The Brahmaputra and the Samye monastery (Tsetang - Tibet - China)
(EN) The Samye Monastery or Samye Gompa is the first Buddhist monastery built in Tibet, was most probably constructed between 775 and 779 CE under the patronage of King Trisong Detsen of Tibet who sought to revitalize Buddhism, which had declined since its introduction by King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century. The monastery is located in Dranang, Shannan Prefecture. It was supposedly modeled on the design of Odantapuri monastery in what is now Bihar, India. The 18th century Puning Temple of Chengde, Hebei, China was modeled after the Samye Compa. According to tradition, the Indian monk Shantarakshita made the first attempt to construct the monastery while promoting his sutra-centric version of Buddhism. Finding the Samye site auspicious he set about to build a structure there. However, the building would always collapse after reaching a certain stage. Terrified, the construction workers believed that there was a demon or obstructive thoughtform in a nearby river making trouble. However, when Shantarakshita's contemporary Padmasambhava arrived from northern India, he was able to subdue the energetic problems obstructing the building of Samye. According to The Fifth Dalai Lama (Pearlman, 2002: p.18), Padmasambhava performed the Vajrakilaya Dance and enacted the rite of 'thread cross' or Namkha to assist King Trisong Deutsen and Shantarakshita clear away obscurations and hindrances in the building of Samye: "The great religious master Padmasambhava performed this dance in ...

Mandala & Meditation Workshop (ArtMatters/Kagyu Samye Dzong)
On a very wet, windy and thunderous 10 December 2007, Kagyu Samye Dzong Meditation group went on a fantastic excursion to Horely UK for a Mandala Workshop hosted very kindly by David Mackenzie-Dewhurst and his partner Jan at the ArtMatters studios. Whilst there we were given a wonderful slide show, overview of the power of mandalas and how they have featured in both our human and natural landscapes, learned the process of colouring sand, shared some yummy lunch, engaged in a little meditation to still our minds, and got on with making mandalas of our own under Davids helpful guidance. If you would like to enquire about Mandalas and the workshops provided by ArtMatters please visit: www.artmatters.nhs.uk and for meditation information, please visit http Thanks to everyone for a lovely day had by all, and special thanks to David and Jan who I'm sure everyone attending would like to say outdid themselves in hospitality, guidance, and creating a fantastic experience we'll remember for a long time. Thank you to all new/regular viewers for watching. Peace!

SAMYE GOMPA - Tibet, China
Samye Gompa, 'Samye Monastery', is the oldest monastery in Tibet and one of the most important historic landmarks in Yarlung's Valley of Kings. A circular wall that contains 108 chortens surrounds the large monastery complex. The Samye Monastery was designed strictly according to the Buddhist principles of the universe and India's Temple of Odantapuri served as its model. The main temple in the centre of the monastery symbolizes the mystical Mount Meru that is surrounded by four temples, each located in one of the four directions of the compass. The introduction of Buddhist monastery culture and the decline in the Bon system of faith with its demonic beliefs, gave Tibetan society a new structure. Despite its great age and dramatic history, Samye Monastery is still one of the most beautiful and unique religious sanctuaries in Tibet.

Kamalashila and the Great Debate at Samye
by Janet Baird through Professor Rev. Dr. James Kenneth Powell II, opensourcebuddhism.org This fine piece offers a snapshot of the great scholar and debater, shaper of Tibetan religion and culture, the Indian philosopher Kamalashila. We hear of his life in the first person, from his perspective. We hear of his accomplishments in Buddhist philosophy and his defeat of the "dread" Hashang Mohoyen (Mahayana) of the Chinese Ch'an tradition. In this India versus China competition, India wins Tibet...at least in the beginning.
