This doc offers a fresh insight into the greatest economic crisis of our age: the one still awaiting us. The financial storm that has rocked the world began brewing in the US when congress pushed the idea of home ownership for all, propping up those who couldn't make the down payments. When it all went wrong the government promised the biggest financial stimulus packages in history and gargantuan bailouts. But what crazed logic is that: propping up debt with more debt? "They're giving alcohol to a drunk: it just sets him up for a bigger hangover." July 2010

1. Why Finance?
Financial Theory (ECON 251) This lecture gives a brief history of the young field of financial theory, which began in business schools quite separate from economics, and of my growing interest in the field and in Wall Street. A cornerstone of standard financial theory is the efficient markets hypothesis, but that has been discredited by the financial crisis of 2007-09. This lecture describes the kinds of questions standard financial theory nevertheless answers well. It also introduces the leverage cycle as a critique of standard financial theory and as an explanation of the crisis. The lecture ends with a class experiment illustrating a situation in which the efficient markets hypothesis works surprisingly well. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Course Introduction 10:16 - Chapter 2. euronews U talk - France's financial transaction tax, a good idea?
www.euronews.com In this edition of U-talk, Michael, from Brussels, asks: "With the tax on financial transactions, what will guarantee that some financial activities will not move outside the EU?" The reponse from Marc Touati, an economist with Assya Compagnie Financière: "I think we must be clear that, if France is the only country to apply the financial transaction tax, Paris as a market, as we know it, will be finished. "That's to say that, very clearly, we already have extremely strong fiscal pressure, very strong regulatory pressure on the Paris financial market, so, at this moment, more and more financial activities will leave France. "Even if this tax is marginal, it would create what I'd call a psychological effect on investments - and we are seeing that already today. "Even without this tax - a lot of French banks have started moving their market activities elsewhere, exactly because there was too much fiscal pressure, too much regulatory pressure. At the same time, as we have, I'd say, extremely weak growth, our companies don't necessarily resort to the markets. "So, what's the danger in this? It's that, of course, more and more activities will relocate outside France, or outside the eurozone, and, when that happens, we're going to have a problem financing the economy. "Because we often forget what finances the economy. Of course it's the banks. But who finances the banks? It's often the markets. Therefore, if we effectively reduce the financial markets to the ...

China News - October 10, 2012: Chinese Finance Chief Skips Japan IMF, World Bank Meetings
In today's NTD China News, China's Finance Minister and top banking official have missed the IMF and World Bank meetings in Japan. After being labeled a security threat by a US Congressional report, Chinese telecoms gear maker Huawei Technologies may be excluded by the Canadian government over those security risks. Chinese democracy activist Tang Baiqiao has urged Li Wangzhi, his former classmate, and the first born of disgraced Chinese official Bo Xilai, to leave China out of fears for his safety. The Chinese regime issues its first judicial reform white paper. It's meant to better protect justice and human rights but one analyst says without judicial and media freedoms no reform will be effective. German authorities say contaminated strawberries that poisoned more than 11000 Germans came from China. A Chinese worker's unusual demand for pay has gone viral on Chinese internet. A Sotheby's auction in Hong Kong for Chinese paintings have brought in double the pre-sale estimates.
