Mary Pickford's Oscar Winning Performance in Coquette (1929) Clip 1
Silent film star Mary Pickford was unparalleled in her popularity for 20 years. When sound film (talkies) arrived she jumped right in, making her first talkie "Coquette" in early 1929. She won the Academy Award that year for best actress, with many claiming she didn't deserve it...that it was more a 'lifetime achievement award' than anything. While Pickford quite surely yielded her influence to win the award that doesn't mean her performance was unworthy. Coquette is a stunning early talkie film, using camera movements and natural acting that most filmmakers would not achieve for many years. You must remember that during this time the technology was so sensitive that jewelery or walking could upset the mics. With this in mind Mary's performance and knowledge as a producer is all the more impressive. These scenes are a bit spoileriffic, but considering Coquette has been unseen for many years it is my honor to upload some of her best scenes. In this scene Norma (Mary Pickford) finds out her father has shot her lover, and rushes to be by his side. For more of her wonderful talkie acting and Coquette clips see the rest of my vids. Mary Pickford "America's Sweetheart"
Mary Pickford was a Canadian-born motion picture actress, co-founder of the film studio United Artists and one of the original 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Known as "America's Sweetheart," "Little Mary" and "The girl with the curls," she was one of the Canadian pioneers in early Hollywood and a significant figure in the development of film acting. Because her international fame was triggered by moving images, she is a watershed figure in the history of modern celebrity. And as one of silent film's most important performers and producers, her contract demands were central to shaping the Hollywood industry. In consideration of her contributions to American cinema, the American Film Institute named Pickford 24th among the greatest female stars of all time. She died of cerebral hemorrhage on May 29, 1979, and was buried in the Garden of Memory of the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.

Mary Pickford 1909
Short excerpt of Mary in an early support role "The Light that Came" 1909 staring Ruth Hart. Mary left Biograph and ventured to IMP and Thomas Ince for a short time where some bad movies were made and a less than impressed Pickford returned to DW Griffiths and Biograph not long after. This a few excerpts from the IMP film "A Boy's Dream". Notable for Mary wearing a sailors uniform showing her fine figure; Mary's long curls keep getting in the way in one scene and Mary gets married - to what looks like a very young boy. The whole film taking place in the boys dream.

"Outer Space", starring Mary Pickford
A lovely screening at USC last night. Such articulate questions! The thoroughbred of questions. While waiting for the movie to finish I made a short movie in the lobby. Above is the poster for the movie, as you can see it stars Mary Pickford (I finally work with a movie star!)
Not my most refined work, but possibly the quickest.

Mary Pickford in "Friends"
Friends is a 1912 film written and directed by D. W. Griffith and starring Mary Pickford, Henry B. Walthall, Lionel Barrymore, and Harry Carey.[1] Walthall and Barrymore portray two old friends who each wind up involved with a beautiful girl (Pickford) who lives above a mining camp saloon
The film, by the Biograph Company, was shot in Fort Lee, New Jersey when many early film studios in America's first motion picture industry were based there at the beginning of the 20th century.[2][3][4] A print of Friends was run at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in July 2007 as part of a Biograph retrospective.

Madame Butterfly 1915 Mary Pickford Part I lost silent film
Mary Pickford played Cho-Cho in the earlier production and irked director Sydney Olcott by refusing to act oriental. Olcott was so upset that he walked off the set, but Pickford was Americas Sweetheart and nobody told her what to do; she simply took over directing duties until Olcott returned. The silent Madame Butterfly is a rare and fascinating look at Japan through western eyes during the early years of Hollywood. Look for actors with exceedingly large noses in key Japanese roles.

Silents Talk: Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford in Taming of the Shrew 1929
A clip from 1929's "Taming of the Shrew", starring superstar silent film couple Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. This was Mary's second talkie after Coquette, and Doug's first. The film opened shortly before the stock market crashed, and subsequently did not do as well as hoped (though it wasn't a total flop). Mary and Doug would go on to make a handful of talkies separately, both retiring by 1934. Their marriage began to crumble with the making of this film, and they divorced in 1933. Mary Pickford Inspired Hairstyle (1920's)
This hairstyle was inspired by one of the more prominent long-haired ladies from the 1920's, Mary Pickford. I've tried a variety of methods to get her curls but I've found a curling iron does the best job (and yes they did have curling irons in the 20's!).
