Jonas Malheiro Savimbi (August 3, 1934 – February 22, 2002) was an Angolan political leader. He founded and led UNITA, a movement that first waged a guerrilla war against Portuguese colonial rule, 1966–1974, then confronted the rival MPLA during the decolonization conflict, 1974-75, and after independence in 1975 fought the ruling MPLA in the Angolan Civil War until his death in a clash with government troops in 2002.
Savimbi was born on August 3, 1934, in Munhango, Moxico Province, a small town on the Benguela Railway, and raised in Bié Province. Savimbi's father, Lote, was a stationmaster on Angola's Benguela railway line and a preacher of the Protestant "Igreja Evangélica Congregacional de Angola", founded and maintained by American missionaries. Both his parents were members of the Bieno group of the Ovimbundu, the people who later served as Savimbi's major political base.
The Angolan Civil War was a major civil conflict in the Southern African state of Angola, beginning in 1975 and continuing, with some interludes, until 2002. The war began immediately after Angola became independent from Portugal in November 1975. Prior to this, a decolonisation conflict had taken place in 1974–75, following the Angolan War of Independence. The Civil War was primarily a struggle for power between two former liberation movements, the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA). At the same time, it served as a surrogate battleground for the Cold War, due to heavy intervention by major opposing powers such as the Soviet Union and the United States.
Each organisation had different roots in the Angolan social fabric and mutually incompatible leaderships, despite their sharing the aim of ending colonial occupation. Although both the MPLA and UNITA had socialist leanings, for the purpose of mobilising international support they posed as "Marxist-Leninist" and "anti-communist", respectively. A third movement, the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA), having fought the MPLA alongside UNITA during the war for independence and the decolonization conflict, played almost no role in the Civil War. Additionally, the Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda (FLEC), an association of separatist militant groups, fought for the independence of the province of Cabinda from Angola.

Angolan rebel leader Jonas Savimbi arrived in South Africa Wednesday to meet President Nelson Mandela and - he says - to learn from South Africa's example of national reconciliation.
Angola has been wracked by civil war for 19 years but the leaders of the two warring factions met for talks earlier in the month, paving the way for a possible lasting peace.
Angolan rebel leader Jonas Savimbi arrived for a two-day visit to South Africa Wednesday and was met by Foreign Minister Alfred Nzo.
They greeted like old friends even though Mandela's African National Congress long supported Savimbi's foe - Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos.
The two men led sides in a civil war that has lasted nearly twenty years and killed 500,000 people and made thousands of others refugees.
Despite a multi-party election in 1992 fighting continued until an uneasy truce was called last November and the United Nations is sending in a large peacekeeping force.
SOUND BITE:
"The people on both sides are tired of war. The government knows that the people they don't want war anymore."
SUPER CAPTION: Jonas Savimbi, Rebel Angolan Leader
Savimbi and Dos Santos agreed at an historic meeting on May 6 to work together to ensure peace in Angola.
This time both sides are more confident that one day the southern African country - rich in oil and diamonds - will flourish.
SOUND BITE:
"There is a lot of pressure to say stop the war, start talking, we want stability in our country. I think that will lead us to find a final solution."
SUPER CAPTION: Jonas Savimbi, Rebel Angolan Leader
Savimbi later held talks with Mandela at the official presidential residence.
He hopes to learn from South Africa's relatively bloodless transfer of power following the dismantling of apartheid and the country's first all-party elections.
Given his experience of including his foes in his government, Mandela's view is that peace will not work in Angola unless Savimbi is included in the government.
SOUNDBITE:
"He and President De Soto have made a breakthrough in Lusaka. And one of the questions I am going to raise with the doctor is whether this remarkable advance in Lusaka is now going to be expressed in the structure of government in Angola because any agreement which is not going to be reflected in the actual structure of government cannot bring about peace."
SUPERCAPTION: Nelson Mandela, President of South Africa
Savimbi also wanted to reassure the legendary African leader that he means business and that he is not going to scuttle peace efforts.
SOUNDBITE:
"We came here with open minds to listen, to express our views, anxieties but most of all we want to assure the President of South Africa that we could not come here to meet such a great son of Africa and tell lies."
SUPERCAPTION: Jonas Savimbi, Rebel Angolan Leader
The moral force of Mandela's leadership in South Africa is likely to have had a positive effect on all the players in Angola .
The fact that he has forgiven his foes and his jailers, implies the Angolan players should do the same.

