A 38-year-old Melton West man is in custody after an alleged hit-run in Deer Park on Friday night which left a man dead.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Belle Nolan said Homicide Squad detectives were currently on the scene.

"Police were called to Ballarat Road, near Robinsons Road, about 9.45pm [on Friday] following reports of a collision, with a driver behaving erratically," Ms Nolan said.

"When officers arrived, they found a deceased man on the road.

"It's believed he had been run over by a vehicle."

Ms Nolan said although the body was yet to be formally identified, investigators believed it was that of a 43-year-old Deer Park man.

"Detectives arrested a 38-year-old Melton West man at the scene," she said.

"He is currently assisting investigators with their enquiries."

Police are investigating the man's death and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppers.com.au.
