Depending on where you travel outside of the U.S., you'll need to determine whether you need a passport book or a passport card.
A passport book is required for all international air travel.
To enter the United States at land border crossings or seaports of entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda, you can use a passport book or passport card.
A passport card is more convenient and less expensive than a passport book, but cannot be used for international air travel.
The application process is the same for the passport notebook or the card, even if you want to obtain both at the same time. It is required to go in person to submit your application.
If you need to obtain a passport in three weeks or less, you will need an expedited process. To find out where you should go and what additional charges you will pay, follow the steps to obtain an expedited passport.
If you are traveling in more than three weeks, you can follow the regular application process and submit your application in person at a passport acceptance center.
