Our Chief Medical Officer, Vijay Yanamadala MD, MBA, FAANS, on the importance of whole-person healthcare and the power of Sword's Comprehensive Care Team

As a spine surgeon, I have seen firsthand the benefits of multidisciplinary whole-person care. Studies show that when surgeons work as part of an integrated team, patients are 50% less likely to undergo surgery. Patients receive the comprehensive care they need when the entire spectrum of care is coordinated. That's the philosophy we we first developed Sword Health's Comprehensive Care Team, which includes licensed specialists in psychology, sleep, and nutrition, in addition to our doctors of physical therapy. Our team allows us to provide thoughtfully integrated care, treating not just pain but also the co-morbidities that frequently accompany it. We have always believed in a team approach to healthcare, and our Comprehensive Care Team reflects that philosophy. Our patients receive the best possible care that addresses their individual needs. Virtual care is changing the game when it comes to healthcare disparities in America. Rural Americans, people of color, and those in underserved urban communities like the Bronx, NY (where I worked for a number of years) face significant barriers in accessing traditional healthcare. But with virtual care, we can overcome these obstacles and achieve better health equity. A recent Forbes article highlights the impact of virtual care in achieving equitable healthcare access. While many have suggested virtual care can worsen disparities, at Sword Health, we have seen firsthand the outsized benefits that virtual care can bring to traditionally disadvantaged Americans when implemented in the right way. The pandemic accelerated the adoption of virtual care, and we are now seeing the positive effects of carrying it out in the right way. As we implement virtual solutions, when we deeply understand traditional barriers to care and overcome these, we will realize powerful drivers for health equity. That’s a wrap for Sword at The Conference Board's 24th Annual Employee Health Care Conference in San Diego. And what an incredibly inspiring week it was. In case you missed it: On stage, Kyle Spackman and Caitlin O’Brien, PT, DPT had a powerful conversation with Torrey Quintana — where Kyle shared his own story about recovering from pain, and talked about how Sword is solving the pain epidemic with a holistic platform that engages high-risk people early, meets members where they are, and delivers personalized care at every step. We also shared how our platform of solutions is growing to truly predict, prevent and treat pain through newer offerings: Predict, Move, Bloom, On-Call, Academy, and Atlas. We loved meeting benefits and health leaders from all types of industries at our booth! Our team was on hand to answer questions and share demos — highlighting how we’re solving pain, cutting costs and improving health outcomes in partnership with employers and health plans. Bonus: a lot of folks left with a bottle or two of our fresh & healthy juice! 🧃🥳
