Elephant
Elephants can exhibit bouts of aggressive behavior and engage in destructive actions against humans. In Africa, groups of adolescent elephants damaged homes in villages after cullings in the 1970s and 1980s. Because of the timing, these attacks have been interpreted as vindictive. In India, male elephants regularly enter villages at night, destroying homes and killing people. Elephants killed around 300 people between 2000 and 2004 in Jharkhand, while in Assam 239 people were reportedly killed between 2001 and 2006. Local people have reported their belief that some elephants were drunk during their attacks, although officials have disputed this explanation. Purportedly drunk elephants attacked an Indian village a second time in December 2002, killing six people, which led to the killing of about 200 elephants by locals.

Ouidah, Benin and a bit of VooDoo
After my bout with malaria in Togo, I pushed across to the country of Benin. On my way to the capital of Benin, I made a stop at the historical town of Ouidah. Here in Ouidah, the slave trade was once the largest form of industry. Slaves would be taken in to town on boat, and then forced to walk the last couple miles to the sea where they would be picked up and shipped out. Ouidah too is meant

Benin Travel Video - If youre heading to West Africa to unearth lost treasure, look no further than Benin. This club-shaped country, on the western edge of Nigeria, was once one of the most powerful empires in Africa -- the Dahomey kingdom. The ruins of the Dahomeyans palaces and temples can be seen in Abomey, while Ouidah is a poignant reminder of where their riches came from: the slave trade. The Route dEsclaves in Ouidah was the last walk on African soil for slaves bound for Brazil and the Caribbean. Museums here and in Porto Novo, Benins lagoon-side capital, examine the resultant Afro-Brazilian society and culture. Cotonou, on the other hand, is urban Africa at its most frazzling and polluted - but is not without its own charms, a lively nightlife and good shopping being a couple of them.
Regardless of the ill-gotten Dahomeyan gains glittering in the Musée Historique dAbomey, there are plenty of treasures on Benins dusty streets and palm-fringed beaches. This is the birthplace of voodoo, the countrys national religion, exported by the slaves and distorted by Hollywood. Voodoo is an important part of everyday life and most towns bear signs of it, such as the fetish markets stocked with the heads and skins of every animal imaginable.
Elephants, lions and crocodiles can be seen in more animated form in the northern wildlife parks, notably Pendjari, one of the best in West Africa. Then there are the stilt villages, home to thousands in the southern lagoons, and the northern tata somba (fortlike mud huts) built by the insular Somba people. Not only is Benin a richly historical and cultural country, this politically stable nation is one of the easiest parts of West Africa to travel in.

September 26, 2011. (Romereports.com) Even though the pope just got back from his four day trip to Germany, his eyes are already set on his next international trip to Africa. From November 18th to the 20th, the pope will visit the country of Benin to meet with African bishops.
Two years ago, their Synod took place. So, during his visit, the pope plans to deliver the post Synodal exhortation to the group, which it use as a guide in the coming years.
During his visit, the pope will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Benin's evangelization. He will also honor the life and work of local cardinal Bernardin Gantin, who served as the Dean of the College of Cardinals for much of John Paul II's pontificate.
Benin (formerly, Dahomey), officially the Republic of Benin, is a country in West Africa. It borders Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east and Burkina Faso and Niger to the north. Its small southern coastline on the Bight of Benin is where a majority of the population is located. The capital of Benin is Porto-Novo, but the seat of government is located in the country's largest city of Cotonou. Benin covers an area of approximately 110,000 square kilometers (42,000 sq mi), with a population of approximately 9.05 million. Benin is a tropical, sub-Saharan nation, highly dependent on agriculture, with substantial employment and income arising from subsistence farming.
The official language of Benin is French, however, indigenous languages such as Fon and Yoruba are commonly spoken. The largest religious group in Benin is Roman Catholicism, followed closely by Muslims, Vodun, and Protestants. Benin is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone, La Francophonie, the Community of Sahel-Saharan States, the African Petroleum Producers Association and the Niger Basin Authority.
From the 17th century to the 19th century, the land of current-day Benin was ruled by the Kingdom of Dahomey. The region became known as the Slave Coast during the early 17th century due to the prevalence of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. In 1892, with the slave trade banned and regional power diminishing, France took over the area and renamed it French Dahomey. In 1960, Dahomey gained full independence from France, bringing in a democratic government for the next 12 years.
Between 1972 and 1990, a self-proclaimed Marxist-Leninist dictatorship called the People's Republic of Benin existed, ushering in a period of repression which ultimately led to an economic collapse. Formation of the Republic of Benin occurred in 1991, bringing in multiparty elections.

