A picturesque country, which is blessed by an unfathomable natural richness. Its charm, beside the coast full of bays, the warm watered fjords and reefs, high cliffs and the green hills is made up also by its artistic and historical values. On the Dalmatian Coast the romantic cities of Zadar and Trogir and the Saint Jacob cathedral of Sibenik make us remember to the past. In Split, one can take a look at emperor Diocletian’s unique palace. Among the natural beauties the crystal clear waters, waterfalls, caves and rapids of the Krka National Park are on top. Crikvenica introduce us to the mood of a spa in the monarchy, while the whole travel is crowned by the Queen of the Adriatic, Dubrovnik. Blue sky, glimmering sea, lovely islands, and wonderful landscape. They say that the heart of the traveling Odysseus was stolen not only by Nausicaa.

Dalmatia (/dælˈmeɪʃə/; Croatian: Dalmacija, Croatian pronunciation: [dǎlmaːt͡sija]; see names in other languages) is one of the four historical regions of Croatia, alongside Croatia proper, Slavonia, and Istria. Located on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, the region's hinterland, the Dalmatian Zagora, ranges in width from fifty kilometres in the north, to just a few kilometres in the south...
Definition
The name Dalmatia derives from the name of the Dalmatae tribe, which is connected with the Illyrian word delme meaning "sheep" (Albanian: dele).
In antiquity the Roman province of Dalmatia was much larger than the present-day Split-Dalmatia County, stretching from Istria in the north to historical Albania in the south. Dalmatia signified not only a geographical unit, but was an entity based on common culture and settlement types, a common narrow eastern Adriatic coastal belt, Mediterranean climate, sclerophyllous vegetation of the Illyrian province, Adriatic carbonate platform, and karst geomorphology.[citation needed]
Modern area
Dalmatia is today a historical region only, not formally instituted in Croatian law. Its exact extent is therefore uncertain and subject to public perception...
"Dalmatia" is therefore generally perceived to extend approximately to the borders of the Austrian Kingdom of Dalmatia...
From 1420 to 1797 the Republic of Venice controlled most of Dalmatia, calling it Esclavonia in the 15th century with the southern enclave, the Bay of Kotor, being called Albania Veneta. Venetian was the commercial lingua franca in the Mediterranean at that time, and it heavily influenced Dalmatian and to a lesser degree coastal Croatian and Albanian.
The southern city of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) became de facto independent in 1358 through the Treaty of Zadar when Venice relinquished its suzerainty over it to Louis I of Hungary. In 1481, Ragusa switched allegiance to the Ottoman Empire. This gave its tradesmen advantages such as access to the Black Sea, and the Republic of Ragusa was the fiercest competitor to Venice's merchants in the 15th and 16th century...
At the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Dalmatia was granted as a province to the Emperor of Austria. It was officially known as the Kingdom of Dalmatia...
At the end of the First World War, the Austrian Empire disintegrated, and Dalmatia was again split between the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later the Kingdom of Yugoslavia) which controlled most of it, and the Kingdom of Italy which held small portions of northern Dalmatia around Zadar and the islands of Cres, Lošinj and Lastovo...
Dalmatia was a strategic region during World War I that both Italy and Serbia intended to seize from Austria-Hungary...
In 1922, the territory of the former Kingdom of Dalmatia was divided into two provinces, the District of Split (Splitska oblast), with its capital in Split, and the District of Dubrovnik (Dubrovačka oblast), with its capital in Dubrovnik. In 1929, the Littoral Banovina (Primorska Banovina), a province of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, was formed. Its capital was Split, and it included most of Dalmatia and parts of present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina...
Following the surrender of Italy in 1943, most of Italian-controlled Dalmatia was reverted to Croatian control. Zadar was razed by the Allies during World War II, starting the exodus of its Italian population. After WWII, Dalmatia became part of the People's Republic of Croatia, part of the SFR Yugoslavia (then called the Federative People's Republic of Yugoslavia).
The territory of former Kingdom of Dalmatia was divided between two federal Republics of Yugoslavia and most of the territory went to Croatia, leaving only the Bay of Kotor to Montenegro. When Yugoslavia dissolved in 1991, those borders were retained and remain in force.
During the Croatian war of Independence, most of Dalmatia was a battleground between the Croatian government and local Serb rebels, with much of the region being placed under the control of Serbs. Croatia did regain southern parts of these territories in 1992 but did not regain all of the territory until 1995...

Travel video about destination Dubrovnik in Croatia.
Within the southernmost archipelago of Dalmatia is one of the most fascinating harbour cities of the young republic of Croatia, Dubrovnik, a breathtaking Mediterranean city with a great history. The "city of stone" had its heyday in the Middle Ages and was one of the most important economic and cultural centres in the Mediterranean. An ancient courtyard gate leads to the Old Town and to Luža Square, the city’s main square that contains a fine clock tower and splendid palace Loggia. The sixteenth century Sponza Palace consists of a combination of designs, including both Gothic and Renaissance, and once contained the Customs House and Mint. Despite much foreign rule, the city largely succeeded in being autonomous. Velika Gospa Cathedral was built between 1672 and 1713 on the ruins of a Romanesque basilica. According to legend, Richard The Lionheart was shipwrecked in the city on his return from the Third Crusade and his financial donation made it possible to build the city’s first church. From the thirteenth century the city was fortified with powerful walls that now rank among the largest, and also the most beautiful, in the whole of Europe. Dubrovnik is, amazingly, still a storybook city with all the flair of the Middle Ages. A treasure trove of history and undisputed Pearl Of The Adriatic.