The Angolan Civil War was a major civil conflict in the Southern African state of Angola, beginning in 1975 and continuing, with some interludes, until 2002. The war began immediately after Angola became independent from Portugal in November 1975. Prior to this, a decolonization conflict had taken place in 1974--75, following the Angolan War of Independence.
Although both the MPLA and UNITA had socialist leanings, for the purpose of mobilizing international support they posed as "Marxist-Leninist" and "anti-communist", respectively.
The 27-year war can be divided roughly into three periods of major fighting -- between 1975 and 1991, 1992 and 1994, and 1998 and 2002 -- broken up by fragile periods of peace. By the time the MPLA finally achieved victory in 2002, an estimated 500,000 people had been killed and over one million internally displaced. The war devastated Angola's infrastructure, and dealt severe damage to the nation's public administration, economic enterprises, and religious institutions.
The Angolan Civil War reached such dimensions due to the combination of Angola's violent internal dynamics and massive foreign intervention. Both the Soviet Union and the United States considered the conflict critical to the global balance of power and to the outcome of the Cold War, and they and their allies put significant effort into making it a proxy war between their two power blocs. The Angolan Civil War ultimately became one of the bloodiest, longest, and most prominent armed conflicts of the Cold War. Moreover, the Angolan conflict became entangled with the Second Congo War in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as with the Namibian War of Independence.

Savimbi, an Angolan government source said on Saturday (19/11).The
source said a UNITA commander had told the United Nations Savimbi

in Zambia's capital Lusaka and his government promised UNITA rebel
leader Jonas Savimbi safe passage if he would come to sign a peace

SOUTH AFRICA: NELSON MANDELA MEETS ANGOLAN REBEL LEADER SAVIMBI
Natural Sound
South Africa's President Nelson Mandela met Angolan rebel leader Jonas Savimbi on Tuesday to help seal an end to two decades of war in Angola.
Savimbi, whose future role in Angola remains uncertain, was given a warm welcome by Mandela, who interrupted a holiday to meet him.
President Mandela greets Jonas Savimbi a warm welcome as he arrived for the second day of talks Tuesday, near Umtata, in South Africa's Transkei region.
In an increasing role as an intermediary in African trouble spots, President Mandela interrupted his annual holiday to hold talks with the opposition rebel leader.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner has been advising Savimbi and Angolan President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos behind the scenes on the formation of a reconciliation government in the war-ravaged country.
Over 5-hundred thousand people have died Africa's longest running war, which broke out the eve of the nation's independence from Portugal in 1975.
Savimbi is hoping to win Mandela's backing of a reconciliation government.
The meeting got underway nine hours behind schedule on Monday in President Mandela's home town of Gunu, near Umtata.
The delay - caused by bad weather conditions in Angola - didn't deter the high profile delegates, Mandela's top cabinet ministers and the commanders of Savimbi's rebel group.
The naming of a government of national reconciliation in Angola is just 17 days away.
But Savimbi's role, if any, has not been announced.
His participation in the U-N-sponsored peace process is viewed as crucial.
Savimbi has so far rejected a government offer of one of two vice president's posts.
His rebel group - known as UNITA, the National union for the Total Independence of Angola - wants a special status for him as leader of the opposition.
After the meeting the delegates were shown around Mandela's holiday house overlooking the sweeping grasslands of his native Transkei region.
Talks between President Mandela and the rebel leaders are expected to continue Wednesday.

