Severe thunderstorms for eastern NSW

Severe thunderstorms batter the Hunter region overnight.

A low pressure trough deepened over northeastern parts of New South Wales late last night stimulating isolated thunderstorms about the North West Slopes and Plains and Central Tablelands. Overnight this trough continued to deepen with a high pressure ridge feeding moist air to sustain the storm cells.

In the early hours of this morning a Severe Thunderstorm warning (heavy rain, damaging winds and large hail) was issued for the Hunter and Mid North Coast.

24-hour totals revealed that the most substantial falls with these storms happened before 9 o'clock this morning with Forster picking up 49mm in the period from 7am until 9am. Further south Cooranbong saw 43mm, 21mm of which fell in just 10 minutes.

The storms continued this morning focussing further into the Hunter region. Since 9am today Gosford has picked up 32mm, 18mm falling within just 10 minutes. Similarly, Bungwahl has received 28mm so far and Nobbys head has seen 23mm.

The Severe Thunderstorm Warning has now been cancelled for the Hunter as the majority of the cells have moved offshore. Further north however we are starting to see lightning strikes increase on the radar accompanied with yet another Severe Thunderstorm Warning.

Residents of the Mid North Coast, Northern Rivers and Northern Tablelands should be advised that these storms bring the potential for heavy rain and large hail.
