I remember seeing Amelia Santiago’s felted wool dog sculptures a while back somewhere on these here interwebs — I can’t remember where it was, but then I often can’t remember whether I’ve fed the dogs or not. Anyway, I was stoked when she contacted me and jogged my memory, ’cause her work is seriously amazing, y’all.

Amelia creates these tiny little canines from wool fibers with a needle. A NEEDLE. Do you know what I can do with a needle? Pretty much NOTHING. I can Frankenstein the pups’ toys back together, and that’s really it. (What I need to know is if Amelia can make sculptures out of dog hair. I’ve got enough here to fabricate a veritable tiny-dog army.)

But I’ve digressed. Amelia uses photographs sent to her by clients to create custom sculptures of their dogs. (You can check out the client gallery on her site to see the amazing likenesses.) She’s sculpted dozens of breeds and a totally squeal-worthy passel of mutts, too.

I AM IN AWE, y’all.

Amelia Santiago lives and works in Portland, Oregon. Go visit her website and be amazed.

I think I’ve mentioned before my intense desire to be a professional skateboarder. Alas, however, I have zero tolerance for pain, decidedly inadequate health insurance, and haven’t been on a skateboard in approximately 21 years.

I love Bethany Ng’s spring 2010 K-9 Series deck designs for Habitat Skateboards. Beth is a freelance graphic designer, illustrator, and dog lover in Portland, OR.

Anyone remember those microwave cakes from the ’80s where you’d stir some water into the bag of cake mix, pop it in the microwave bundt pan, and “bake” it in the microwave in just a couple minutes? I LOVED THOSE THINGS… not so much for the taste, but because they were the perfect entertainment for a kid who wanted to pretend like she was cooking but whose mother perhaps didn’t trust her with a power mixer and hot oven.

PupCakes 2 Go are little microwave cakes for dogs and were voted Best New Product for 2010 at the Global Pet Expo. It’s easy to see why — they’re super easy and fun to make, inexpensive, and made from organic, wholesome ingredients (wheat, soy, and preservative-free at that). Melinda from Lucky Paws, the makers of PupCakes, sent me a couple boxes to try, and I relived a little ’80s fun whipping up a batch for Mingus and Dottie yesterday afternoon.

With PupCakes, all it takes to become a canine pastry chef extraordinaire is a little water, a little peanut butter, and a microwave. The powdered mix smells really good, just like cinnamon, and the PupCakes really do look and smell like real cakes when they come out of the microwave after a magical two and a half minutes. I was even tempted to try a tiny piece, and, well, they kind of tasted like those microwave cakes from the ’80s. But hey, they’re not made for humans, they’re for dogs. And the dogs? LOVED them.

And that preshy little purple tray? It’s reusable with PupCakes’ refill mixes. LOVE IT.

To find out how to get your paws on some PupCakes 2 Go, check out Lucky Paws’ website.

A few months ago I told you about a new regular feature here on phetched called Phetched’s Best Phriends. It’s taken me a while to get things up and running because, well, I’ve been traveling and working like a dog and procrastinating a little, but we’re finally ready to roll!

Best Phriends will be a way for me and for phetched readers to get to know your pups. Each week or two we’ll feature a phetched fan’s beloved pup (or pups!), complete with photos, a bio, and plenty of cash and prizes! (OK, I’m totally lying about the cash and prizes. I don’t have the resources for that kind of thing, so nominal fame and heartfelt accolades will have to do.) We’ll post profiles of Best Phriends participants, and the currently featured pup’s photo will be featured in the right sidebar for everyone to admire. Awesome!

We want all our Best Phriends to stand up and be counted! To submit your pup, all you have to do is send an email with your name and the name(s) of your pup(s) to bestphriends [at] gmail [dot] com, and we’ll be in touch. We can’t wait to meet all of you!

I saw this around the interwebs in a few places yesterday, including People Pets, and I thought we could probably all use a laugh, it being Friday and all.

Tell me, what in the world did we do with ourselves before the internet existed and we could pass ridiculous videos around the globe? Well, we read a lot more books and were all a good deal more productive, but that’s another topic for another day.

Today, however, I present: a pug singing the “Batman” theme.

Maybe it’s just a function of the kind of week I’ve had, but I FREAKING LOVE THESE TOYS OF MASS DESTRUCTION.

(They’re da bomb! They’re DY-NO-MIIIIITE!) (I’ll stop now.) (Besides, I just totally dated myself with that “Good Times” reference.)

You can fetch Tuffy grenade, bomb, and dynamite toss toys at Nip and Bones.

Philadelphia photographer and illustrator Andrew Pinkham is  a really nice guy, so I wish his photographs didn’t challenge me so much. See, I’m pretty much a purist when it comes to photography — I don’t typically go for staging or a bunch of postproduction shenanigans. Pinkham’s work, as you can see, pretty much blows all my self-subscribed “rules” out of the water — and yet I still like it.

Inspired by 18th-century portraiture and painters like George Stubbs and John James Audubon, Pinkham employs poetic landscapes, occasional props, and postproduction layering to create psedo-historical portraits of pets and people.

Pinkham states, “One of the things that I purely enjoy about making this work is that it is historical in its look, feel and approach. The client determines how they want their animal portrayed, and the rest is, well, history, and a very personal history at that.”

No matter how somber, regal, comedic, or even a little bit absurd the final product may be, each piece starts with an honest, soulful capturing of his subject’s personality, telling a distinct story that reflects the powerful roles our pets play in our lives. Pretty sure that’s what I like about it — my “rules” be damned.

You can check out more of Pinkham’s work on his website and his blog.

Why do I love things like this?

I’m not sure. But it definitely comes from the same part of my psyche that’s fascinated by those little Japanese erasers that look like little tiny milkshakes, cheeseburgers, telephones, and x-ray machines. I used to hide it in college when I was listening to a lot of Bob Dylan and reading Adrienne Rich and Carson McCullers, but dangit, I’m not denying it anymore — I love colorful, cute stuff, and I need it in my life.

Tokidoki’s Cactus Pups each stand one inch tall and are accompanied by a teeny tiny accessory. Sold in a blind box from Pop Deluxe.

(And thanks to reader Lynn for turning me on to Pop Deluxe, which is full of all things colorful and cute.)

I can’t decide if I like Cozy Puffs for their bright colors, their clean yet fun design, or the fact that I think I’d really like curling up on one myself.

I guess it’s all of the above.

Cozy Puffs are made in the USA from Polartec and hypoallergenic polyfil and are machine washable. You can customize one to fit your decor or your mood at Cozy Puffs’ web site.

Also cool? Cozy Puffs donates a portion of every sale to Operation Baghdad Pups.
