Konstantin Ustinovich Chernenko (24 September 1911 – 10 March 1985) was a Soviet politician and the fifth General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. He led the Soviet Union from 13 February 1984 until his death thirteen months later, on 10 March 1985. Chernenko was also Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet from 11 April 1984 until his death.
Chernenko was born to a poor family in the village of Bolshaya Tes (now in Novosyolovsky District, Krasnoyarsk Krai). His father, Ustin Demidovich (of Ukrainian origin),[citation needed] worked in copper and gold mines while his mother took care of the farm work.
Chernenko joined the Komsomol (Communist Youth League) in 1929, and became a full member of the Communist Party in 1931. From 1930 to 1933, he served in the Soviet frontier guards on the Soviet-Chinese border. After completing his military service, he returned to Krasnoyarsk as a propagandist. In 1933 he worked in the Propaganda Department of the Novosyolovsky District Party Committee. A few years later he was promoted head of the same department in Uyarsk Raykom. Chernenko then steadily rose through the Party ranks, becoming the Director of the Krasnoyarsk House of Party Enlightenment then in 1939, the Deputy Head of the AgitProp Department of Krasnoyarsk Territorial Committee and finally, in 1941 he was appointed Secretary of the Territorial Party Committee for Propaganda. It was in the 1940s that Chernenko established a close-knit relationship with Fyodor Kulakov. In 1945, he acquired a diploma from a party training school in Moscow, and in 1953 he finished a correspondence course for schoolteachers.

War. War never changes.
You don't see books being advertised very often, especially these days. Bookshops, yes. Individual books, not so much. It wasn't exactly commonplace 34 years ago, either, when Pan books published "The Fate of the Earth" by Jonathan Schell (who died almost exactly a year ago at the age of 70), a laugh-a-decade tome in which the late New Yorker alumnus attempted to lay down, in writing, every single one of the ten billion or so drawbacks to having nuclear weapons on the planet.
The Cold War was back at bursting point by 1982, with the bullish, fist-shaking Reagan in charge of America and a succession of sick old men in the USSR - Brezhnev had just died and been replaced by the aloof, unknowable Yuri Andropov, whose distant demeanour was partly down to being a former head of the KGB, and partly down to the fact that he spent the majority of his tenure in hospital with failing kidneys. (Meanwhile, his successor, Konstantin Chernenko - who he'd ironically been manouvered to the leadership to block - was actively dying by the time he actually got the job and lasted even less time) Reagan, meanwhile, was actively and deliberately escalating the situation, particularly in 1983 when he declared the USSR an evil empire and proposed the construction of a magic laser space umbrella which, despite being literally impossible, successfully reignited the nuclear arms race as a concept. The same year, the BBC made "Threads", the most dispiriting movie ever made. To see it is to understand despair.
In the midst of all this Protect and Survive bothering came The Fate of the Earth, which might as well have been called "How You Will Die". Schell forensically and dispassionately deconstructs the potential consequences of a nuclear exchange, from the initial shockwave levelling cities to the potential disintegration of the ozone in the atmosphere (leaving the Earth uninhabitable bar the oceans), and comes to the unavoidable conclusion that the detonation of even one or two of these things would basically be the full stop for the human race and probably 97% of life on Earth.
This is an advert for that bag of chuckles, and as you'd expect, it contains zero pink fluffy unicorns dancing on rainbows. Instead. it depicts an extended metaphor within another extended metaphor, interspersed with effusive praise from the newspapers and suchlike, concluding with the title and author flatly stated in small text, because this is an important work, yeah? Not necessarily what you want to bring down to the shelter, though, except maybe as a manual. Not least because it provides about 900 reasons that building a shelter would be completely pointless.

Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev (Russian: Михаи́л Серге́евич Горбачёв, tr. Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachyov; born 2 March 1931) is a former Soviet statesman, having served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991, and as the country's head of state from 1988 until its dissolution in 1991. He was the only general secretary in the history of the Soviet Union to have been born after the October Revolution. Alongside East Germany's Egon Krenz and Poland's Wojciech Jaruzelski, Gorbachev is one of the last surviving leaders of an Eastern Bloc state as of 2014.
Gorbachev was born in Stavropol Krai into a peasant Ukrainian--Russian family, and in his teens operated combine harvesters on collective farms. He graduated from Moscow State University in 1955 with a degree in law. While he was at the university, he joined the Communist Party, and soon became very active within it. In 1970, he was appointed the First Party Secretary of the Stavropol Kraikom, First Secretary to the Supreme Soviet in 1974, and appointed a member of the Politburo in 1979. Within three years of the deaths of Soviet Leaders Leonid Brezhnev, Yuri Andropov, and Konstantin Chernenko, Gorbachev was elected General Secretary by the Politburo in 1985. Before he reached the post, he had occasionally been mentioned in western newspapers as a likely next leader and a man of the younger generation at the top level.
Gorbachev's policies of openness and restructuring as well as summit conferences with United States President Ronald Reagan and his reorientation of Soviet strategic aims contributed to the end of the Cold War, removed the constitutional role of the Communist Party in governing the state, and inadvertently led to the dissolu

