Costume and Best Production Design. A Room With a View was also voted Best Film of the year by the Critic's Circle Film Section of Great Britain, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the National Board of Review in the United States and in Italy, where the film won the Donatello Prize for Best Foreign Language Picture and Best Director.
In 1987, Maurice received a Silver Lion Award for Best director at the Venice Film Festival as well as Best Film Score for Richard Robbins and Best Actor Awards for co-stars James Wilby and Hugh Grant.
This was followed in 1990 by Mr. and Mrs. Bridge, which was adapted by Ruth Jhabvala from the novels by Evan S. Connell. This film received an Oscar nomination for best Actress (Joanne Woodward), as well as Best Actress and Best Screenplay from the New York Film Critics Circle.
In 1992 Ivory directed another Forster-adapted film, Howards End. The film was nominated for nine Academy awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won three: Best Actress (Emma Thompson), Best Screenplay -- Adaptation (Ruth Prawer Jhabvala), and Best Art Direction/Set Decoration (Luciana Arrighi/Ian Whittaker). The film also won Best Picture at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards, as well as awards for Best Picture, Best Actress for Emma Thompson and Best Director for Ivory from the National Board of Review. The Directors Guild of America awarded the D.W. Griffith award, its highest honor, to Ivory for his work. At the 1992 Cannes Film Festival the film won the 45th Anniversary Prize.
Howards End was immediately followed by The Remains of the Day, which in turn was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Location: Theater VALLI, Pula, Istria, Croatia
