"But I could recognize where my fears were coming from and get support to manage those thoughts rather than let them manage me." HelpLine: 1.800.944.4773 Text in English: 800-944-4773 Text en Español: 971-203-7773 postpartum.net
Talk about how you feel and ask for help. Finding a clinician who specializes in perinatal issues is important because mental health is not one-size-fits-all. That’s why I’m taking calls on the Postpartum Support International helpline. If medication is part of the answer for you, for example, you’ll need a clinician who monitors your progress much more frequently than is typical with other disorders.

The best testament I can give to reaching out for help is this: I chose to have a second child. I knew that having perinatal issues with one child put me at risk of experiencing similar challenges with subsequent pregnancies. But now I had a team to help me. I did have intrusive thoughts during my second pregnancy and after Walker’s birth in 2022. But I could recognize where my fears were coming from and get support to manage those thoughts rather than let them manage me.

This year, remember you are not alone. Happy Mother’s Day.
