Cognitive Instruction in Mathematical Modeling: Lower-level 3rd grade class (CIMM)
About Cognitive Instruction in Mathematical Modeling, or CIMM: modeling.asu.edu This carefully designed curriculum, developed by Dr. Rob MacDuff and his collaborators, offers a unique and powerful experience of working with quantity, and takes the mystery out of numbers and numerical operations. The CIMM program, while still under construction, is transforming mathematics education to include conceptual understanding (grouping structure), symbol construction (algorithmic manipulations), problem solving and mathematical reasoning. The end result is that all of the notoriously difficult topics (fractions, negative numbers, place value, exponents, etc.) become trivial. It bridges the gap between the concrete mathematics of elementary school and the abstract symbolism of high school.

Japan's FMD spread analysis using a mathematical model
A prediction result of Japan's FMD (foot-and-mouth disease) spreading, using a mathematical model, is shown. Red dots are observed cumulative number of cattle; blue curves are the predictions from the last observed dates. The source data are taken from the Japan Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries from 3/26/2010 to 7/5/2010. Looking at graph in the final picture, we can see that 10km blocking worked effectively. This means that early detection and early network blocking are crucial.

Are Mathematical Models the Cause for Financial Crisis in the Global Economy?
Andrew W. Lo, director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technologys Laboratory for Financial Engineering, breaks down the hot debate brewing about the cause of the current financial crisis. Learn the arguments for and against the claim that complex financial securities and the mathematical models used to manage them should take the blame. Was it systematically programmed or just human nature?

Math Modeling & Disease Dynamics - ICIAM 2011
In July 2011, mathematical scientists from around the world gathered in Vancouver, BC, Canada for the 7th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics - ICIAM 2011. The meeting highlighted the most recent advances in the discipline and demonstrated their applicability to science, engineering and industry, emphasizing industrial applications and computational science in new and emerging topic areas identified by panels of top international scientists. Professors Patrick Nelson, Kerry Landman, and Avner Friedman, graduate student Irina Kareva, and several other speakers outlined various aspects of mathematical modeling in studying biological processes, and hence analyzing disease progression and dynamics.