SOUTH AFRICA: TALKS CONTINUE TO END AFRICA'S LONGEST WAR
English/Nat
Angolan rebel leader Jonas Savimbi committed himself on Wednesday to a plan to end Africa's longest-running war.
With the naming of Angola's new government just 15 days away, Savimbi said he would participate in a reconciliation government.
But Savimbi's role in this government remains in question.
Talks to end Africa's longest war appeared on track Wednesday.
After two days of talks with South African President Nelson Mandela, who's mediating between the Angolan President and the rebels, Jonas Savimbi agreed to take part in a reconciliation government.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"With the support and the help of President Mandela we have discovered ways and avenues to solve that problem. As it stands here I am committed to participate in the effort of the reconciliation, reconstruction and the development of Angola. I can not do that if I am out, so I will be in."
SUPER CAPTION: Jonas Savimbi, Angolan rebel leader
But Savimbi's role in the reconciliation government remains a matter of discussion.
The UNITA leader reportedly wants a special status as leader of the opposition.
If a role cannot be found, the whole peace deal could unravel.
South African Deputy President Thabo Mbeki said his country would continue to mediate between the two sides.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We discussed the question of the status and the role of the President of UNITA (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola ). As you know this matter is a matter that has been discussed with the Angolan government and Unita. So it's necessary to continue that discussion, so what will happen is that we ourselves will interact with the Angolan government on this question. And I think that in the course of the process of that interaction it will then be possible to involve a position that will be commonly agreed, which would address all matters."
SUPER CAPTION: Thabo Mbeki, South African Deputy President
A previous attempt to end the fighting in 1991 collapsed after Savimbi lost a presidential election and returned to the battlefield.

In this mission, Alex Mason is called out of retirement by Jason Hudson to rescue their old friend, Frank Woods, who has been captured by Raul Menendez in Angola during that country's brutal civil war.
The mission initiates with Alex Mason vainly attempting to rescue an ally trapped in a burning Buffel. Mason tries to enlist assistance from UNITA commander Jonas Savimbi, but the latter remarks that it is too late as the militiaman succumbs to the flames. After offering Mason a machete, Savimbi notes that mortar fire from MPLA positi

CENTRAFRIQUE Documentaire sur BOKASSA QUI A PASSE SUR FRANCE 2
Kampvuur 'Jim in Afrika'.
So eindig hy in Oshakati.
Dankie Jim.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II - Campaña - Primera Misión - Victoria pírrica