Travel video about destination Krka in Croatia.
The Krka River, and numerous lakes that contain natural dams, forms a border between North and Central Dalmatia, and travels seventy five kilometres through the Croatian hills. The best way to experience the river is by boat upstream from Lake Visovac to Roški Slap. Above Roški Slap, and before the water plunges down to Lake Visovac, the calm and reflective waters of the national park make this landscape even more beautiful. The grey rock, with its layers of reddish marl, is reminiscent of Utah and Arizona which is why the German Winnetou films were shot in this area. Twelve kilometres from Šibenik and depending on the season, various large quantities of water crash down to the Prokljansko Jezero. The water makes its way through small forests and rock sediment that have formed one limestone sinter terrace after another. The masses of water gradually advance to the most spectacular travertin waterfall in Europe, Skradinski Buk. In the Krka, nature has created a wonder, an intriguing spectacle of both water and landscape.

The tapered strip that runs south along the Croatian coast of the Adriatic Mediterranean, is named Dalmatia, the sunny balcony of Europe, with ancient cities, atmospheric ruins and a wonderful maze of romantic islands. A ferry travels from the small coastal town of Biograd to Pašman Island, a popular weekend destination for those living on the mainland. The garden island of Pašman is not yet on the tourist trail and thus is a tranquil location where monks still inhabit the ideally situated Benedictine monastery of Sveti Kozma I Damjan. Dugi Otok Island is well known for two natural phenomena: its mile-long and up to a hundred and sixty metre high white coastal cliffs and the Mir Jezero, a salt water lake which is always around six degrees warmer than the sea. The picturesque old city of Trogir is situated on a small island which is connected to the mainland by a bridge and protected by sturdy walls and a fortress. In 380 B.C., Greeks from Issa settled there and founded the fortified city of Tragyrion. Under the Romans it became a thriving commercial port. Today, Split is the Croatian Republic’s second largest city, the financial and cultural centre of Dalmatia, its origin and importance dating back to Roman emperor, Diocletian. Dubrovnik, the historic Pearl Of The Adriatic, is one of the world’s most fascinating harbour cities, a city of stone whose heyday was the Middle Ages when it was one of the most important economic and cultural centres in the Mediterranean. Dalmatia,... a veritable paradise of dreamy islands and historic cities!

Travel video about destination Split in Croatia.
Split is the Croatian Republic’s second largest city and the financial and cultural centre of Dalmatia. It has a harbour for ferries, cruise liners and greets tourists from all over the world but the origin and importance of this city date back to Roman emperor, Diocletian who, planning for his retirement, wanted to build a grand property near to his hometown of Salona, a palace along the lines of a Roman castrum. The palace subsequently became an ancient city and the mausoleum a Christian cathedral to which a Venetian campanile was later added. An ingenious system of pillars, corridors, arches and vaulted ceilings, support the palace. Over the centuries, the large basement rooms remained almost untouched and only a few have been renovated. As the city above developed, the lower levels gradually became used as waste areas and eventually became inaccessible. In the west of the city, the Porta Ferrea, the Iron Gate, leads to the large Narodni Trg district which arose in the Middle Ages and was where rich patrician families built their city palaces in a grand mix of architectural styles. The historical centre of Split is a cultural work of art. The palace, its sea aspect and bay containing a harmonious blend of both ancient and mediaeval times.

Croatia is blessed by an unfathomable natural richness. The lakes of the Plitvice and Krka National Parks, the waterfalls, the rapids and the caves are all among the most beautiful landscapes of the world. The capital, Zagreb, captures the visitor with its inward mood and monarchy style buildings. Beside the warm watered fjords, the river deltas, the green hills, and pine forests many snow-covered mountaintops await the visitors. The smiley islands are providing the tourists various landscapes from the empty cliffs to the lush vegetation. The Adrian Sea with its bay, reefs, tempt us to water sports, and boat adventures, while its beaches promise the visitors a sunny holiday. Every settlement of the country, from the smallest to the largest, is rich in cultural, historical, architectural and artistic values. Beside the romantic, Mediterranean cities, the little bays, the idyllic villages there are baroque and gothic churches, Roman amphitheatres and theatres, sanctuaries from the roman age, golden mosaics, Venetian forts and towers invite us, and of course the roasted food and tasty vines.

Portugal. The 5 and half thousand square meters large southern part of the once proud colonial empire is Algarve, bathing all year in the sun. From the hilltops, moor forts look down on to the surroundings. In the old towns narrow roads lead up to the magnificent Manuel-style temples. The buildings are ornamented by Azulejos, moor painted tiles. The monuments and statues summon adventurers and explorers: Magellan and Vasco De Gama. The country is full of fishing villages, palm trees, vine arbours, olive tree orchards, and orange gardens. The Playa de Rocha and the other sandy beaches are surrounded by large cliffs, stone archs and lagoons. On the hill of Moniche we travel among pine trees and para oaks. From the lighthouse of the Saint Vincent cape we can only see the endless Atlantic Ocean, which the medieval man thought to be the end of the world.

Bavaria is the largest German territory. Its typical atmosphere is given by little towns and villages. Wooden shells, high red tiled roofs with many little skylights, old signboards, town walls, ancient churches, domes and steeples, narrow streets and riverbanks, huge green areas and many flowers take us to a wonderfully calm and merry world. Beside the well known Octoberfest holder Munich and the medieval older town look keeper Nuremberg, Regensburg and Augsburg there are castles like the romantic Neuschwanstein that are waiting for the traveller. There are glittering lakes in the green pinewood like the Königssee and the Chiemsee, and mountaintops like the snow-capped Zugspitze. Though Bavaria is only one territory within the German territories everyone can feel it is quite different from the others. It is richer, friendlier and its atmosphere is more delightful than the country’s other territories.
