The human voice / Ingrid Bergman
Ingrid Bergman gives a virtuoso solo performance in this Jean Cocteau one-act. The plot of this hour-long piece is a simple one: a woman, devastated after her lover leaves her for someone else, speaks to him on the phone one last time. The piece is beautifully, perfectly written and performed--all of the little lies and desperate hopes of heartbreak are captured. Bergman's performance is as brave as it is complex--she is willing to let her character crumble into an embarrassing weakness that few actresses would risk. Anyone who has ever nursed false hopes of salvaging a relationship will find this piece all too well done. See it, but not right after a breakup.

The beauty of the human voice made visible with cymatic imaging. Here, a range of vowel sounds reveal their extraordinary geometric beauty with the CymaScope. www.cymascope.com Songs, chants and thoughts expressed in speech are unique to humankind and differentiate us from the rest of the animal kingdom. In this example the sheer visual beauty of vowel sounds are made visible on the CymaScope. This is a cymatic experiment showing that when we speak or sing we bathe all those around us in beautiful energy.

Fantastic Voyage - a journey into the human voice
About 40 years ago, there was a neat movie called Fantastic Voyage. In it, a group of scientists shrunk themselves (and their submarine) into teensy proportions and traveled through a human's body to save his life. Well, we thought that idea was just too cool to ignore. So, we invite you to take your own incredible journey inside the body's vocal system. The investigators at the National Center for Voice and Speech conduct experiments to learn more about how people talk and sing. for more information about the human voice, visit us at: www.ncvs.org. Thanks to: Dr. Mona Abaza for performing the procedure; Kate Emerich, CCC-SLP, as narrator; & Julie Ostrem, MBA, for the vision and support, TheNational Center for Voice and Speech is a multi-site research and teaching organization dedicated to studying the characteristics, limitations and enhancements of human voice and speech. The executive offices are the University of Utah. www.ncvs.org or follow us at www.facebook.com .

Ingo R. Titze on BBC Radio: Discovery
BBC Radio -- The Human Voice BBC -- Discovery. Featuring Dr. Ingo Titze of the National Center for Voice and Speech. BBC Radio speaks of the human voice and how it works. They compared the human voice to a duck call, due to the vibration of a tube. Humans use the vibration and shape the articulators to create speech. The larynx is why we can speak. As humans we have a descended larynx. They address infant directed speech and how the infant directed speech is actually beneficial for children. Lastly, the address mechanical larynx -- these are due to laryngeal cancer. Due to our imperfections, we aren't able to produce a mechanical larynx that sounds human. Also interviewed in the presentation was Tecumseh Fitch who worked with NCVS scientist to study tiger vocalization. The audio is freely available as a podcast from BBC World Service. The audio was put to visuals by Melissa Bishop to help convey information. For more information about voice research and voice care, visit us at www.ncvs.org follow us at Facebook www.facebook.com

Eliezer S. Yudkowsky* wrote about an experiment which had to do with Artificial Inteligence. In a near future, man will have given birth to machines that are able to rewrite their codes, to improve themselves, and, why not, to dispense with them. This idea sounded a little bit distant to some critic voices, so an experiment was to be done: keep the AI sealed in a box from which it could not get out except by one mean: convincing a human guardian to let it out.
What if, as Yudkowsky states, ‘Humans are not secure’? Could we chess match our best creation to grant our own survival? Would man be humble enough to accept he was superseded, to look for primitive ways to find himself back, to cure himself from a disease that’s on his own genes? How to capture a force we voluntarily set free? What if mankind worst enemy were humans?
In a near future, we will cease to be the dominant race.
In a near future, we will learn to fear what is to come.

Jam Session 2.0
We put together a virtual "jam session" with musicians from all over the world! Music was inspired by Galt MacDermot's amazing "Coffee Cold". Handsome Boy Modeling School (Prince Paul and Dan the Automator ) flipped that song with J-Live and Roisin Murphy from Moloko and called it "The Truth".
It's AMAZING what you can do nowadays!
Lyrics
Dumbfoundead
A kid at the pawn shop just bought his first drum machine,
From the slums, but them buttons will take him to another kingdom
A woman humming in a kitchen in brazil, while 50 tenants listen by
sticking their heads outside the window sill, this shit is real, hear
the sounds across the land, no name brands, woman and man jam on pots
and pans, a musician with lost dreams, sitting on concrete, playing
his heart out on missing guitar strings, street performers for a
quarter put on the show of there life, an emcee gets put on the spot
rocks it and tears up the mic, the human instrument, reaching
continents in long distances, no need for sophisticated systems for us
to listen in, countries at war, expressing hate through there
aggression. while two musicians on each side are having a jam session,
whether both em know it or not, they are collaborating. You never know
which way your music is navigating,
Esna
Sing your heart out let your soul be heard
Move to the rhythm to the groove of the drum beats
Chill to the lines disappear to the moment
Fly away persuade all the madness
Just bounce just sway just listen
Herbal T
La música es un sonido supersónico
y es por eso que no creo lo que leo en el periódico
presenta un mundo dividido y tóxico
pero ahora por los cables fiberópticos
yo me comunico, así el mundo se pone chico
si no me entiendes yo te lo explico
whether you in the Bronx and you like to spit bars and rock clubs
or Mumbai playin sitars and tablas
the music is a way we escape, heal and grow
and you aint gotta speak the language if you wanna feel the flow
olha só rapaz, a gente vai a gente vem
mas o ritmo é coisa todo mundo sempre tem
tudo bem, faço música com colaboradores globais
utilizando piano voces tambores e mais
es un laso que nos une hasta el infinito
the rhythms in us it travels wherever we go
Esna
Just let the music take you let your mind take you
Way to find a way to need a way to a brighter day
Don't let it stop in you don't let it die in you
Breath just breath
Just fly away persuade all the madness
Just bounce just sway just listen
Dumbfoundead
Across the seas I hear piano keys playin, translating languages
through the rhythms in beats bangin, a universal exchange, of personal
pains and joys, it started with a verse, each person just came and
joined in, some are complete strangers, some only teenagers, all of us
creators, , we are the dreammakers, internationally transmittin
through bandwidth, passin this bands passion so the masses can jam
with us, all are invited to play, none are required to pay, let the
virus spread, inspire heads, go pirate away, this is that free music,
for people who need music, just listen and breathe to it, I hope that
you feel movement, different souls around globe, connected through
sound makin, they set the foundation now we take it to groundbreakin,
everybody played there part and now we have one song, and this is how
an unheard voice becomes strong
Esna
Sing your heart out let your soul be heard
Move to the rhythm to the groove of the drum beats
Chill to the lines disappear to the moment
Fly away persuade all the madness
Just bounce just sway just listen

The first known recording of a human voice, from April 9th, 1860. (Phonautograph Etching)
On 9th March 2008, this ethereal 10 second clip of a man (or woman) singing the French folk song "Au Clair de la Lune", was played for the first time in 150 years. It is currently thought to be the oldest known recorded human voice, predating Thomas Edison's first phonograph recording of 1877. The "phonautograph", created by etching soot-covered paper by Parisian inventor Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville, was played by US scientists using a "virtual stylus" to read the lines. The recording was initially believed to be the voice of a woman or adolescent, but further research in 2009 suggested the playback speed had been too high and that it was actually the voice of Scott himself. This would make sense since it would have been scott operating the machine, which is easier to time if you yourself are also producing the sound. (Incidentally, the "phonautograph" was designed only to record sounds, not to play them back. Thomas Edison was still the first to reproduce recorded sound.)
