The hospitality and tourism sector workforce currently accounts for 2 million jobs or seven percent of the working population (one in every 14 jobs). The core hospitality economy (defined as hotels, restaurants and related services, catering and event management) has an estimated Gross value added (GVA £m) of 974,082. The latest figures show there were 181,500 individual business sites operating across the hospitality and tourism sector. Restaurants, hotels, and pubs, bars and nightclubs comprise the greatest number of businesses and represent the greater share (70 percent) of the sector's GVA. More than a third of sector businesses (35 percent) expect their workforce to increase in the coming year. Longer-term employment projections suggest that by 2020 the sector's workforce will have grown by six percent, which is higher than the projected increase for the economy as a whole. Apprenticeships are a combination of practical work experience integrated with job specific technical and theoretic skills and where necessary English and Maths skills. Apprenticeships are available to all employees or new entrants aged from 16 to 70. Government funding is available for some apprenticeship programmes subject to eligibility requirements, primarily the right to work in this country and the applicant does not have a degree (from any country). Where the government does not fund an apprenticeship, it may be purchased directly from HIT by the employer or employee, or the employee may be eligible for a student loan from the government's 'Advanced Learning Loan' scheme run by the Student Loan Company. Technical and theoretical knowledge and understanding tests the apprentice's theoretical knowledge, usually by on-line tests taken at the workplace or research projects. Basic English, Maths and ICT Potential apprentices are tested by HIT for their levels of numeracy and literacy before starting a programme. Those without GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above will undertake a Maths and English Essential Skills programme. Several apprenticeships require an appropriate level of ICT computer skills. Employment rights and responsibilities (ERR) Enables the apprentice to comprehend their rights and responsibilities at the workplace and understand the wider world of the hotel and catering industry. Apprenticeships tailored to your business The frameworks may sound very complicated at a first glance, but HIT's delivery expertise seamlessly delivers all the components. HIT will tailor the apprenticeship framework to the specific requirements of your business. Typically, each apprenticeship framework has a range of mandatory and optional units within the practical components (NVQ) and knowledge components. Selection is made with the employer and apprentice based on the development needs and the business requirements. If all the skills required for your business are not covered in the standard framework, using the 'Innovation Code', additional NVQ units could be added.