Ouidah too is meant to have a strong voodoo history. In this episode of It's my Life 365, I stopped in at the Ouidah Museum for a look into that history, but to be honest I was a little bit disapointed with the museum. I was hoping for it to have more to talk about in regards to the Voodoo culture in Benin.
Anyways, I end the day in the capital of Benin: Cotonou.

Entry from: Ganvie, Benin
Entry Title: "Ganvie Village, Benin, December 14, 2007"
Entry:
"As the largest stilt-village in Africa and home to about 30,000 Tofinu tribe members, all of whom live in dwellings built about two meters above Lake Nokoue, Ganvie is one of Benin's leading tourist magnets. The tribe allegedly came to this fishing-based lifestyle on the lake in the 1600s when the people fled there to escape the slave-hunting Dahomey tribe whose religious customs banned them from venturing into the water.
For us Ganvie was a short drive north from Cotonou and a stop for several hours for a pirogue ride from shore to the stilt village, a boat trip on which we saw plenty of fishermen and hundreds of small boats carrying people back and forth between the village and the mainland, most human-powered. The term "stilt village" conjured up certain images in my mind from previous travels, specifically those of a stilt village I visited in Phan Nga Bay in Thailand in 1996, images that naively led me to ask Dave before we got to Ganvie, "Will we have a chance to get out and walk around in the stilt village?" I soon discovered the answer was "No". Whereas in Thailand I visited a very large densely-populated village where homes and businesses were all connected above the water by virtual wooden streets, in Ganvie the individual houses were widely separated, no more than a few dwellings per cluster, and boats the only means of transport between the clusters. We made a few stops at shops where healthy doses of tourist tack were made available for our shopping convenience, but this being West Africa even the most touristy of sights was far from overrun by commercialism, making for a very pleasant afternoon excursion."

VICE travels to West Africa to rummage through the messy remains of a country ravaged by 14 years of civil war. Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust.

World Crossing Cultures is a newly created project where we are going on a world trip to unite all cultures and religions through the power of Creativity and Love.
Music, Dance, Teather, Paint, Photo and Video or any way of art and creativity is our tool to make this amazing soup of World culture.
So the first trip of this beautiful project is to cross the cultures between the Northern Lights of Europe and the Roots of Africa.
The plan is to go by car from Aland Islands and down to Benin in Africa and make a documentery of the whole trip.
We begin our journey in the beginning of November and gives it 1 month to arrive in Benin. So there is a lot of time on the way to jam and play with all the cultures and people we will be crossing. ;) :D
Until we are leaving for Africa we will activly start crossing cultures with jam sessions, workshops, exhibitions and conserts here on Aland Islands.
Anyone and everyone are welcome to join this project to contribute to the crossing of cultures.
The founders of this projcet are me, Alexander Sundman-Henriques -Aland Islands- and Georges Agbazahou -Benin-

Come sostenere il progetto umanitario "House of the Forgotten – Cotonou" dell'Assoc. A.M.C.1.D. AIUTA BAMBINI ONLUS
con un investimento garantito da Banca Prossima.
Progetto "House of the Forgotten – Cotonou" dell'Associazione A.M.C.1.D.