Call Of Duty Black Ops 2 Campaign Walkthrough Part 1-Pyrrhic Victory (COD BO2)
"Pyrrhic Victory" is the first campaign mission in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, and the first set in the 1980s.
After offering Mason a machete, Savimbi notes that mortar fire from MPLA positions indicates their rivals' pending assault and rallies his troops for a counter-offensive.
Advancing in the surviving Buffels and a squadron of Eland-90 armored cars, Mason and the UNITA contingent halt upon encountering MPLA infantry. As the battle begins Savimbi charges Mason with eliminating the opposing mortar positions while Jason Hudson, providing aerial reconnaissance in an Alouette gunship, conducts a strafing run. Mason assumes control of the helicopter's weapons system, subsequently annihilating a unit of attacking T-62 tanks. Hudson comes under fire from several technicals in the area, which Mason also dispatches. His gunship returns and a second tank company is obliterated. At this point Savimbi concludes that the MPLA has been decisively weakened and determines to finish them. UNITA's final push successfully wipes out the remaining MPLA forces.
Hudson lands to pick up Mason; Savimbi informs them that their missing quarry, Frank Woods, is being held on a transport barge in the Cubango River. They depart to rescue Woods, but over the Cubango the Alouette is crippled by an RPG. Hijacking the barge, Mason utilises two mounted DShK machine guns to take out pursuing MPLA patrol craft. Once these gunboats have been repulsed the Americans uncover a disoriented Woods, trapped in a shipping container with several rotting corpses. Their reunion is cut short when an Angolan Mi-24 Hind attempts to sink the barge. The Hind is downed with Valkyrie Rockets, but not before Woods and Hudson run aground. Bearing Woods, they flee into the nearby jungle, stumbling across a communications outpost manned by Cuban military advisers. Hudson proposes that they use any radios there to contact UNITA for evacuation.
Infiltrating the outpost, Mason approaches radio operator Raul Menendez. Menendez destroys his equipment rather than surrender it, and tries to stab Mason when the latter uses him as a human shield. In the ensuing struggle, Menendez is shot in the face while Hudson, Mason, and Woods make a hurried getaway - holding back their assailants until they can reach the river. There, a second Hind confronts them: this aircraft is revealed to be Savimbi's exfil. As Hudson boards he is wounded by a Cuban soldier, who receives his final comeuppance from Woods as the trio make their escape.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II, abbreviated as COD: BO2, or simply BO2, is a first-person shooter developed by Treyarch and published by Activision. This is the ninth main installment for the Call of Duty franchise. The story takes place across two separate arcs, one recounting events in the 1980s, and the other following characters in the year 2025. The 1980s story arc follows the exploits of Alex Mason, fighting in a proxy war in Angola whilst suffering from a disorder as a result of his brainwashing in Vorkuta. Viktor Reznov will reportedly return in this section of the game, and it has been suggested that his friendship with Mason will continue to be explored. This portion of the game chronicles the rise of Raul Menendez, the primary antagonist of the game in the 2025 chapter. Known locations in this section are Angola, Afghanistan, Panama and parts of Central America. In 2025, a cyberattack targets the Chinese economy, crippling the Chinese Stock Exchange. In retaliation for this, the Chinese government has banned the export of rare earth elements, sparking a "Second Cold War" between the United States and the People's Republic of China. During an invasion of Los Angeles, David Mason - the son of Alex Mason - and a team from the United States Navy Special Warfare Development Group must escort the American and French presidents to safety as they come under attack from automated weapons and Menendez's men. In the time since the 1980s, Raul Menendez has styled himself as the leader of the Cordis Die, a populist faction hailed as the champions of victims of economic inequality. In his role as their leader, Menendez has taken control of the "keys" to the armed forces, hijacking the United States' automated weapons systems and turning them against their masters. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Frank Woods has survived his encounter with Lev Kravchenko and escaped from Hanoi. He has taken refuge in a secret location known as "The Vault" and has anticipated Menendez's rise to prominence. Woods serves as the narrator for the 2025 story arc. Known locations are Los Angeles, The Vault, Singapore, Yemen and Cayman Trench. There will be significant points within the single-player campaign where the player is essentially given control over the course the game will take. It won't be a simple "A, B or C" choice either, it will be more expansive than that, for example, not protecting a certain character won't lead to a mission failure, instead it will change the course the game will take.
Campaign Missions of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 include: Pyrrhic Victory, Celerium, Old Wounds, Time and Fate, Fallen Angel, Karma, Suffer with Me, Achilles' Veil, Odysseus, Cordis Die, Judgment Day.
Characters of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 include: David Mason, Harper, Salazar, Crosby, Frank Woods, Alex Mason, Jason Hudson, Jones, Samuels, U.S. President, Johnson, Raul Menendez, DeFalco, Tian-Zhao, Anderson, Nelson, Terrorist leader, Viktor Reznov, Jonas Savimbi, Briggs.

These men are the cream of a large crop of megalomanic and psychotic 'leaders' that have plagued the African continent for the past forty years. The heartache, misery and suffering caused by these men is truly appalling.
In order of appearance:
Mobutu Sese Seko, Sani Abacha, Idi Amin Dada, Hastings Kamuzu Banda, Siad Barre, Jean Bedel Bokassa, P.W. Botha, Gnassingbe Eyadema, Muammar Gaddafi, Felix Houphouet-Boigny, Robert Mugabe, Macias Nguema, Jonas Savimbi, Ian Smith and Charles Taylor.
The $300,000,000 Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro represents the squandering of the continents resources by these lunatics.
Info:
1. Two acres of hand-blown French stained glass windows.
2. Individual air conditioning ducts at each of the 7000 seats.
3. On the average Sunday about 200 people attend mass in the largest church on earth.
4. Four of the basilica's 272 gargantuan columns contain elevators that can carry 10 people to a balcony beneath the dome.
5. 7.4 acre marble-floored courtyard.

A Guerra Episodio 11

So eindig hy in Oshakati.

"Pyrrhic Victory" is the first campaign mission in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, and the first set in the 1980s.
