How Open Source Projects Survive Poisonous People (And You Can Too)
Google Tech Talks January 25, 2007 ABSTRACT Every open source project runs into people who are selfish, uncooperative, and disrespectful. These people can silently poison the atmosphere of a happy developer community. Come learn how to identify these people and peacefully de-fuse them before they derail your project. Told through a series of (often amusing) real-life anecdotes and experiences. Google engEDU Speaker: Ben Collins-Sussman Speaker: Brian Fitzpatrick

Glyn Moody - Before and After ACTA
Speaker: Glyn Moody (writer, blogger and speaker) On July 4, the European Parliament voted by a huge majority to reject the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) in one of the most bitterly-fought political battles in recent years. Why did an apparently obscure trade agreement about counterfeits turn into a fight for the soul of the Internet -- and a key moment for the future of European democracy? This talk will examine the origins of ACTA, and how it forms part of a larger attack on the Internet and on online freedom. It will also consider what ACTA's defeat means for the Internet, digital activism and European politics." Glyn Moody is a writer, blogger and speaker. His journalism has appeared in national newspapers, magazines and online. He writes regularly about digital rights, copyright and patents for Techdirt, while his main blog about open source, open content and open culture is at opendotdotdot.blogspot.com. After gaining an MA and PhD in mathematics from Cambridge University, Moody entered business journalism before specialising in the field of computers in 1983. He started writing, lecturing and consulting about business use of the Internet in early 1994, and about open source in 1995. In 1997 he wrote the first mainstream feature about GNU and free software, which appeared in Wired magazine. His book, "Rebel Code: Linux and the Open Source Revolution" -- the only detailed history of free software written so far -- was published in 2001. "Digital Code of <b>...</b>

My Open Source Cure
I have a brain cancer. I converted my digital medical records into open, accessible formats, turning them into a very personal form of Open Data. This data is available at www.artisopensource.net Artists, scientists, doctors, designers, hackers are all invited to send me their cure. In different cultures the word CURE means different things, referring to the body, the soul or to society. Send me your cure at info@artisopensource.net and it will be published on the website, so that anyone (maybe someone with my same disease) will be able to benefit from it.

Go Open Source or Go Home
www.twitter.com You don't have to be a geek to want to save your money and download programs for free. Here are 5 of my quick picks for open source software. My site - www.nixiepixel.com You may be wondering; What is Open Source? Open source generally refers to software that is released with open source code and no restrictions on downloading, modifying or advertising the work. An open source program usually starts when developers publish their code where other developers can learn about it, download it, and play with it. Where do you come in? You can reap all the benefits of course by using the application for no cost to you. Here is where you can download the programs mentioned in the video (in order) Firefox: www.mozilla.com OpenOffice: www.openoffice.org GIMP: www.gimp.org Pidgin: www.pidgin.im Video Editing Software: KDenLive: www.kdenlive.org (for Linux) Avidemux: fixounet.free.fr (for Windows) Thanks and hope you enjoyed! Experience Mobile Mobile
Lost Boys (an Interactive Agency) invited me to do something for their agency Christmas card.
We took this as an opportunity to reinterpret the Christmas tree and its role as the traditional focal point for a communal space. 'Mobile Mobile' is a six metre circumference interactive sculpture, and signature piece for the entrance of the Lost Boys London Brick Lane studio.
To cut a long story short, after a company-wide upgrade the agency had a lot of old mobiles gathering dust. We took these, built and hoisted a gigantic interactive chandelier/mobile that plays Christmas jingles in their reception.
To add a little xmas spice to the mix, anyone could go online, compose and play their own jingle (and enjoy annoying the hell out of people waiting around in the reception). This was achieved by playing the thing live, using your computer keyboard from a web browser.

The making of Mobile Mobile: http://www.vimeo.com/8118881
Details on how we made it and some behind the scenes content are available on my blog: http://www.theophane.co.uk/mobile-mobile
Mobile Mobile has been made as a semi-permanent hanging (exhibition) space. In January the mobiles will be replaced with another hanging media, then updated month in, month out.
Mobile Mobile is just one in a line of many great lo-fi art/build concepts; from the Design Museum's Aquarium, Digital By Design, Troika and The Cloud, the Printer Bleeping Thingy (I can't remember who did it), all the great work by W+K, and of course, AKQA's wonderful microwaves from last Christmas.
Looking forward to many more to come.

BLADE RUNNER revisited >3.6 gigapixels
A Tribute to BLADE RUNNER
An experimental film in homage to Ridley Scott's legendary futuristic film “Blade Runner” (1982).
Created by extracting 167,819 frames from 'Blade Runner's final cut version, then assembling all these images to obtain one gigantic image of colossal dimensions : a square of approximately 60,000 pixels on one side alone, 3.5 gigapixels. A virtual camera was then placed above this big picture which creates an illusion, because contrary to appearances, there is only one image. It is in fact the relative movement of the virtual camera flying over this massive image that creates the animated film, a kind of "zootrope effect", like a film in front of a projector.
The whole concept echoes one of the signature scenes from the film where "Deckard" (Harrison Ford) analyzes a photograph via voice recognition software.

Revolution OS
The film begins with glimpses of Raymond, a Linux IPO, Torvalds, the idea of Open Source, Perens, Stallman, then sets the historical stage in the early days of hackers and computer hobbyists when code was shared freely. It discusses how change came in 1978 as Bill Gates, in his Open Letter to Hobbyists, pointedly prodded hobbyists to pay up. Stallman relates his struggles with proprietary software vendors at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab, leading to his departure to focus on the development of free software, and the GNU project. Torvalds describes the development of the Linux kernel, the GNU/Linux naming controversy, Linux's further evolution, and its commercialization. Raymond and Stallman clarify the philosophy of free software versus communism and capitalism, as well as the development stages of Linux. Michael Tiemann discusses meeting Stallman in 1987, getting an early version of Stallman's GCC, and founding Cygnus Solutions. Larry Augustin describes combining GNU software with a normal PC to create a Unix-like workstation at one third the price and twice the power of a Sun workstation. He relates his early dealings with venture capitalists, the eventual capitalization and commodification of Linux for his own company, VA Linux, and its IPO. Brian Behlendorf, one of the original developers of the Apache HTTP Server, explains that he started to exchange patches for the NCSA web server daemon with other developers, which led to the release of "a patchy" webserver <b>...</b>

Yochai Benkler: Open-source economics
www.ted.com Law professor Yochai Benkler explains how collaborative projects like Wikipedia and Linux represent the next stage of human organization. By disrupting traditional economic production, copyright law and established competition, they're paving the way for a new set of economic laws, where empowered individuals are put on a level playing field with industry giants.