A Russia After Putin
Even if the president reappears, his absence reveals the chilling degree to which he has consolidated power in the country.
Vladimir Putin's mysterious sabbatical from public life is now in its eighth day, and, still, nobody knows where he is. The Kremlin, whose spokesman Dmitry Peskov has the unfortunate task of insisting nothing is wrong, denies that the Russian president is incapacitated. On Saturday, Moscow announced that Putin will surface on Monday in St. Petersburg, where he's scheduled to meet Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambaev. The meeting would be Putin's first public appearance since March 5, when he met with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.
Putin's reemergence will, probably to the disappointment of journalists everywhere, put a slew of salacious rumors to rest. Even if the president resumes power as before, however, his extended absence raises an uncomfortable question. What would happen in Russia, hypothetically, if Putin dies?
Until this week, analysts had little reason to contemplate the scenario. Putin is just 62 years old and, as Russian propaganda regularly reminds the world, in good shape. But nobody expected Kim Jong Il, just 69, to die young—until he did in 2011. And there's even a precedent in recent Russian history. Three leaders of the Soviet Union, Leonid Brezhnev, Yuri Andropov, and Konstantin Chernenko, died in rapid succession from 1982 to 1985, a series of events that brought the reformist Mikhail Gorbachev to power.
Given Russia's size, nuclear arsenal, and regional influence, the passing of its leader would have significant consequences—no matter who it is. But a Putin death could be particularly destabilizing. Since assuming Russia's presidency in 2000 following the resignation of predecessor Boris Yeltsin, who had appointed the then-unknown ex-KGB officer Prime Minister just months before, Putin has spent the next 15 years centralizing state power. Many democratic institutions established in the 1990s—such as the popular election of regional officials—exist just in memory, and the only office for which Russians vote directly is Putin's itself. Putin controls Russia's television, where 90 percent of the population receives its news, and strictly censors the Internet. Political opposition in Russia is largely weak and fragmented—outspoken critics end up in prison or dead, a trend continued with the assassination of Boris Nemtsov in Moscow last month.

The Era of Stagnation (also called the Period of Stagnation, Stagnation Period, Stagnation Era, the Brezhnevian Stagnation, or the Brezhnev Stagnation) was a period of economic, political, and social stagnation in the Soviet Union, which began during the rule of Leonid Brezhnev (1964–1982) and continued under Yuri Andropov (1982–1984) and Konstantin Chernenko (1984–1985). This period ended when Mikhail Gorbachev, who succeeded Chernenko, introduced his policies of glasnost, perestroika, uskoreniye, and demokratizatsiya, leading to the Revolutions of 1989 and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Historians, scholars, and specialists are uncertain what caused the stagnation, with some arguing that the planned economy suffered from systemic flaws which inhibited growth. Others have argued that the lack of reform, or the high expenditures on defence, led to stagnation. The majority of scholars set the starting year for economic stagnation at 1975, although some claim that it began as early as the 1960s. Social stagnation began much earlier, with Brezhnev's rise to power, his revoking of several of the relatively liberal reforms of his predecessor, Nikita Khrushchev, and partial rehabilitation of Stalinist policies. The social stagnation can therefore be traced to the Sinyavsky–Daniel trial in 1965. Politically, the stagnation began with the establishment of a gerontocracy, which came into being as part of the policy of stability. Brezhnev has been criticised posthumously for doing too little to improve the economic situation. Throughout his rule, no major reforms were initiated and the few proposed reforms were either very modest or opposed by the majority of the Soviet leadership. The reform-minded Chairman of the Council of Ministers (Government), Alexei Kosygin, introduced two modest reforms in the 1970s after the failure of his more radical 1965 reform, and attempted to reverse the trend of declining growth. By the 1970s, Brezhnev had consolidated enough power to stop any "radical" reform-minded attempts by Kosygin. When Brezhnev died in November 1982, the Soviet Union he handed over to his successor, Andropov, was much less dynamic than when he assumed power. During his short rule, Andropov introduced modest reforms; he died little more than a year later in February 1984. Chernenko, his successor, continued much of Andropov's policies; whether those policies improved the economic situation in the country is still debated amongst scholars.

Celebrating Comrade Lenin, the Great October Socialist Revolution and the Soviet Union
It was on the 7th of November, 1917, Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks wrestled Russia out of the grips of a fascist Tsar, and turned the country into a socialist state. And under Stalin, it turned into a mighty industrialized nation capable of deafeating the Nazis some years later. Today, we honour Lenin, the Great October Socialist Revolution and the Soviet Union/Russia. Of course, with the Old Style calender, the date of the revolution works out to about the 25th of October, now modernized as the 7th of November.

Era of Stagnation
