Voice of America (VOA) is the official external broadcast institution of the United States federal government. It is one of five civilian U.S. international broadcasters working under the umbrella of the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG). VOA provides a wide range of programming for broadcast on radio and TV and the Internet outside of the U.S. in 43 languages. VOA produces about 1,500 hours of news and feature programming each week for an estimated global audience of 123 million people, "to promote freedom and democracy and to enhance understanding through multimedia communication of accurate, objective, and balanced news, information and other programming about America and the world to audiences overseas." Its day-to-day operations are supported by the International Broadcasting Bureau (IBB).
A 1976 law signed by President Gerald Ford requires VOA to "serve as a consistently reliable and authoritative source of news." The VOA Charter states: "VOA news will be accurate, objective and comprehensive." However, the service has been criticized as an instrument of American propaganda.

Can you hear me? wake up!
Where's the voice of america?
Somebody help me, we gotta stop a crime
I been betrayed by my own kind
I been quiet, too quiet
While across the borderline
We die
Can you hear me? wake up!
Where's the voice of america?
I know that we knew right from wrong once upon a time
Everything we stood for has been compromised
I been quiet, too quiet
While across our borderline
My people lie
Can you hear me? wake up!
Where's the voice of america?
You're quiet, too quiet
Are you still alive
Inside
Can you hear me? wake up!
We're the voice of america
We're the voice of america
We're the voice of america
We're the voice of america
I heard you on the radio, some other time
From some forgotten studio, way down the lines
So long, so long I've waited now, to hear you again
That song, that song will still remain, it's become a friend
And now, the tears are in my eyes, the sound you can't disguise
The truth comes back from lies, and all I want to hear
Voice of America, oh America
Voice of America, oh America
And then you came in stereo, calling to me
And so I watch the videos, across the TV
That sound, still ringing in my ears, from a decade ago
Around, around my head, the sound from my radio
I thought, that after all these year, the tears of the growing fears
That I would never hear, never again
Voice of America, oh America
Voice of America, oh America
Voice of America, oh America
A man on the radio wakes me from sleep
I've tried not to listen, but my conscience is weak
I've come up for air, 'cause I really can't breathe
Sometimes I think that he's talking to me...
The voice of America
The call of a stranger reach in to me
The cry of a soldier
The sound of a mother
Makes my heart weep...
I come home at night and turn on the tv
And the face of a woman stares out from the screen
I try not to look, but the truth still remains
Her eyes speak the words that embody my pain...
The voice of America
The call of a stranger reach in to me
The cry of a soldier
The sound of a mother
Makes my heart weep...
So I drove to the ocean
And lay down on the sand
To commune with the silence, the waves and the land
But someone was shouting to me
From the hollows below the ground...
It's the cry of a man on the street
It's a mother, it's a soldier, it's a priest
It's a boy in a gang with a gun
It's a voice and it's coming from everyone
It's the tears of a child
And the sound of a woman who can't speak
It's the old people talking about the young girls
Laughing at the young boys playing on the beach
It's your lover's voice and the kid that you can never teach
The brother you can't reach
It touches you and all that you can never see
It's the choir boy's song and the man who's never coming home
It's a drum, it's a nun
We are one single voice
Make the choice and rejoice
With the voice of America!
The voice of America
The call of a stranger reach in to me
The cry of a soldier
The sound of a mother
Makes my heart weep...
(We all connect at the heart of it
We all play our own part in it
You are never alone you know
You are finally coming home...)
The voice of America
The call of a stranger reach in to me
The cry of a soldier
The sound of a mother
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars and they're all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens ev'ry day
I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the
facts
It's not easy facin' up when your whole world is black
No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the settin' sun
My love will laugh with me before the mornin' comes
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
Hmm, hmm, hmm,...
I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black
Yeah!
