I am reading/listening to/watching that I think have a connection to disability culture and community. I hope you'll join me on this complete descent into crip media chaos. Feel free to email or DM if you have any questions (+ hopefully the alt text behaved) See you Wednesday.

The first piece will be about music that makes disabled musicians feel a sense of crip euphoria, a sense that they are more at home in their body. The newsletter will also include an ableist headline of the week for us to critique/make fun of and a selection of the things 6/?

I know it's against best practice to ask for money right off the top, but I think disabled people often have free labour demanded of us. I've included a link on the page where you can send $ that will support my work and help it grow. I will not be asking for free labour 5/?

This project is also coming to life because, eventually, I want this to be a platform for other disabled writers, editors, etc. to create disability-led media. There are many of us, both out as disabled and not, who deserve more space to explore these topics. 4/?

This project is happening for a few reasons. 1) I've been very lucky to be able to report outside of disability on occasion. 2) Many disabled journalists are only trusted with opinion pieces, many of which also have to be about trauma. In short, fuck that. And 3) I've always 2/?

Sometimes my friend gets to write really cool shit and then some days I feel like her job must be the writing equivalent of alternating between laughing and crying. At least I know that no one in my life can be as cringe as Elon.

I see my ~personal news~ is out there! Happy to confirm that I'll be heading up @BuzzFeedNews' tech desk, starting next week. I'm psyched to be joining the organization I've read so much about on Twitter the last couple of days!

Since I most likely have COVID (have symptoms but not testing positive just yet) I’m looking for book suggestions. Bonus points if they are non-fiction

One of the good things about being in an international group chat of freelancers is that there's always someone who just got off work and is ready to start chaos.

Another reason why I think most travel journalism is just shitty missionary work in a trench coat.

Start with the things you know about. For me that is most often: health, sport, and media. Write down 25-50 ideas, no matter how shit. Congrats, you have a list, now add some whenever they occur to you. Coming up with ideas is a skill you have to practice.

Teaching my features writing class that it’s not their pretty sentences that will advance their careers, but their ability to I.D. and describe excellent story ideas. (Yes prose is important, but ideas/pitching is an underrated skill )What are your pro tips for generating ideas?

I really want to write a piece about disabled car collectors and drivers for , if only because I think it would be hilarious to write a super car-focused feature as someone who doesn't drive. I mean, also for all the normal journalistic reasons.

Sad that Input is shutting down. Really don't have anything to add to the discourse other than that et. all were a joy to work with and I hope they land on their feet as quickly as possible.

... in a lot of cases, the cursory research to see who has written before. I've seen a couple of disabled journos today claim that they are the first to cover something and, like, I promise that's not true. Your ego is showing if you believe that.

Prepare for me to come across as a bitter media cripple, but I just realized (for myself, this is not a new thought) that scoop culture ruins a shit ton of reporting because it makes marginalized think they have to be first in order to be allowed to speak. It prevents...

It's breathtaking, the thought processes some white disabled people (including journos) on this platform will bind themselves to in order to convince themselves that they lack privilege or that they can downplay it. If you're not willing to sit with discomfort, please reflect