President Yoweri Museveni has said that a united East Africa and Africa at large is the best mode of ensuring the prosperity of the people of Uganda.
“Integration is the channel to ensure our security. The youth have the task to find out how best to ensure our prosperity and security. If you are young and teaching tribalism, what use are you to society?” he asked. He, therefore, strongly advised the youth of Africa that they must sort the way forward for the future of the continent adding that the youth should use study groups to find solutions to Africa’s challenges.
The President made the remarks last evening at the Kampala Sheraton Hotel as chief guest where, as winner, he also received the Pan Africa Excellence Award at the Africa Leadership Awards 2014 ceremony. A number of individuals and entities were presented with awards in different fields.
The Vice-President, Mr. Edward Kiwanuka Sekandi, presented the award to the President in recognition of Mr. Museveni’s contribution towards the socio-economic transformation of Uganda, Africa and the world. The President’s personal contribution and participation in the liberation of Mozambique, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan and Somalia were also recognized by the Africa Leadership Awards.
President Museveni thanked the organizers for the award. He also commended the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Gender, Mr. Pius Bigirimana, for being a whistle blower against the thieves in the Office of the Prime Minister. Mr. Bigirimana was among the second category of winners. He also paid tribute to another winner, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy Kabagambe Kaliisa who emerged the best Civil Servant of the year 2014 and described him as a person who learns quickly. He noted that Mr. Kabagambe Kaliisa was among the pioneer Ugandans who used the knowledge they gained to discover oil in the country.
Mr. Museveni called on the young people to see the social and economic forces that are operating in Africa saying that there was need to see how best to assist the entrepreneurs to promote their businesses. He tasked the youth to promote business in Africa and noted that when businesses sell a lot, they expand and create more employment opportunities. He, therefore, called on them to work for the promotion of wealth creation through the production sector.
President Museveni said that the youth should work together to develop Africa saying that the continent is the richest area on earth. He appealed to them to become guided missiles in their varied contributions to wealth creation.
Other Award winners included Mioraj Bharot for being a leading entrepreneur. The other Engineer Chris Manyindo, Ambassador Francis Butagyira and General Elly Tumwine were winners in the second category
The award for construction was scooped by ROKO Construction Company; Mr. Andrew Mwenda took one for media while that one for Banking went to Mr. Nicholas Kkwi. The Tourism sector Award was taken by the Big Five Tourism Club while the Foods and Beverages Award went to Riham Group. The late James Mulwana took the Award for the latest legacy.
The Woman Achiever of the year 2014 was Ms. Allen Kagina. Mr. Godfrey Mutabazi received the Award for Communications; Mr. William Byaruhanga won the award for the young entrepreneur. The Health Award went to Case hospital.
The Team leader of Africa Leadership Awards, Mr. Denis Akampurira, saluted the President for his good leadership at both the national and international levels. He observed that Uganda has made tremendous progress in the fight against the HIV/AIDS scourge and Ebola fever. He observed that one of the reasons why Africa had lagged behind in terms of development was because of bad leadership.

This is the sequel of Cycling in Namibia part 1 (North), with 1400 new kilometers from Windhoek to the Orange river, bordering South Africa, in July and August 2014.
The Part 2 (South) features the C26 through the Khomas Highland and the Kupferberg pass, the forever blue skies around the HESS telescope, the very steep Spreetshoogte pass near the Tropic of Capricorn, the incredible views from the dunes over Dead Vlei and Sossusvlei, lots of wildlife and boks cutting my road, lots of scenic gravel roads too, as the Namib desert is a cycling paradise, the D707 around the Tiras mountains that broke a bit of my frame, a sandblasting experience on the road through the Sperrgebiet to Lüderitz, Kolmanskop ghost town and the Garub wild horses, and ends with the gorgeous scenery of the C13 along the Orange river and the Aussenkehr grape farms.

When it comes to assisting the survivors of disasters...
Brethren Disaster Ministries is usually on the scene long after others have packed up and gone home. A long list of Brethren volunteers have already been to New Jersey communities to assist in the rebuilding of homes devastated by Super Storm Sandy. Weekly volunteer groups are scheduled for many months to come. (Contact BDM at http://www.Brethren.org.)
"Brethren Voices" visits the project site in Toms River, NJ., where a volunteer group of people form Indiana are assisting to rebuild homes at two sites in ocean and Monmouth Counties, New Jersey.
A third site is being prepared for the new construction of apartments for Ocean In., a non-profit organization which provides housing for disabled and low income renters. This is the first phase of the construction of 24 units. For BDM, this is a new opportunity to assist the most vulnerable people of the population, those who must rent their homes. For the renter, there is no Federal Government assistance to rebuilding rental properties. Super Storm Sandy, devastated those who rent homes as well as the home owners. (50,000 private homes were lost to the storm as well as 10,000 rentals)
