Takeo Fukuda(福田 赳夫,Fukuda Takeo?, January 14, 1905 – July 5, 1995) was a Japanesepolitician and the 42d Prime Minister of Japan (67th administration) from December 24, 1976 to December 7, 1978.
In 1952, Fukuda was elected to the House of Representatives representing the third district of Gunma. He was elected party secretary in 1957 and served as Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (1959–69), Minister of Finance (1969–71), Minister of Foreign Affairs (1971–73), and Director of the Economic Planning Agency (1974–76). He was a candidate for prime minister in 1972 but lost to Kakuei Tanaka.
He took over the presidency of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) from Takeo Miki after the party's poor showing in the 1976 election. It remained in office, but relied on the support of minor parties to maintain a parliamentary majority. Although he was regarded as a conservative and a hawk on foreign policies, Fukuda drew international criticism when he caved in to the demands of a group of terrorists who hijacked Japan Airlines Flight 472, saying "Jinmei wa chikyû yori omoi (The value of a human life outweighs the Earth)."

10. Wide interview
STORYLINE:
Former Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui arrived in Japan on Sunday on a trip that marks a diplomatic coup for the isolated island but threatens to exacerbate tense relations between Japan and China.
Lee flew into Kansai International Airport in Osaka, two days after a divided Japanese government agreed to allow him to visit to seek medical treatment for a heart condition.
The decision enraged China, which believes the 78-year-old retired president is visiting Japan to try to drum up support for Taiwan's independence.
Taipei however, insists that the visit is not political in nature.
In a statement Sunday, Taiwanese spokesman Lo Fu Chien said the visit should not damage the relationship between China and Japan.
Lee is scheduled to travel from Osaka, 255 miles west of Tokyo, to the nearby city of Kurashiki on Tuesday to visit a hospital there before returning to Taiwan on Thursday.
Tokyo is believed to have set conditions for Lee's stay, stipulating that he will not engage in any political activity and restricting him from travelling beyond the hospital.

An historic area of Beijing, which was once home to teahouses and traditional courtyard living, has been re-opened on Thursday after undergoing a massive facelift in time for the Olympics.
But not everyone is happy the Qianmen area has been transformed into a commercial strip for big brand stores like Nike, Starbucks and Rolex.
Some residents, who had to leave their homes to make way for the redevelopment, are still fighting the move.
One former neighbourhood resident who had been planning to display a protest banner on the street today, was surrounded by plainclothes local officials when AP reporters tried to talk to him.
A woman, who claimed she was evicted from her home in the Qianmen area, told reporters she's still fighting her case.
"Today I really miss my home because my house used to be here. I lived here for 50 years and because of the demolition my hair is now all grey because I'm worried that I don't have a home anymore," said Li Wenqing.
Across the road from Qianmen, 57-year-old Sun Ruonan and her family is resisting the demolition of her home as part of the city's redevelopment.
She claims scare tactics have been used to evict her.
One night last year, she claimed, a bulldozer slammed into the building. She also alleged neighbours notify officials whenever she has visitors.
Her claims could not be verified.
But according to heritage officials like Wang Yuwei, the destruction of traditional courtyard neighbourhoods has greatly reduced in recent years as preservation efforts gain ground.

The Vietnamese Vice-Foreign Minister, Phan Hien, is officially in Tokyo to hold talks with Japanese leaders including Premier Takeo Fukuda. However, the trip by the Vietnamese has turned into an official announcement of the re-adjustment of Vietnamese foreign policy. Japanese officials have said that they are impressed by what appears to be a change of attitude by Hanoi which they believe has been prompted by its now more exposed position following the continuing deterioration of relations between Vietnam and China

Taiwan’s Wang Chien-ming continues to hold out hope for a return to the major leagues after languishing in Triple-A for the Reds and the White Sox organizations this past season. In an exclusive interview with FTV, he discussed the emotions he felt last season and what motivates him to keep attempting a comeback. Wang Chien-ming spent the last season on the Reds Triple-A team, recording eight wins. Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough to warrant a promotion to the major leagues. Wang elaborated on some of the feelings he encountered last year.Wang Chien-mingTaiwanese PitcherAt that stage, the team had their considerations, such as bringing up young pitchers to see if they can use them next year. That left me a little disappointed.Next year, Wang will play for the Atlanta Braves organization. He said he personally gave himself two years to make it back to the major leagues, potentially making this year his last.Wang Chien-mingTaiwanese PitcherI want to work hard and complete this season, no matter if I get called up or not. Later, I will make another decision. With the New York Yankees, Wang achieved 19 wins in consecutive years, which would be the high point of his career. This year, Wang says he will work hard as he awaits another opportunity to get back to the big leagues.
